Paul Sutton and Green River #Bourbon; Ep. 77

Dan and Bob: Hi everybody. Welcome back, Bourbon Brass and Beyond. tonight we're gonna do a little bit of a throwback to Paul Sutton, a small distillery that is still producing bourbon. I was on a Florida trip, family trip. Yeah, and I stopped into a liquor store in Florida, and this would have been probably twenty Yeah. Twenty one. And the older gentleman that owned the liquor store said, Hey, have you ever tried Paul Sutton? I'm like, No. He's like, take it from me that this is one of the old schools that you'll want to try. I'm like, Okay. So I picked it up and I actually Yeah. You've always we we've talked about doing this like several, several many times. Yeah. Like we need to go back to this thing. So this bottle was from March of twenty-one. It was batch twenty. hundred proof. And I and I liked it. Now I have not revisited this in a long time. So and I actually have a new hunter proof as well. Okay. Well, probably twenty twenty four, twenty twenty five, but so I always wanted to revisit. This other bottle looks darker than this one. Yeah. Thank you. So the other one's 113.2 proof. Okay. And that is a limited release heritage collection. And this is their standard release? This is their standard release. They do it annually. it's just a small family distillery. Yeah. That's good news. It's bourbon. Like it's got that very bourbon oaky Look at the legs on that for hunter proof. Yeah. Yeah. Smells good. Easy drink. Got a little burn on my lips there. Yeah. That's been open for a while too. Yeah. But that's a that rye spice. Yeah. Yeah, I don't I get I get a lot of fruit on this. Like a a a tart fruit or a Almost like a sweet tart. Like a like a a candy, a sweet tart. And it's not finished. Yeah. Flavor holds well too. Yeah. I think they're down in This says distillery Danville, Kentucky. Hand drawn. Limited br limited blend. Yeah. I mean it's if this is a normal release it I mean I I didn't get as near as much bite on the second. I'll agree with that, yeah. Yeah. I didn't get that lip burn or anything? No. Yeah, it's got it it's very rye forward, but I get a lot of orange. I get a lot of yeah, you know fruit on it. I'm happy with that. Yeah. Give a little bit of the Kentucky hug? yeah, a little bit. I I I think that's what I was talking about. Like when it was when it hits your lips, it just it's had a little bit of burn, but man now. Yeah. Can taste a little more of the rye on that third sip. Yeah. I'm gonna save a little bit to come back. So this one, limited release, heritage collection, age seven years. Okay. So does this one have an age statement? I think it did. No, it does not have an age statement. Our limited release of our family's century-old mash recipe in honor of our seventh generation. All right. This is always the part I like you go and talk to Wally and all those guys and they've all been doing it for so long. I it's just funny, impressive, awesome. I love the history of it. So Right. And and they all like love the history of it. Well listen, I think they respect each other. I think that they know that their their businesses are their business, but it's also they exist because of each other as well. So Did I get you? Yeah. Holy shit. So I am really curious. I've not s I've not put my nose in this glass. All I did was go and you there was a drop on my finger. I went to lick it off. And I'm curious to see if it holds to what that is. It was very licorice. Really? Yeah. And I don't know if that's a this is what it's gonna be or I don't know. I've never had the limited release or the Is that what that is? There's something there. Yeah. I'm getting leather. I'm getting like I'm getting like baseball leather. when I say licorice, I meant black licorice too, by the way. Yeah. Yeah. No, wait a minute. Yeah. I'm getting Is that current? I'm getting a Is it Yeah, like a little bit of current. Yeah. There's something I don't know that is. Yeah. I always feel like I need to invest in one of those nosing. Like one. do you really? Yeah, we should do that. We should do that for an episode. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, 'cause I it's always the I I there's something there that's different than what I'm normally used to smelling on this. What exactly that thing is. I'm getting a lot of wood. Yeah. Curious. And I said that without giggling. I try not to call you out on me. But it's like a fresh cut fresh s saw. Yeah. S sawn sod. Yeah, I still am getting like the licorice current. I don't know what that I have no idea what to expect now for the It's definitely different than this. Right. And that is a phenomenal legs. Look at how look how slow those drips. Same here. Yep. That is crazy. Underproof again? Hundred and thirteen point two. I wish I could tell you. Sawdust? Is that just the Oak smell? Wow. I think it puts the palette puts the nose in perspective. You're just getting a