Dan, Steph, And Bob: evening. How's everybody tonight? Hello. â to Bourbon Brass and Beyond. Tonight, Steph is joining us. Yeah, I'm here for the Jefferson. Sneaking for the good stuff. Yes, that's right. Yeah. â So really liked that Jefferson presidential rye 21 year. Yeah, which we still have. Hopefully you're it for me. â This my little tiny little sample that I'm keeping. But so found a Jefferson â presidential 16 year, which this is a 2017 release, batch one, bottle 1774. So pretty early in it. It's a twin-oaked. So it was barreled 11 years and then re-barreled into a new oak charred barrel for five years. So this is double, double-oaked before double, double-oaked was double, double-oaked? â Is what that means? I think so. I think so. I wonder what the double oak meant. Is that what it means? Yeah, it's been enjoyed. â they switch barrels. Okay. Double double oak. All right. Versus double oak. Yeah, double double. Well, does that mean four? Wait, yeah. Or does that mean three? We just inception here. Hold We're going to back up. don't know. this reminds me of my cargo fire procedures. You have to press this button twice or if you're in the air three times if you're on the ground or four times if something else. Yeah. Speaking of double double oak, it's still sitting on the shelves. I just need to go get one. Yes, it's good. Yeah, I think there were like three left. And this is an old one, right? So we could compare old versus new if we did that. I should go get one. Right. Definitely. And it's not an old dusty, but it's dusty. is dusty. It is dusty. So it should be interesting. Yeah. Someone's collection. Right. That they didn't open, which is crazy. Well, it's like that Russell's Reserve 2003 distillation. You had it, yeah. Yeah. Oh, no, that. Oh, that was from the same. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I thinking the one you had. So this is, the other one we're going to have tonight is an orphan barrel 17 year. It's the Fang Pursuit. I was a real big fan of the orphan barrel rhetoric. And this is from that same, well, Stitzelweller. new Stitzelweller. Yeah, the really, really good stuff. Right. â I had that â it was really good, but I just figured they're the similar age. Same age. Cause I think that one was technically 16 and a half years old. So. like it. Here we go. â Yeah, there's no fear about anything sitting around here to just be a collection. It's definitely going to get open. No, have it. don't even know. There's a couple, I guess. It's like it's â there's stag that's unopened, but we have other. think I have that same one that he has closed already. Yeah, I have two stags that are unopened but I just haven't had reason to. Breaking the Dust. Get a little bit of dust in the bourbon. So this is 90. 94 proof. So this is a 16 year, but you said they also have a 17 and a 21. They have a 17 and 18 and a 21. Oh, okay. So the 17 year actually came out first and it was old Stitzelweller barrels. Yeah. But this is a Kentucky bourbon. So this isn't MGP. It's got good nose on it. I can smell it just as soon as I pulled it over. Caramel and vanilla. Yeah, for sure. I was pouring it and I was getting... You could smell it. Nice and dark. Are we going to finish off that sample tonight to compare that against this? No, we're not. I'm going to put that in a flask and just carrying it with me everywhere I go. Just in case. So I'm getting a lot of caramel, a lot of vanilla. Not a lot of spice. I mean, it's good aged and it's not ethanol. â my God. That's okay. Okay. like it so smooth. I feel like that might be the smoothest bourbon I've ever tasted from start to finish. I'm not even going into taste or anything like that. Totally just feeling. So I'm eating like a little bit of tart fruit. And not as much caramel. It's not like a dark sugar sweetness. It's a lighter sweetness, almost like a honey sweetness. â I can see that one. I the nose is on this crazy good. Yeah, and that's that's really Look at the Yeah, well, that's the part that I was looking at here. Yeah, yeah. So we're definitely fans of the Jefferson products. Presidential at least. Yeah. I've got a couple others we should probably try mixing. You have one too, right? have ocean cask string. I have a couple others too. should try and... No. It just reminds me when you said that one bourbon had that really buttery feeling in your mouth. That's kind of what I get. It just coats everything so nicely. There's no burn at all. Well, that's the part for you said there's a 90 and a 94. pretty impressed with how, like just the texture and the way it holds the glass for that low of a proof, I guess. And I did some research on the bottle. This wasn't the