Dan and Bob: Well hello. good evening. How's everybody doing tonight? Welcome to Bourbon Brass and Beyond. Tonight, a little something different. Yeah. These are OHLQ single barrel picks of Frey Ranch. Now I've heard a lot of good things about these bottles. You know, â one is a four-grain, so it's gonna, you know, corn, wheat, rye, â and barley. And then the other one's a five grain. What the heck's the fifth grain? think it must be healthier for you. Yeah. Because it throws oats in there. And oats are supposed to be good for something. week is twelve grain. Right. Right. yeah, these are fresh cracks. Have not opened these yet. These were you said O H L Q store packs. What I don't even remember when these hit. Was this Like this is three weeks ago now? Yeah, I think so. wow. â They they got some â got some oomph to them too. So this one the four slow grown grains. â Okay. That's a heavy ass bottle. Yeah, it is. It's gotta be the bottom, right? Like there's a ton of glass. Yeah, it's like cow. Yeah. I have enough problems pouring. Don't make bottle weigh twice as much. Yeah, but maybe this bottle wouldn't break. Yeah, well. I saw that picture my stomach sank for you. Yeah. So this â drink will in remembrance. the America's 250 edition of Yellowstone. Yellowstone. It It did it wasn't here for 24 hours, was it? It was not here for an hour. I shouldn't Sorry. I'll post the Yeah. but yeah, I was just tired and I was trying to adjust some bottles on the shelf and not only did I break the bottle, I broke the shelf. Yeah when I came down. So am waiting on a replacement shelf now â â then I'll get the bottles put back up. But yeah. Sad day. Sad day. All excited 'cause I got one of those. Get the carpet cleaner and extract it all back out. Like that's the worst part. I got the glass out of it and I didn't do anything else. funny. I figure it already smells like bourbon down here. Yeah why not? Yeah. Who needs an air fresher? I'll just it's like peanut buttery. Is that what I â that's a great nose. Yeah. Play-doh, what is that? I mean, else I Like a it's it's it's floral y it's sweet. And I'll be honest, because I tried a single barrel pick a fray ranch f in Indiana. It was a store pick. Okay. And I wasn't a big fan, but and the nose turned me off on it. Yeah. But this nose this is a nice nose. I am getting a little peanut, but it's like a honey r honey roasted peanut. Yep, that is yeah. These aren't finished already. â That's nice. That's like a So this one is one seventy barrel number eighteen dash zero three three zero. So does that mean it was from twenty eighteen? So eight old. years, yeah. One â one twenty point proof. Four grain whiskey. Now this is from like the ranch out in Nevada. they grow an all they grow all their own grains. Mm. All right. That was a lot sweeter than what I was thinking. Yeah. It's got that same extra the same thing that we're smelling in there stays on the palate as well. I can taste it. But you get like a Dr. Pepper after finish. Yeah. You know, like that sweet cola Dr. Pepper. The flavor holds. Yeah. And you don't get any of the you don't get any like real bite. I mean you get a little tingle, but you don't get any bite from it. Wow, that's good. I'm all right. Is it that good on accident because it's an OHL Q pick? Well. I'm not gonna go that far yet. I don't you know what I mean, like we'll see, we'll get into a second one, but I â I don't know if I love that after f like the aftertaste on that. It's a it's it's a darker it's like a darker sh more sweet I still the nose is different and nice. It's not one twenty five it doesn't â it's not got that and we've talked about a couple of these that are great bottles that have that strong ethanol on the on on the nose and I don't catch that out of this. What is that? Anis? â that that flavor that maybe licorice? Yeah. Little more corn on the second sip. Yeah. I like it. It's but it's like a heavier It's different. All right, I'm gonna leave a little bit in the glass. Yeah, I think that's where I'm at on it too. back. Let's see what's adding extra whole grain? Yes. â And again, these are fresh cracks. Yeah. Yeah, but I don't usually it's the ethanol that you get a little bit of I'm getting a little bit of a I guess it's called a Nevada hug. Yeah. Well, at one twenty five I guess you should. You need a heavier bottle. That thing you didn't spill it all. Yeah. We just found your secret. It's a weighting thing. It's more weighted in the hand, you know. Of course easier. Now this one bottle number ninety seven from barrel number twenty dash zero five one nine. So this will maybe a little younger. And this is one hundred and twenty five point seven proof. Distilled from five slow grown grains. Does that make them better? They slow the wheat down so it doesn't mature as fast? Yeah, maybe. They're all Steelers fans. talk about those bottles. Well, is black and yellow. Hmm. So as florally on the name. It's a little bit more mellow, yeah. Yeah. Again, I that doesn't surprise me if we're adding oat, even if it's only a tiny bit. Yeah. Much more mellow. Yeah. Yeah, like this like I said, this had a a strong not what I've would have not one of the main notes that I would have pulled out of whiskey. This has got something else in it. Like it's not as barrel chart. It's not as whatever. Tell me that we had these backwards and that this was the five grain or this was the five grain and it was the extra grain was this thing I was smelling in here. I would believe that. But realistically I think the fifth grain gives it a little bit more mellow, consistent there's