Dan: Good evening. Welcome back to Bourbon, Brass, and Beyond. tonight we have gone to the Eagle Rare 10 year store pick. I'm joined by Alex in Louisville, Alex Derthick. And he's got his own Eagle Rare 10 year store pick, and I have one that I picked up. good evening. Yeah.

 

Alex: Well thanks for having me, Dan. Good evening. good to see you again.

 

Dan: Good to see you.

 

Alex: I've actually been wanting to open this bottle, so I should be I'm excited to taste it. I don't remember what it tasted. I had two of that was a decade ago, I don't remember what it tastes like, so

 

Dan: Well, no time like the present.

 

Alex: Someone just told me the other day they said, be where your feet are. I like that.

 

Dan: I like that. That's like a Ted Lasso.

 

Alex: Yeah, yeah. Dude I fly with I'm in a fantasy football league.

 

Dan: There's mine.

 

Alex: Beautiful. So that's new. Is that from a store near you?

 

Dan: n this is from Crescent Springs Tobacco. It's on Buttermilk

 

Alex: Okay.

 

Dan: Parkway just south of Cincinnati in Kentucky.

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: So when I was doing sim down in Cincinnati, this would be the place that I would stop when I was getting ready to come home.

 

Alex: Do the old Preston Van Winkle tasting here. yeah. It needs to breathe a little bit, but so mine's from Beverage Warehouse, a pretty notorious store here in the Louisville that closed down because when Total Wine came into town a decade ago, they really just gobbled up all the volume and market. But anyways, this this'll this'll set people back. This is how much this costs in twenty fifteen. Thirty

Alex: six Ninety nine. Can't get that now. So yeah,

 

Dan: Nice. No.

 

Alex: that says down here that you can't see the label. Let's see if I can hold it up here. It actually says aged eleven years. So even despite the ten year age statement on the back. But we'll see how it tastes. Mm. Man, is that good? God, that's freaking phenomenal. It's one of my all time favorite drinkers is Eagle Rare. I I got a ton of as you saw, but It's

 

Dan: Now what's interesting is I I've always said that this is the best value per dollar Where else can you get a ten year bourbon or eleven

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: year in yours for forty bucks?

 

Alex: Nowhere. That's quality. I mean I wish it was a little higher proof like we've talked about, but I I mean ninety proof is probably the the right proofing for that. I'd like to see it at a hundred, but you know. I think that's probably right where it should be. But I mean the juices. Mashbill one, man.

 

Dan: Mashbill one.

 

Alex: Need to go get some God

 

Dan: Mm.

 

Alex: man, that is good. Damn is that good. Smooth. Very smooth. Lots of vanilla.

 

Dan: So I do like I do like the store picks better than a than just a straight Eagle Rare ten. I I

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: that At least the ones that I've had. I've had a couple.

 

Alex: Yeah, the color is great on it. What you'd want to see from ten year the nose. The nose is good. I gotta yeah, I'm I'm terrible also at like expressing what do I smell when I smell like old licorice or leather or baseball gloves. I'm like, how do you all how y'all how do people get that? But people do. I just more or less

 

Dan: So I I I think I've gotten a lot better at it. I th I think at first I was really struggling to to find the sense, but I think over time, they just start coming to me. 'Cause I it's like you're training your senses to recognize, you know, certain

 

Alex: Buy that.

 

Dan: things.

 

Alex: man. You can taste a little bit of that rye.

 

Dan: So I do get the caramel.

 

Alex: Mm.

 

Dan: Yeah. I do get the caramel. I do get the a little bit of the fruits. And I I've always said it's things that have a little bit of rye in it. I get like a like a an orange marmalade or some sort of like a a fruit.

 

Alex: Absolutely in that. I did I get a ton of orange. it's very it feels very if you were a wine person, right? You'd say fruit forward. fruit forward, a lot of vanilla. I get a ton of vanilla, a ton of caramel. then it it finishes like with this orangey like this tint of like just a hint of orange. And and it's smooth, there's no bite to it. There's it's properly aged, it's right, man. a ten, twelve year bourbon, I think, up to fifteen is right is the perfect spot. And this just this just hits, man. It hits every time. And I mean I yeah. I big big fan. I s actually started drinking this stuff back when I was in college. That was like my go to bottle,

 

Dan: Nice.

 

Alex: like, if I wanted like a a nice bottle of bourbon to like enjoy That was it. I was still young. Probably did shots of it. Probably

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: probably did that, but did no did know what I had on my hands, how to appreciate that, but you know you live and you learn. But yeah, it's phenomenal.