most sought after of the presidentials that worked. mean, the 17 year and the 21 year. this is actually very good. There's like graham cracker or something in there. Maybe that's just that you got me stuck on vanilla and marshmallow. Is that like am I making s'mores over here like you guys are so funny? Graham Graham cracker like I'm just like â I there's like You're just I'm just not honed into the bourbon â My nose always feel like I get a better sense of the smell than I of the taste when I taste it â I don't think have is â Yeah, I go to palette as I do a nose on things. But even when you guys smell it, you definitely have your a lot of different things it could smell like. I'm kind of like, it smells like sweet bourbon. It smells like ethanol-y bourbon. So I think one of the last episodes was the first time I really noticed a smell, a different smell out of each nostril. Yeah. You said that too. Yeah. Yeah. So I think it's a learned trait. You're teaching yourself how to sense certain They have scent kits that we should get you. You know what? Yes, he mentioned that before. I would be interested because I just am not Smell this and see if you smell it on that. Differentiate like you guys are. Smell that. good. I like it. Yeah. I a little more, I get a little bit of the rye. I'm tasting a little bit of the rye. That's probably where that graham cracker comes from. â But it's just light pepper. This just really pleasant. I that double, double oak was really good. Yeah, it was crazy good. I feel like that's going to get broken out again tonight. No, think we wait till we get the new one. I think that's my take. Is that where we can go? I would like to it up against another one. Yeah. I think that one is, â I mean, this is good bottle. Don't get me wrong. But that thing was just, â I liked it. Yeah, but I think this is up there. Yeah. I think that's this, this tastes, think if you're just bourbon light, you're not, you're not that into bourbon, you can drink this and it's just really nice. It's not going to burn off your tongue. one of the things I read, said you should compare this with a lot B. â But I think, â think the lot B is going to be â but just that wheat. â going to have a different taste. Yeah. But. All on the next. So this is Orphan Barrel, it's a Stitzel Weller, new Stitzel Weller. Fang Pursuit, they became famous with their name the Orphan Barrels because of the rhetoric stuff. What they did is they found a whole bunch of old barrels in the warehouse and they just batched them together. Same age, all right, you're 21. These are all 21 years old. We'll mix them together, we'll bottle them. And then the next year. that was still barreled, they're now the 22, and it just went down the line. It's not finished. Double double quadruple uncle dog dare you. Finished. So this is a bobcat. The story on this one is it's named after the bobcat because it's stealthy. you had to go for that because of Ohio University. Go bobcats! Go cats! What do think? I'm picking up a little of the rye on the nose. was, it's earthy is the way I was. I mean it has, is bean? Like that? That was first. But I'm getting like, â It's like a grape, like a... yeah, like a grape kool-aid. Yeah. What's the proof on this one? Did you say? 92. Oh, that's totally different. Yeah. And compared to the other one, it's. He's got a little bit more rye bite to it. A little more rye bite. And I think it. It mellows the sweetness. Yeah, I'll agree with that. This to me tastes more like an MGP. I mean, you said this was this was Stitzel-Weller Yeah. So MGP is? Michter's Group. Okay. What's it stand for? MGP? Mikters group? I don't know. never. Producers? I'm not really sure. I honestly don't know. I've looked. They do the Mikters, the Shanks, the Bombergers. Well, they also, they also barrel for just half the everybody else. Yeah. Like anybody who's NDP in is a lot of that's coming from MGP. Yeah. Non-distilling producer. Yeah, sorry. lot of that's coming from them. know, this is it. It's, this is Dan speak. So there's a lot of like, when he talks about his piloting, he'll talk. You need your own warning light. Yeah, there's just all kinds of numbers and letters thrown at me and I don't know what any of it means. So this was technically a year older even right? 