part of the palate, but I think Maybe on the finish you get some of that original nose? I got the same lip burn on the first sip as I did as this. Same spot. Really weird. I I don't know if I've ever had that before. Hmm. Man, I the palette does match the nose really, really well on this, but I still can't can't pinpoint exactly what it is. I still stick with like black licorice is what I'm catching out of this. So I'm getting You're right, the legs are crazy, by the way. So I'm getting notes that are very similar to the Monks Road 5th District 2. Yep. The the toasted chart. And I think that's where I'm getting the current. But that that that baseball glove leather smell comes through on the back and the finish of the palette to me. The current is right up front. Yeah. It's like a dark cherry. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Dark dark. Like That's really good. Hm. It's like when you have strawberry shortcake and the strawberries are fermented. Yeah. They're like they're aged yeah. Aged in the in the sauce. No, It's the deep the legit one. old fashioned just strawberries and sugar and yeah. Put away. Yeah. Let that thing set for a couple of days, then make your pie. Yeah. Yeah. Mm. Yeah, I really like the nose on this though. Yeah. Can't believe we waited so long to open this. Yeah. Cause this came out I probably at least well, the the date on the bottle is September of twenty twenty four and it's barrel twenty two. So it's bat barrel batch. Barrel. Barrel. That's so that's a batch. That one's a batch. Okay. This one says barrel. So this is a single barrel. Yeah. That's that's nice. I wish I knew exactly. That's gonna drive me nuts. Yeah, I'm getting that glove leather and I'm getting a little bit of sawdust. But it's like the sawdust when the saw gets hot. A little bit of burn yeah, charge. Yeah. Yeah. But It's almost time to change the blade on a chainsaw. Doing more burning than I am cutting. Yeah. Man, I like it. That's good. Yeah. This is we always talk about neither of us loves rye. We taste a lot of rice through here. Yeah. This one is on a short list for me. Where's Danto at, Kentucky? Wow. Maybe we need to go while we're down there. Yeah. Cause if this is what their single barrels taste like. See what they got there. Or look for it while we're down there. Thirty six miles southwest of Lexington. So we'd have a hike. So that's over there towards Logstill. Yeah. Bird sound. I think we might have to That is so rich and complex. Yeah. A nine year Like that. Hmm. Yep. Heritage nine year has arrived. Yeah, and it's not very often that when we're tasting that I wanna go, I should pour some more. Yeah. Yeah. 'Cause you know you're bad about just say let's try this one since we're here. Six six bottles later, here we go. Yeah, I'm happy with that one. Yeah, it's good. Good choice. I'm glad we finally did it. Yeah. Literally, this is like since the start we've been talking about wanting to come back around to do this thing. Yeah. And I well I don't know what it for a while there it's because I I just didn't have it in the site, you know. But yeah, what a good what a good bottle. Yeah. Both of them. That's nice. So we'll have to remember that. Yeah. That's a good rando. Yeah. Yep. I like it. What else haven't we opened? I do want to open that River Roots one. Are we doing that now? Let's do it. Like I just wonder if you I don't know if I have one of those around. I might have one in my house too. Yeah. So the other one I would be considered that I do want to do. is the the Green River. Yeah. Well let's do those two. Yeah. Well we doing right now? Yeah. Alright. Shuffle these boys around. So I have two bottles. One is the single barrel bourbon whiskey. Okay. It's an OHLQ number 16 pick. The other one I have is the Kentucky Strait Weeded Bourbon single barrel. Yeah. Cask strength, it's not a distiller pick. The weeded is 122.8 proof. The bourbon whiskey single barrel OHLQ pick. is 125.8. Hello. All right. So let's do the weeded one first. Mm-hmm. Maybe. No perfs, no pulls. table of shame. Maybe. found one. Born this? Yeah. Splash me. Not that way. So this says founded by John W. McCullough in 1885 as Kentucky's 10th oldest distillery, Green River was celebrated for her quality and became known as the Whiskey Without Regrets. Before being lost to history after Prohibition, once again, Green River whiskey is crafted at its original home. I love those stories. We did single barrel expression showcases a unique full-body flavor from our favorite brick house locations. So Green River is owned by Bargetown Bourbon Company. Yeah. they actually formed a parent company to manage both of them. but they I think they're doing some things in. Collaboration now too. what is that? Well it was almost a trail. Yeah. Mm. Yeah. It's weedy. Yeah. kinda reminds me of that Augusta. Yeah. Yeah. Weeded single barrel. Sweet. Yeah. But grape Kool Aid on the