Host (0:08): Welcome to Bourbon Brass and Beyond. Check us out at www.bourbonbrassandbeyond.com. Tonight, we fresh cracked Friday with Benchmark and e h Taylor single barrels. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight.
Unknown Speaker (0:35): Good evening. Hi. Welcome back. Bourbon Brass and Beyond. We are doing the low rye mash bill.
Unknown Speaker (0:42): Yeah. Single barrel style.
Unknown Speaker (0:43): Single barrel style. Fresh Crack Friday. Both of these are new, but Not new. Yeah. I've had that for year and a half.
Unknown Speaker (0:50): Yeah. Maybe. You know,
Unknown Speaker (0:52): open. I've never had benchmark.
Unknown Speaker (0:54): No. Uh-uh. I'm curious. See how this goes.
Unknown Speaker (0:56): Screw you top.
Speaker 2 (0:57): To your point, it's the same mash bill. Yeah. Is these age dated?
Unknown Speaker (1:05): No. But I was just looking it up. So apparently benchmark's gonna be somewhere around four years. I figured. And
Unknown Speaker (1:17): 90 proof? 95. Oh.
Unknown Speaker (1:20): For the same world. I can I can see? Smell. Smells sweet. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (1:24): It's got a sweet nose on it. Like the definite Taylor
Speaker 2 (1:30): Yeah. Hood hood. Yeah. Caramel vanilla, like all the all the regulars. But it's nice.
Speaker 2 (1:37): Yeah. A little bit of floral in there, I think, too.
Speaker 1 (1:39): And only one fourth of the the price.
Speaker 2 (1:42): Yeah. Well, yeah. Well, and it's available. Don't forget that part. Like Well,
Unknown Speaker (1:47): I don't know.
Speaker 2 (1:47): This one might not be as available, I guess, you're as a single barrel.
Unknown Speaker (1:51): Yeah. I've seen them. I have seen them before on the shelf.
Speaker 2 (1:54): Well, but Benchmark as a bottle was always more available than Taylor as a bottle. Even I feel like we're fairly spoiled in the state of Ohio. But Yeah. And I think I've heard what is it? Texas and Arizona gets it like crazy.
Speaker 1 (2:09): But I'll say the the nose is better than the palate. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (2:12): It's four years. I mean, I think that's gonna I get a lot of corn. Definitely too. Yeah. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (2:18): Fresh crack, but man.
Unknown Speaker (2:20): Yeah. I mean Yeah. It's like the difference between a good roofer and a bad roofer.
Unknown Speaker (2:23): You don't want the bad roofer.
Unknown Speaker (2:25): You don't want the bad roofer.
Unknown Speaker (2:26): Don't find the bad roofer.
Unknown Speaker (2:27): I'm not gonna say any names, but
Unknown Speaker (2:29): Don't find bad roofers. Don't find bad roofers. Never mind. Sign down? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (2:33): Yeah. Yeah. I did.
Unknown Speaker (2:34): So the
Speaker 1 (2:37): story is we had to replace a rubber roof that was under a floating deck.
Unknown Speaker (2:42): Was it truly floating? I guess I'm pretty impressed by that.
Speaker 1 (2:44): Yeah. It was floating. Well, and then it was literally floating when it was leaking water down into the Yeah. And, the previous owner said that, oh, I'll fix that. And he just covered it up with mud from underneath.
Unknown Speaker (2:58): And then he did have somebody come look at it and say, yeah.
Unknown Speaker (3:01): It needs replaced.
Unknown Speaker (3:02): Well, they they quote unquote fixed
Unknown Speaker (3:04): it for the sale, but Okay.
Speaker 1 (3:05): It's been nothing but a nightmare of a sense. So we were supposed to get it replaced where the decks got removed and they were just gonna put a black rubber roof on it. Then we're gonna put like a walking, a walkway, a path that with thicker rubber.
Unknown Speaker (3:19): Oh, so you can service or do whatever else you needed up there.
Speaker 1 (3:21): Yeah. Well, but it's still a deck. It's still okay. Okay. Turns out what they installed was white roof.