not one thing that smacks you in the face. Yeah. Great legs. I was just looking at the legs on your glass. Yeah. Yeah. A little Little more of a licorice bite to me. Like it's got mean if all we're saying is we added oats to this, I'm surprised that that's the thing that we notice, I guess. â maybe I mean I guess it doesn't say that It's not like this one was twelve percent rye and this one is all of a sudden twenty percent rye. Like tell that the that was the thing that changed and I guess that I would could see that much of a difference, but I don't I don't even know if this is on here. I didn't see it. even in a tiny print. No. The writing keeps getting smaller and smaller. I don't know why the bottles do this. Definitely not my eyes. Definitely not. I know why I can't read it up close, but I can see it perfectly from this part away. Right. the way, do you know what episode this is? No, what is this? Six seven. what what episode six seven. Don't tell kids. I know. Mine too. Yeah, I feel like the nose is better on this one. I gotta wait. The aftertaste in the mouth is turning a little more bitter. Yeah. Like like after you have a a a bitter cheese or something. I can see yeah. That's different. It's almost like it's got some wild turkey funk on it or something, too. Right. No, I agree with that. Get the tingle all along the tongue. â yeah. Yeah. I mean it's got a lot of flavor. It's got a lot of it and it holds well. Yeah. I I think they both hold really well. Yeah, yeah, no, I agree. I'm gonna say that I probably like the four grain better than the five grain. I think I like the I like the definitely like the nose better on the four grain. No, I like the nose better on the five grain. The five grain than the four. Really? Yeah. Is that what that is on I wish I could tell you what that was. Hm. I I think that I think I get more of the wheat on the four grain. Okay. I think the palate is more balanced on the five. I think that the it doesn't have as much of an ethanol y bite as the four. I don't I really got that bite on that last drink of the four. Yeah. Yeah. Coming back to it from the five, yeah. From from the five. Hmm. That five is a much easier supper than the four. Yeah, I'd agree. I think But I don't get that that bitter aftertaste in the four. That's fair. They're di this is different. I think that Frey Ranch is something that you either are gonna like or not like. It's not We talk about this all the time that we tend to lean towards weeded bourbons on our personal preferences. We end up doing a lot of ryes. Right. When we talk about the funk on old tur or on wild turkey, and these have a different, very distinct, similar taste to the pair of them though. Instead of a wild turkey funk they got a fray ranch fizzle, whatever you want to call that. Hm. Different. Different. I don't know if it's my thing, but it's not bad whiskey either. How much are these? I traded for these. No. Hm. Okay. And I still think it it was a worthwhile trade. Yeah. Yeah, you ended up yeah. But â just a couple of reds. Yeah. There's a lot of character in it. I will g you know, I will say. Well, and that's why I say when it y exact I feel like if you're gonna go down a path, you're gonna commit to it. They do that very, very well. Yeah. So if that's your palate, you're gonna freaking love these things. Right. If if but can see it being very divisive where you either love or you hate Frey Ranch. Right. I don't know if I fall either way yet personally. But So I really like that floral nose and the foregrain. But It reminds me of that Augusta single barrel f nose. You know, I like a grape. Yeah. Grape I like twenty percent more green in my bourbons though, or my whiskies though. Well it's not more grain, it's just â more divided. Sure. I And I do think I get a little more of the oak on the foregrain. Yeah. I I I will agree with that too. So and I tend to lean towards more oak. Oaky, yeah. I almost would think that you could tell me that this was aged in a different a non white oak barrel. And I would not that it was like it was like all of its age, not that it was a finished, but it was cured in or that it sat in something else other than white oak. And I would I I was gonna say they almost seem like they're finished. Like yeah, yeah, that's what they're port wine or something. on the four than the five, but yes, absolutely. But now it's a different environment for aging, so who knows, yeah. B this tastes or this tastes like cactuses more than yeah. Yeah. Hotter. They aged it on a nuclear test site and it's got I don't know. What else is in Nevada? Glows Wong Who see I just I really like the nose on that four. â Yeah, I think I like the five better. As consistent as we can be. Yeah. I don't know. It's just like I said, I think it's gonna these ones are gonna be either you love â or you don't. Yeah. I think this is the first time I've had a five grain, like an oat in a bourbon. Me. Me too. So that's we're gonna come up with eleven greens. What else is it? Rice. What else can we do with Yeah, a of the Japanese ones do that. and I think isn't Jim Beam doing something right now where they're blending with something else, yeah. Yeah, â Japanese special releases are the way. Yeah. â So when that Yellowstone broke yesterday, I got a really good nose of it. And I thought I didn't like it. â really? Yeah, which surprised me. Do you want mine? Or is it you just tell me this, so I'll give you mine. Well, I I would like to get one 'cause I wanted to do that for I it's a super cool. Yeah. â Yeah, when I pulled the bottle out of the can, I'm like, â