17 yeah. I feel like this is a tough drink after that first one. I feel like it's... I mean, I don't... It's good, but to the bigger... It does have a stronger rye bite to it. It does. Yeah. I don't know what the... I mean, I can't remember what Stitzel's Mash Bill is on this either. I'm not really sure. Yeah. Do you think if you had this first maybe your opinion would be different? I don't know. I'll say that like the mouth feel and the finish is long lasting on it. Yeah. So it stays very consistent. It has a great mouth feel. It has more of the rye taste, which I think I â tend Yeah, we talked about this. You know, two guys who don't love rye, we do a lot of ryes. Right. But I think we found some good ones. Yeah, I agree. Yeah. That have rye. But like that Castle and Key, wheated that. You can have that. Yeah, I don't want that. Okay. That's it. should just come back. It's not. Listen, listen, I, I don't know. Maybe I was having a strange moment. I tried that and I did not. Were you drunk already? I had not had anything else. don't think. Well, it's okay. Yeah, I'll try it again. But if I like it, I mean, then it's just gonna stay. It's gonna burn. have way different tastes. It doesn't even get to come back. It's got to sit over there. I I was that I said, why is it sitting over there with like my pictures and nope, not allowed. different table. Can't sit on the same shelf some of these come on now. What about the other the other little bar? Can't even be in there with those ones? That's where it was right? I didn't want to spend the energy to carry it there. Walking way back up accidentally drop it on the kitchen floor. Whoops. Oh it's not gonna break. bet you could throw that on the floor it wouldn't break. It would bounce right back up. You'd intentionally land on your toe just to push you off even more. man, you guys are down on the castle and key. Well, guess drink it. That thing was like athletic socks. Enjoy. Yeah. You there's lot science behind that. So the smell and taste of â athletic socks. â Here we â This pilot thing. No, I'm sorry. So â there is a thing called syndrome where Occasionally a seal can go in the engine and then the hot air and oil from the engine go through the bleed system in the airplane. There's been documented cases of this. It can be deadly because it's a neurotoxin. It's burned oil at certain point too. Aviation oil in jet engines specifically have a certain neurotoxin in them. ingested. So, â one the things that you would smell is either the smell dirty socks or there's two They've actually done a lot of tests on there's two different Or it's something extremely sweet. Is it an added smell or is that just with like, cause like they make that as like natural gas as a natural or a smell added to it, right? This is the natural byproduct of that Not good. No. So now you're comparing it. No, it's jet fuel. No, I burned jet fuel and sweaty socks. I would rather have the oil in the air than that. That's not funny. You could die. It's neurotoxin. It's terrible. Yeah, but but there's a lot of science in that the smell and taste of dirty socks. Yeah. And or you're either going to smell that or you're going to genetically smell. â yeah. Okay. Depending on you're makeup is you smell something. Crazy. And they'll actually do this with a jelly bean test. So they've actually made the dirty socks smell and in that super sweet smell into jelly beans and you go around a room and it's 60 40 60 % of people will smell it as it's the same jelly. Is he talking about Harry Potter jelly beans? Is that what we're doing right now? Is this a thing like this one tastes like vomit and this one tastes are deep in the pot of a talk right now. We're deep in it. What's the deal with this? I actually have a friend of mine, Captain Eric Tellman he actually had this happen. And he goes around and speaks about it. And one of things he does is gives out these jelly beans to see which one everybody tastes and smells. So you know in the future. Exactly. You're going to get the dirty socks just for the way you're talking about it. You're not going to get the sweet. I'm going to get sweet and you guys are going dirty socks. You liked dirty socks is what we've learned. No, it's sweet to me. It's dirty socks to you. How do you like that? Yeah, I guess. Tell me about other recessive traits you have that we just learned about. I'm all recessive. Big recessive trait. Well, to pivot, I'm just going to take a moment to do a shout out to our friend Jessica and her boyfriend, Curtis, because the friend group found out this week that he's a wrestler and he's wrestling in the area. Tomorrow night. And you're going with Oh, yeah. I'm taking my kids. I'm trying to get my son in the ring. It's all fun and games until I body slam a seven year old. I guess I was just, it's just shocked. It's like when you find out that like some person you know has this like alter ego that you never would have even imagined. I've seen him before. It's a good time. It's well, you know, if, if we weren't going, we would all be there for sure. So I'm going with Chris and