Speaker 1 (3:29): They didn't replace all the boards underneath. What a mess. And there's piles of shingles and stuff around the house that I hit with a lawn mower because I didn't see it.
Unknown Speaker (3:38): Oh, jeez.
Unknown Speaker (3:38): Oh, yeah. You know, just
Unknown Speaker (3:40): The fun never ends? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (3:42): So we'll see.
Unknown Speaker (3:43): Well, stinks. Sorry.
Speaker 1 (3:44): No. That's, you know, learning experience.
Speaker 2 (3:46): Yeah. I think that that is the single hardest part about anything. I mean, you can't find somebody good to build a house. Good luck finding somebody good to do the repairs, to call you back, plumber, roofer, electrician. It's half the battle.
Speaker 2 (4:01): And once you find one, you keep them because it is what it is.
Unknown Speaker (4:04): Yeah. So Well, and that's why, you know, who we have working on the Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (4:09): The downstairs podcast bar area. I mean, he's fantastic.
Unknown Speaker (4:13): Yeah. But he's been doing it forever.
Unknown Speaker (4:17): This is just Going, like you said, he's got his preferences, which is nothing but good. That's the way Yeah.
Speaker 1 (4:21): Yeah. He loves doing the trim work,
Unknown Speaker (4:24): but we'll have him till the fall because then he's going to build a house. Oh, okay. You know?
Unknown Speaker (4:29): Yeah. You know? That's
Unknown Speaker (4:32): I tell you, the nose is pretty darn good on this even.
Speaker 1 (4:35): Yeah, it is. Yeah. I'm getting a little bit of like the grape Cola.
Unknown Speaker (4:40): They trick you on this one.
Speaker 1 (4:42): You know, with the graininess in the corn, I'm getting a little bit of that, that really nice grape flavor from the the H pillar barrel proof. Yep. And this is a cinder barrel. So it was, you never know. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (4:54): Yeah. And she's hot. Yeah. For 95. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (4:57): I think we can reuse the glass
Unknown Speaker (4:58): on this one. It's gonna be the same mash bill. It can't be that much. But, I mean, are we saying that was bad enough that you don't wanna taint this one?
Unknown Speaker (5:05): Right. It's not like it was that caster.
Unknown Speaker (5:07): Give her a good splash and keep eating. Hey,
Unknown Speaker (5:12): if somebody likes that, that's fine. Table Yeah. Table of shame to you. Not saying that somebody can't like that.
Unknown Speaker (5:23): Yeah. It's just not us. Not us. That's that was one of those ones where you're like, oh, it's so bad. I'm like, how bad is it?
Unknown Speaker (5:31): Really? I'm like, oh,
Speaker 2 (5:33): I didn't realize it was Band Aid bad. Dirty Band Aids. Thank you.
Unknown Speaker (5:43): So I still can't get over how much that whiskey wore cigar cask smelled like carnauba wax. I still can't get over that. Did he take that one? He took that back.
Unknown Speaker (5:53): Okay. He took that one. That's funny.
Unknown Speaker (5:57): But I think that's, like, one of my best calls of, like, something abstract or
Unknown Speaker (6:01): It was very, very accurate.
Unknown Speaker (6:03): Yeah. I I I don't know.
Unknown Speaker (6:04): I don't know how that Sneaks up on you.
Unknown Speaker (6:06): Yeah.
Speaker 2 (6:09): That's my project for tomorrow, by the way, is
Unknown Speaker (6:12): Wax in the car.
Speaker 2 (6:13): Yeah. Well, new car. So I've gotta go the goal is basically to it's got a it needs a a polish as well. So we're gonna polish and then a sealant. So Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (6:23): I think the nose is better on the benchmark, but it tricks you.
Unknown Speaker (6:26): One this one yeah. So I think that the Taylor just a hair No age dated here either. It's not near as ethanol y on the nose.
Unknown Speaker (6:34): Yeah. The labels are so nice on these. Oh, yeah. Like thick. Man, they do a good job.