that's awesome. Yeah. And then when it broke. But surprisingly, none of the other bottles that came down broke. Because they all came down. That's the part that surprised me was that for that matter, the the other Yellowstone that's from nineteen whatever, seventy whatever. Nineteen seventy was they they don't make glass like they used to is what we learned. No, no. But and all my Monks Road stuff was good. Yeah, those are built like a tank. Yeah, those are he yeah, heavy bottles. Yeah. With the best prefor perforations on him. So Bottles are tough. All right. Yeah. I like both of them. I think they have good qualities on both of them. Yep, I will agree with this. I think you're right. I think the five grain is a little smoother. Yes. It doesn't have as much of the the bite. I'm getting a little of the acid. I can feel like it's it up later. Yeah. But â I'll tell you the flavor holds on these though. Like it's Yeah, I yeah, I will say that. I will agree. Hmm. Good on them. Yeah. Frey Ranch. Frey Ranch. We should reach out to them. Why we want to go to Vegas? Can we go? Well, either that I well I'm out Bob, if you force me to go to Vegas with you trip just is ending. Let's do a boy's trip. Right. I'm unsupervised this week, so I already my joke about that. Yeah. That's why broke a bottle. Right, right. So my half is in Nantucket and Cape Cod this week. And although I am You're lonely. gone a bunch. You know, but this was weird for me. Yeah. To be home alone. Yep. But if we have to go to Vegas. Yeah, it touches my arm. I mean, so the last time I was in Vegas, well, the second to the last time I was in Vegas, went out for with a buddy, my buddy Mike. We went out for his birthday. But we went over my birthday. Okay. Because his birthday was in February. His wife wanted to get him a trip to Vegas, if but he had to go with somebody. And somehow she talked my ex-wife. into letting me go. Of course I had strict requirements, I wasn't allowed to spend any more money or anything like that. So we went out so we there the day before my birthday and then â the next morning we were supposed to get the cheapest rental car we could find. And apparently Hertz â didn't it available it was supposed to be an alien. Well no, what happened is they didn't have it available. Okay. They're like, well, it should be back around 10. Yeah. Well, you should get out of here by nine. What are you gonna do? So Mike and I go in, we were staying at the the f flamingo we walk over to the casino that's right beside it where the the big wheel that â wheel that goes around is over. And we go into that casino and there's nobody in there. It's eight thirty in the morning, and we're the only two in there. And I have this theory that I go to the to the high roller slot machine by the door. Cause that's the one that's gonna hit. Because I in my my grandfather's theory was that's the one that's gonna attract other people to come in. So it so it was a high roller, I put in twenty dollars and I hit max bet. And it played all nine lines. Yeah. The only time you could hit the big jackpot is hitting the ninth line. Okay. And I hit fellow twenty thousand dollars. not income if you spend it all, right? Exactly. the pit boss comes over, he's like, I've never seen this, you know? And â he's Well, how do you want it? I'm like, cause we weren't staying there. Straight cash, homie. I I said, Yeah, â I'll take it in cash. He's like Okay. he comes over and starts counting out bills. And then I'm thinking, wait, how am I gonna carry this around? Brown bag it. What am I gonna do? so and I decide we're gonna go get a cup of coffee. And I said, but we're waiting on this car. He's like, I and then â let's see what other cars are available. There we go. So we ended up â renting 2010 Ferrari California dunge GT. â that was our convertible for the day and going out and seeing the sights around Vegas. We shot automatic weapons. â had it's first time trying Pappy twenty three. We some really good cigars â at cigar bar. We were trying all the papys. paid for all of our trip together. Both got Rolexes. No, I didn't do that. Ended up coming home with some money and You never saw it again. Never saw it again. that was a great trip. That's yeah, that's a hella good story. Had a like a 40 ounce steak at this some â the beaten path. They were like, you need to go to this steakhouse. Yep. And it you show up and it's in the bad part of Vegas, but there's just one light, it's like a speakeasy, and you go in. Holy cow. Dive bars are the best. One of those big things that come out of Tomahawk. Tomahawk. Yeah. so good. That's what down for. Yeah. So I I I think we should. I â It's for science. Yeah. Hmm. right. Well thank you. I like it. Yeah, thank you. I think that's a good one. I like the aftertaste on that five grain now little more. Yeah. And it holds. I think it's I think it's â settling down on the glass a little. They both have that strange strange, different different is the right word, not strange. The strange 'cause it is different. It's I don't know what it is. I don't know if it's hazelnut. Like it's Yeah, there's something something. Go figure. Yeah. Getting a little more corn on the foregrain. Yeah. But yeah, both of them are really good. Happy with that. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah, thank you. please like and subscribe. This is episode sixty seven. Never gonna get old. Can we do all episodes exam? So I noticed the kids, the kids don't do it anymore because I started doing it back to them. â yeah, totally uncool now. Yeah. Yeah. thanks for watching.