network. Get a little bit of the ethanol. I mean it's a fresh crack. Well, I also think that it's got the proof too. I think that's the part that I catch is that where we go from one thirteen, it's not that big a leap. I it's proofy. Yeah. And to your point maybe it's just that it's the fresh crack, but Getting more of that. I don't notice the proof on the on the nose like I do on the palate, but But I get more of the the grape. Yeah. Yeah with that. I it's a it's a good flavour. I I do like it. I The finish isn't as long as the one we just had. Yeah. kinda got a flat finish. Yeah. and I think is that the weeded part of this? Is that what maybe, but I've had some really good We just pulled this after two rise though too. That's the part that proof no proof that And it doesn't say whether this is cold chill filtered or not. Like the those Jeffersons we did last night, they all had a a really good finish on it because they were nonchill filtered, you know, so they had a some of those fats yeah still in it. Yeah, I don't know. I think this is gonna have to be on the come back after a little while. Yeah. Ye l the the finish or aftertaste starts to turn a little bitter. Yeah. Just a little bit. I think it's a little rare for the for a weeder too. That's the Yeah. Mid palette's really nice. It's got a really nice mid palate flavor. little more of a finish on that one but still Yeah there's a little bit of funk in there too. Yeah. All right. So the last one Maybe. Sucker for a QR. Maybe one doesn't want to pick it up. So this one's 125.8 cask strength. These are two older names. Both of them, the Balsaton and the Green River. Yeah, I'm getting a little bored, that Kentucky hug. Yeah. And for a weeder, I guess I'm surprised by that. That's the but it's also proof. I mean we jumped. This one smells even sweeter. It smells sweeter, but there's something in it that I don't know that I'm a f big fan of it. Like It's like raw grass or or rye or I don't know. I get it reminds me of baling hay. When I bale hay as a kid. I've not done that. I can see why you would say that. Like so we every other year we do alfalfa. Okay. Out at the farm. And that's that's what it smells like to me. It's got the sweetness, but then it has that Is that what we're gonna go from four grains to five grains to eleven grains? Alfalfa's one of Mix it in there. But it's just that wet grass when you go out to mow it or to cut it. Well, now you're speaking my language. Let's talk about cutting grass, but I don't know. Spend a lot of time in those fields. Yeah. It brings back memories now. Mm-hmm. That's an easy spore. yeah. That's one of the things I know. This is the hierarproof? Yeah. Yeah. Hmm. Interesting. that's got a nice finish on it too. Yeah. That's different. Not what I was expecting at all. No. So that's nice. This was the OHL Q pick, wasn't it? Or is that it? That one is. Okay. The weeded was not a pick. Hm, interesting. So it doesn't the finish does not turn bitter at all. It just stays that like that nice dark fruit. Yeah. And I get a lot of that fruit and sweetness up front. Caramel. Wow. And it's like coats the tongue. I tell you what, the flav the it lasts too. Yeah. I'm impressed. That one. Yeah, that limited release and this one. Yeah, that's what I just went back to. The nose on this is still really nice. Yeah. Mm. That's a nice little pour. Yeah. I'll have to say that's gonna be the other one that's gonna be like, Hey, yeah. Have you tried this yet? Yeah. Kudos. Listen, I think that weeders get the attention at a certain point. But that regular bourbon is I like it. O of the two, that's that's what I like the best. Yeah. Good on Green River. Wow. Single barrel too. I mean Right. I guess you've got your mom I mean, well, we got a great barrel. I don't know. And both of those are non shell filtered. Yeah. Go figure. Hm. I like it. I like it. Yeah. Yeah. So got a of work this week. Same. Buried. Yeah. And we also got kids getting c close to back to school. That's the we did school shopping today. So it has been tax free weekend. You missed it. but it was listen, the stores were packed. It's time. So we got it we got everything my kids needed too. I'm done done. So it's on the list of things I always take the kids to do. is it's my f it's my favorite thing is taking kids school shopping. Daddy, can I get this extra nice? Yes, yes you can. Get that thing. My son actually said to me, he goes, Man, daddy, school shopping is fun. Which yeah, 'cause I'm giving you whatever you want, brother. That's why. So yes. Yeah. Yeah. Cause you're gonna want to wear this. Well not even clothes. It was just supplies. It wasn't even clothes. It was just pens and paper and highlighters. So it was at like We do clothes throughout the year. Like they got more and they know what to do with come school time. But like my daughter loves picking out fancy folders and everything else. So yeah, we'll do