Unknown Speaker (6:41): This might be my favorite brand, like bottle brand that they make. The Weller bottles are pretty, don't get me wrong. But I like the oldie style of these. Yeah. It starts to get hard to tell them apart after a while.
Speaker 2 (6:57): Like the reds between straight rye and small batch and the barrel char smell on this is crazy good. You know, just toasted yumminess.
Speaker 1 (7:07): A lot more character, a lot more flavor. I'm getting more fruit tones. But I will say that
Unknown Speaker (7:17): Not as hot.
Unknown Speaker (7:20): Yeah. But you still get that Low rack. I mean Yeah. It's a neck pour too. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (7:27): I think you're right that there it's much more complex smell palette. I mean, it's
Speaker 1 (7:32): Just seemed a little more subtle.
Unknown Speaker (7:34): This would the classic you get what you pay for? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (7:39): But is it worth the difference? That's the question.
Speaker 2 (7:47): Are we saying MSRP? Are we saying secondary? MSRP on this is 50, right? 59? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (7:55): I think that's I think that's what it is.
Unknown Speaker (7:59): Now I'm curious.
Unknown Speaker (8:00): Now you gotta look. OHLQ. Yep. Not available. Well, yeah.
Unknown Speaker (8:04): Don't even know if it'll come up. They're picky on things like this.
Speaker 1 (8:07): Yeah. Let's let's see here. Taylor Single barrel.
Unknown Speaker (8:13): It would help if I could spell.
Unknown Speaker (8:15): So D. H. Taylor single barrel is typically 60 to 80.
Unknown Speaker (8:18): So Yeah. It says $79.99. Okay.
Unknown Speaker (8:21): So, I mean Whereas that one's 20 to 25.
Unknown Speaker (8:24): I'd come back to this one before I'd ever
Speaker 3 (8:26): Right. Think about going back to that. And again, I
Speaker 2 (8:33): call it ADMSRP. It's probably 01/20 to one fifty secondary.
Speaker 1 (8:38): Yep. The date to ten years old. Yeah. It's it's it's in that that range.
Speaker 2 (8:43): And I'm gonna be a snob here for a second if you're gonna pour for friends. I know which one I'm picking literally 11 out of 10 times. So Right. I just
Speaker 1 (8:57): I'm getting a much better finish.
Unknown Speaker (8:59): Oh, yeah. It's not it's nowhere near as hot as that is.
Unknown Speaker (9:04): But I but I feel like the the the flavor stays in the finish.
Speaker 2 (9:07): Yeah. Yeah. And I don't Better. Think the ethanol is overwhelming or anything else. Again, they're both fresh.
Speaker 2 (9:13): So Yeah. I think they're good.
Speaker 1 (9:15): And you start to get that flavor. Like, I really like
Speaker 2 (9:18): Really, the flavor lasts too. I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (9:22): I think is it like the the barrel proof?
Speaker 3 (9:25): No. I really like I always thought
Unknown Speaker (9:28): that barrel proof was way hot too. So I don't.
Speaker 1 (9:32): This is the 01/2004 batch
Unknown Speaker (9:35): The from this last year. Yeah. The batch 14. It's the second batch. The first one was point two, wasn't it?
Unknown Speaker (9:41): Yeah. There's a fourteen and fourteen a or
Unknown Speaker (9:45): Yeah.
Speaker 1 (9:45): Yeah. Yeah. Of course, it doesn't say batch 14 anywhere on the bottle.
Unknown Speaker (9:49): Nope. You gotta know it by And what was the 114? 127.4.
Unknown Speaker (9:57): I'm stuck on the 4. Just a little.
Unknown Speaker (10:01): Splash me.
Unknown Speaker (10:02): Yeah. So this one, I get so much sweeter on the nose to me. Much a lot more caramel.
Unknown Speaker (10:09): Back to that.
Speaker 1 (10:12): I mean, definitely get a little more heat, but Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (10:15): Going back here, there's still some in this one. If you wanna go side by side.