his daughter. We're Nice. And you gotta work. I would have told you, but you had to work. I have to work. I'm gonna call off. Totally worth it. But I hope he doesn't... hope this isn't his last time. This is his like seventh last time. Curtis, if you're watching... You gotta wait till we can all see you. Yeah. This is a big deal. But anyway, I thought, you know, just knowing him casually like I do, he seemed a little bit more like quiet, reserved. Did not expect him to be standing up in the ring jumping off the... Yeah. I think it's amazing. Yeah. To find out what people do in their spare time. I have a hard enough time getting out of bed in the morning. Could you imagine trying to do that after you wrestle? Heck no. jumping off the ropes on other people. Yeah, that's very cool. you guys finished this. I'll go back to my other one. Still a little of So I feel like we need a closer. You know, do we close this chapter? I mean, I definitely â really like the Jefferson's presidential. I don't think that Jefferson's cask strength oceans would do it justice. No, I agree. So you got to have something that's going to do. I think we're going to have to... We always got to add like four more. We're just getting I felt like he was going to go for the lobby. No, that was like an AI suggestion. I think if you're going to go presidential, you have to go the president's choice. The rye as well, right? â no, you got the bourbon. I got the bourbon, but I mean it has a rye in it, but I think that... A little higher proof. Well, not huge, but a little higher. this what we're doing? I think that's what we're doing. You more? Yeah. you Yeah, I'll a little bit. Just little. â don't think I've tried this. You tried it? Okay, so now, so what you're saying is... The President's Choice is just one type of old forester. Is that what saying? Okay. Yes. So this is the old forester. She's gonna say, what's he doing? President's Choice. It's quite a bore. I'm surprised she stopped there when she went that far. This is worth it. So this one is aged at least 101 months in barrel 111 and it was 56.9 % alcohol or 113.8 proof. Mmm. Ooh. again. This feels like it's gonna be â I think the nose is just... Yeah, it does smell nice. It smells nice. Yeah, I think once I swirled it around a little bit. been open for a while, right? This â this year's, â it's been 20, â yeah. Yeah. Sorry. Last summer. Yeah. So only released like 12 bottles and like it was weird. Three different places. So I was actually this is one of those random four PM, six PM releases that you had be the right place at the right time. It was a nine AM release. â that. Yep. And â I showed up, I got one of the bottles, but it was the rye, is actually more rare than the bourbon. But I wanted the bourbon, I didn't want the rye. So found somebody that got the bourbon at the place that got that. You didn't go to? Yeah, and we swapped. â You know. I think that one has the best finish, like the best taste. Yeah, it's a little hotter. It tastes a little hotter. I wouldn't say it tastes It's not too hot. I wouldn't say it's 113.8. Yeah. But would say that it's 107, 108. Yeah. that's where it drinks. But it is like a syrupy, sweet. And I like the sweet finish versus I feel like the orphan barrel was a very non-sweet finish. The Jefferson's presidential was literal neutral. When you went back to this, did you still like it better? I didn't actually take a sip, so I'm going to take a sip now. I feel like you've talked about this as the one you were excited for this one. This is the one you wanted to. Yeah. I what this is missing for me is that really nice â and wondering flavor, but just the way it feels. I like I was just swishing something around in my mouth. â That be really nice. â But that presidential, I think, has one of the best finishes. Yeah. Yeah, I'll agree. The old Forester. â the old Forester. Yeah. It has a much better finish than the birthday bourbon. really? yeah, in my opinion it has a much better finish than the birthday bourbon. No, I think the birthday bourbon has a better nose Okay. But I think this has a much better finish. We better it out. Wait, is it open? Yeah, it's open. Yeah. It's a lot thinner. This is? Yeah. think it's only 92 proof or 94 proof. Well, this their, yeah, this is one of their, this is their B-Tac basically. Yeah. What I've found, I've told Dan before is when I take a drink of water before I take a sip, it's a lot nicer for me. Of this? I of really anything, but I really think I need that. personally, kind of to have that. That water in your mouth. Change it up. Well, they say water is what releases the flavor in the bourbon. I don't know. I mean, it's got really good