that. But yeah. Like football cleats. Yeah, you got cross country tennis shoes, you know. And and the boys know that I'm gonna Well it's the same way at my house. That's the other thing. My mu my wife usually does clothes, I usually do the shoes. So yeah. We are regulars on the Nike app. My son has practice soccer cleats. He's got game cleats. He's got yeah. Yep. Yep. Yeah. Well Wesley just got his new cleats. And of course Wyatt and Asher got their new Brooks running shoes across country. So Yeah. Yeah. They're set. Of course those shoes are only gonna last a couple months. Yeah. Yeah, by the time they grow out of yeah. Yeah. Unluckily Lily doesn't grow. Like the shoes she wears she can wear for two years. Why it's in the my size now. Wes is Well they're all taller than you, yeah. Yeah. he he's still like five eleven. He's got another half inch. Okay. and Wes is just a half inch below him. So it's it's Yeah, they're all there. Yeah. Yeah. But it's funny. well. They just keep growing. Keep feeding them boys. and I'll tell you. So we won a gift basket, a Chick-fil-A gift basket. dear Lord. And it had like fifty of those free Chick-fil-A sandwich cards in it. So I'm taking the three boys. We're gonna go to Chick-fil-A, and gonna take cards, right? So I I gonna grab like four or five cards. And then each boy's like, No, no, no, we need more. We need I'm gonna eat three myself. So we ended up taking seven of these Chick-fil-A cards. It saved like fifty bucks. Yeah. You know, in in in sandwich costs. and I had one sandwich. I love it. I mean that's Listen, I remember these days, my brother and I. Yes. Yep. And I know it's coming for me. Yeah. Yeah. I just don't have three, that's the difference. Eat you out of house and home at that base. Yeah, and that's after a day of yeah, you know, four or five hours of marching band and And football two day of football and getting ready to go to cross country practice. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. That's funny. Yeah, we had soccer games yesterday and today. We yeah, we'll have practice a couple days this week. So we did it's supposed to rain though. It's supposed to rain all week. You're gonna end up driving through it tomorrow, I bet. I'm taking the convertible to Chicago to you're not gonna have it down. supposed to start raining tonight. That's okay. I got a new win I got new wiper blades. I've treated the car. That makes a huge difference. That'll be fine. Yeah. It's gonna be a fun ride. Yeah. Enjoy it. It's awesome. We go what, a week? Week from today, we're out of Dodge, yeah. Yeah, one week. So I think now we're we might go down Saturday night. Are you? Okay. I'm not I'm leaving Sunday. and then So what you'll so that way you have Sunday down there. So Sunday will be in Barstown. Okay. But we're gonna So we're looking, I've got a 330 Heaven Hills tour. Okay. The the you do you bourbon tour or whatever it is. But I was looking at it, but Maker's Mark opens at eleven thirty on Saturday. On Sunday. On s on Sunday. Okay. So I think what we're gonna do is we're gonna go down and stay overnight in Cincinnati. Yeah. And then continue down to Makers Mark Sunday morning. Okay. And then get there. Do your Heaven Hill. Do Makers Mark first. And then head up to Heaven Hill. It's nice. Yeah. I've been in there, I didn't do a tour or anything, but their gift shop and everything's super nice. There's a nice restaurant bar upstairs. Yeah, everybody says Makers Mark is like the one of the most beautiful distilleries. Makers is nice too, yeah. But I figure we'll do dinner probably at Heaven Hill since we'll do the tour at three thirty. Yeah. Cool. Yeah. And then Monday morning. Monday morning. So I told him late morning, so we'll Okay. We'll arrive and Do the meet and greet and then get all set up and sweet. Go from there. Figure out how we're doing it. My my box of Happy Van Winkle traditional cigars came in. did it? Good. Yeah. So that's all ready and they are humidified. Yeah, it's just gonna be loading the cases. Yeah. Go over we go. So looking forward to it. Pack up the shelf. Yeah. Taking everything. Yeah. Yeah. Going too. Yeah, it'd be a nice trip. Yeah, well. Yeah. Looking forward to that. So I Tonight was great. Yeah. I Two surprises. Yeah. One that listen, I think this one was we we used it because this one I don't know. I think we're gonna have to give it a little bit time. Yeah. I mean, I think the flavor's there, but I just think it it's a little rough around the edges. Yeah. Just for a fresh crack. Yeah, that's that's fair. Very cool. But that limited release, Paul Sutton. Surprise you. that's just wonderful. Yeah, cut it's almost s it's almost got a cigar to it too. Yeah. Yeah. now come back to it, yeah. Is this the one I said that I had like I thought it was licorice at first? Maybe that's what it is. Yeah. Anise. Anis. Anis. Yeah. But I'm still getting that ball of fall glove leather. Yep.