Unknown Speaker (10:19): Which one is this? This is
Speaker 2 (10:20): That's the small or the single barrel. I I feel like this one almost is flat compared to that. So I'm getting a lot more of the fruit sweetness. This one is very barely, like marshmallow vanilla. I'll agree.
Speaker 2 (10:34): And
Speaker 1 (10:37): this one is the yeah, that's the single broom.
Speaker 2 (10:41): Listen, I know one's available. One's not more available than the other. I I've never been a fan of this one.
Speaker 1 (10:48): I don't know. See, I always thought that this barrel proof that the Colonel Taylor barrel proof that we just had,
Speaker 2 (10:54): that one has been my favorite tailor. You know, I've we've I've got a couple more of these. We might have to do a single barrel, just a run lined across them. I just I'm good. That thing drinks hot.
Speaker 2 (11:09): I think it's stag to me too. It's got that stag heat to it. Yeah. I think the nose is 10 times better on this thing. We did this once before.
Unknown Speaker (11:22): We did this one before. Right? Yes. I had two of these. I let one go because I was afterwards because I'm like, I
Unknown Speaker (11:28): don't like it. I don't know
Unknown Speaker (11:29): if I'd ever drink either of them,
Unknown Speaker (11:31): let alone both of them.
Unknown Speaker (11:34): Yeah. I might let the
Unknown Speaker (11:35): other one go. You you want back up? Yeah. Man. I'll take them back up.
Speaker 3 (11:40): I'm unimpressed.
Unknown Speaker (11:44): I don't know. Listen, you to your point, it's been your favorite.
Unknown Speaker (11:47): I I
Unknown Speaker (11:48): I I would gonna shit on that. So the other question is, man, the nose is keeps growing on me on this thing.
Unknown Speaker (11:58): How does that compare
Unknown Speaker (12:01): No. Here we go.
Unknown Speaker (12:02): To the Eagle Rare 12.
Unknown Speaker (12:03): Are we doing that too? I think we should try it.
Unknown Speaker (12:06): Because it's the same mash bill. It's the low rise mash bill.
Unknown Speaker (12:08): Man. Splash me. Yeah. Woah. You're good.
Speaker 2 (12:16): My son was helping me clean the car today.
Unknown Speaker (12:18): I love that kind of help.
Unknown Speaker (12:19): So he was well, it was foam cannon and pressure washer. Yeah. He was loving every second of it. He was like, daddy, can I paint the car? Like, yeah, buddy, go ahead.
Unknown Speaker (12:28): Have at it. So I
Unknown Speaker (12:29): get like orangey on this more. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (12:32): I'm getting a little more floral. Yeah. Citrus.
Unknown Speaker (12:37): What do you think? This one, I
Unknown Speaker (12:40): I was a big fan between this one and that Eagle Rare store pick. They were Yeah. They were both really, really good.
Unknown Speaker (12:46): So I'm
Speaker 1 (12:49): not getting as much of the cherry, but it's almost like I'm getting a little bit more of the darker, like cacao.
Unknown Speaker (12:54): I would agree with that. Say it drinks light too.
Unknown Speaker (13:01): Yeah. A lot of sweet.
Speaker 2 (13:02): No. I agree with this. Listen. I've always said that Eagle Rare 10 is the best deal in in bourbon at this point. Ten years.
Speaker 2 (13:09): Age dated ten year available $47 or whatever it is.
Speaker 1 (13:13): So it's allocated in Ohio. Yep. So the last this past Tuesday at Geno's
Unknown Speaker (13:19): It's sat.
Unknown Speaker (13:20): It sat. This guy ended up walking out with a case and a half of Eagle Rare. He's like, get my Christmas. Get my Christmas presents.
Unknown Speaker (13:26): It is perfect for that. I will say it's between that and the Taylor small batch. I think they are the perfect Christmas presents. Did you get back up for this one too? No?
Unknown Speaker (13:34): Not yet. I'm working on had another one. Yeah. I'm working on that. I've been working on a lot of things this week.
Unknown Speaker (13:39): Well, yeah. You've been busy. You've been busy.