legs on it. crazy. dogs are trying to get in here. They're going crazy out there. They smell it. They want it. I told dogs earlier. No, they can't have. No. You're cut off. Yeah. Benchmark for you. They don't like that. is the Thomas Handy. We've given them personalities. And say Banksy is probably like an old rip 10. Maybe Old Forester's just not my palette or something. It's not my favorite. So I I think it depends. know, the I the ones that are deeper, sweeter, and â have the little bit of the cocoa notes. Like I get a little bit of the cocoa notes in the presidential. I get the real deep And I do like â Yeah. I mean, I see the, I guess I can smell, not see, smell what you're talking about. But it's the palette, I guess. don't. Hmm. So 111 months, just under 10 years. They're aging it like you do a baby. know, you're like, my child is 38 months old. Yeah, but the problem is that at a certain point you're like, I can't remember all these months, you just go to years. I have no idea what that means, 111 months, okay. It's just 111 months. They're just trying to confuse everyone, so you're just looking at it be like, I don't know, just buy it. Well, that way they probably do that, because they would not have to round down and call it. Nine years, they get to call it 111 months. That's true. They didn't it that extra month. Contra with the Okie Doke. 111? Oh my goodness. It's those â magazines when you're checking out the grocery store, you know? It's always like 100 ways to find your guy, 300 to do whatever. like they're always at your big numbers. Well, I'm sure someone can do math here. What is is hundred and eleven months? How many years? Ten would be one twenty. short of that. So it's ten years, three months. years, years, nine years. You're right. Carry the Something like that. So I think if I were just to say I want to drink one of these, it would probably be the Jeffersons. Yeah, I agree. The orphan barrel, I'm good. Never tasting that again. okay. I'm good. Check it off the list. Done. And it's a decent bourbon, I would say. Well, that's what I say. I started with the good ones. wait, she's here. Never mind. It's I know. that sounds about right. Yeah. I see the money come out of â our It's not a secret. I don't even remember when I got that. Yeah. To be honest, it's probably been a couple of Hmm. This is a good Learn a bit, a little bit, and taste a little bit. â Fantastic. I am super happy with that. I agree. It was a good find. Yeah. That's a one. But I think I'd like to taste the old ones. I would, you know what? Maybe you just need to buy more old bottles. I think that's a great idea. Yeah, I think so too. Yeah, I think it's a great idea. That's permission to go find a Jefferson's 21. Let's go find some more dusty old original batch ones and we'll go. That's April's permission. March has already been taken with this and the Russells and the Lobby. were three bottles. Well, there were three bottles. Yeah. Yeah. So April, it's almost here. You almost made it. Well, right. But there is a there is. So tomorrow morning at Giant Eagle, they're saying that you're going to get some. Well, there's Elijah Craig 18. still some double double oaks floating around. WB Sapple. Yeah. Which I was really happy with that WB Sapple. It's a lot hotter than this, but it's a good one. Yeah, Jefferson. That's good. Do you even say some Taylor Bear? Oh, really? didn't see that. Is this a giant eagle? Yeah, supposedly. Well, we're carrying over from what happened today to what happened tomorrow. Oh, okay. Was it good? Yeah, fantastic. Thank Thank you. Well, folks, thanks for watching. Please like. follow, subscribe, and the new one is hand share. So please like, follow, subscribe, Don't forget that part. Yeah. Well, I think, the dog's very loud. The dogs are just going to town. think too, like, comment what you guys think about these bourbons if you've tried them. Yeah. Because I think that's important too, to hear what other people have to say about them. Yeah. And someone's going to back up my castle and key. No, â not. No, not. So, if you don't like the Castle & Key weeded, tell us the best way to dispose of it. You guys Rolling down the hill, porting the creek. Yes. The official hated at that point though too. We're going to put it your koi pond and see how that goes. Please no. Still scooping leaves. This wind has been killer. Yeah. Oh man. Yeah. It's either a windstorm or it's freezing or it's warm. Or there's a meteor exploding. we got it all. Didn't have that in Ohio. anyway, I know you're trying to wrap it up. So no, that's quite all right. But you. see you here in a few days. â Everybody have good Good night. good night. Thanks.