Unknown Speaker (13:41): Keeping us with some things to showcase. I think the
Unknown Speaker (13:44): nose might be better on this than in in the Taylor. Different.
Speaker 1 (13:48): Yeah. I will say I like the Taylor better. I like the sweetness and the, and the, the dark fruit flavors of the Taylor a little better than the rare. I feel like the rare, you get a little more of the char, but it's a little more of the, Not even spice. It's it's it's more of like the chocolate cacao type flavors.
Speaker 1 (14:09): And I normally like that, but I just I really like Taylor.
Unknown Speaker (14:11): The nose on this Taylor is crazy good.
Unknown Speaker (14:13): Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:18): Super barely, like it's Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:22): So Yeah, man. I'm gonna have to open one up.
Unknown Speaker (14:25): We'll we'll might have to do a couple comparisons on this one. Well because single barrels are single barrels. Right?
Unknown Speaker (14:30): Like
Unknown Speaker (14:30): And I have I got a couple older ones too.
Unknown Speaker (14:33): I have the full benchmark lineup. So we can do the small batch. We can do the bonded.
Unknown Speaker (14:38): I was talking to Taylor, not the not the benchmark.
Unknown Speaker (14:40): Right.
Unknown Speaker (14:41): Good on this benchmark. We're we're gonna
Unknown Speaker (14:43): compare. Might as well.
Unknown Speaker (14:45): Are you gonna put it up against the well or run? I mean,
Unknown Speaker (14:47): let's do But it's a different mash bill.
Unknown Speaker (14:49): Yeah. We do have
Unknown Speaker (14:52): to do the well or
Unknown Speaker (14:53): Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (14:55): And when I get to Jack Daniel's one done, we'll
Speaker 2 (14:57): have to do that. Taylor's single barrel is pretty darn good, new baby. No, that's right. I don't even know who it there. That's one.
Speaker 2 (15:05): That's two. That's one. Okay. Good for you.
Unknown Speaker (15:10): You gotta do the bond of Lillard? Yeah. Haven't done that yet. Oh, when we do some weeded ones.
Unknown Speaker (15:20): Oh, yeah. I wanna do
Speaker 1 (15:21): this old elk. Picked up this old elk. And then Greg Metzey distiller. What's interesting though, is this is an MGP. I thought they were, they were bought
Unknown Speaker (15:34): in the
Unknown Speaker (15:34): last year and a half. So now they're, Midwest spirits. Okay. But this is prior to them being bought. So this is an MGP.
Unknown Speaker (15:45): They're just clearing out old stock.
Unknown Speaker (15:46): Yeah. Okay. So we'll have to do that one.
Unknown Speaker (15:49): Got some others.
Speaker 2 (15:50): Yeah. We got some other I mean, these are just cool old looking bottles. I like them both.
Speaker 1 (15:56): Yeah. I I don't know much about the Von and Lillard compared to the Saffold.
Unknown Speaker (16:00): And it's the exact same bottle. Right?
Speaker 1 (16:01): Yeah. Yeah. It is. But I don't know if they they go back in the the actual
Unknown Speaker (16:06): Yeah. Old old days.
Speaker 1 (16:08): Yeah. But it's all Russell's Wild Turkey.
Unknown Speaker (16:13): Tilichunga Barrel's a good one.
Speaker 1 (16:15): Yeah. I'm a fan. I like it. And you know what?
Unknown Speaker (16:20): I'll give you my bear proof. Decided. Sounds good. It's decided. Sounds good.
Unknown Speaker (16:29): But, I mean, even for the benchmark, I mean, it is what it is.
Unknown Speaker (16:32): Yeah. And I'll agree with this.
Unknown Speaker (16:33): You know, for some, it's not as picky. I think that the benchmark would be more than adequate.
Unknown Speaker (16:41): Yeah. No.
Unknown Speaker (16:41): I agree. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (16:42): $23 for a Good deal. Single barrel? Yeah. Very cool. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker (16:50): Well, thanks for coming
Unknown Speaker (16:51): Thank you. It's a good one.