 

Dan: So my first bottle of Eagle Rare I picked up in Chippewa, Pennsylvania, coming home from the airport. I wanna say it was in the two thousands,

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: late two thousands. And it was just sitting there, you know, on the shelf. No allocation.

 

Alex: Would you no.

 

Dan: Probably I I don't remember what I paid, but I I think it was probably

 

Alex: Probably thirty bucks.

 

Dan: yeah.

 

Alex: Isn't that crazy?

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: It blows my mind.

 

Dan: And I think they're just they're just like with tax forty five bucks now in Ohio. So they're like f forty, forty something.

 

Alex: even know what they were from the last few that I've gotten. They're through that bourbon club I belonged to and there's another one I got. We did a it was a pretty cool store. We did a picket event up in New York City and I did all the the logistics for it. The restaurant actually gave me a they had their own barrel. They gave me two bottles of it.

 

Dan: Nice.

 

Alex: So I've got one of those out there for some restaurant in New York we did this at that they partnered up with, so I got one of those. I'm excited to probably try that one since our contract's finally done. A decade later it feels like, but kind of excited for that one. But man, I've I've been wanting to open up this one for a while. I've kind of forgotten about it. It's been on the back burner. 'cause just 'cause it's an eleven year versus a ten and it's a store pick, so it's even got double of the double thing going for it. And that's an older bottle. beverage warehouse closed down in twenty fifteen. So I'm guessing the twenty fourteen, twenty fifteen bottling somewhere in there. I have I c I tried to find the laser coat, I I couldn't find it. Everyone's gonna be like, You should find the laser coat I'm like, Yeah, I I look pretty hard for like thirty minutes. That's what I was doing.

 

Dan: Well, when you're approaching forty it gets harder to see the laser code.

 

Alex: I can see pretty good still. You know, I just did my meta quest, like got twenty twenty fifteen or whatever I got vision.

 

Dan: So I'm now noticing

 

Alex: The man

 

Dan: it when I'm now noticing it when like the light starts to change, you know,

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: for the close up. So

 

Alex: Man, that's just Mmm. Man, is that good juice? And that's This is a great idea to do this tonight. Phenomenal idea. Now you got me to open this thing up. Thirty six ninety nine. I mean, that's crazy. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, the cornerstone of the birth of a nation. Yeah.

 

Dan: Well and it's a good it's a good day to open these up. It's it's you know, National Bourbon Heritage Month.

 

Alex: It's like every month for me, but yeah.

 

Dan: Well, I I I I'd have to say we celebrate it all the time.

 

Alex: Y yeah, you should celebrate it every day. I actually had some What did I have earlier today? I don't even know what I I think I had s well or someone bored me. I was like, thanks. My very expensive babysitter took my kids for the four hours. So it was good.

 

Dan: Yeah. Mm.

 

Alex: Man, is that phenomenal, man? Holy smokes. I I forgot how good that was. I didn't even know what I had on my hands. That might be one of my favorite bottles I've got now.

 

Dan: And I love once you start having it's like that third sip, the flavors start to layer. on your tongue. And I feel like that's the best for most bourbons, that's the best one.

 

Alex: This bottle could breathe for a minute, it could use it. been s cooped up in storage for a decade. I was just glad the cork did disinerate with how hot it's been.

 

Dan: I've had a few. I've had a few go. I mean, they're normally the older, older dusty bottles, but They say that it's thirty to forty years or all that a cork's gonna last for on a bourbon bottle.

 

Alex: I try to that seventeen that you opened that we actually had the cork disintegrate, the Eagle Rare, I try to tip upside down and at least lu lube up. And I try

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: to twist around a little bit to get the get the juices flowing, you know. Sometimes, you know, you you just gotta you gotta you gotta play with it, twist it around, do some things, and then she's ready to go.

 

Dan: That's right.

 

Alex: Yeah, you know.

 

Dan: that's good.

 

Alex: That is phenomenal. I'm Lead a rare life. It's on the the hang tag here. So you it's all

 

Dan: Got a hang tag. Mm. So I do really like that.

 

Alex: The only man. Like like is an understatement. I mean I I really wish I could give everybody a pour of this thing. This thing is You know how much I love my Eagle seventeens and this is up there. This is really good stuff. I don't know who picked this barrel but they knew what they were doing. There was a guy named Owen, like in one of the Facebook groups, man. Like but back in the day, there used to be so many Facebook groups. There used to be like megaballs and powerballs and like all these different things and like it was it was fun, man. Like it was a great way to lose some money in a hurry, but

 

Dan: Ha ha ha.

 

Alex: And Facebook shut him down, unfortunately, which you know, I got my own personal feelings on that one. But there's this guy named Owen, I remember that, and he was like a manager or worked at the store or something, and he was like, We got these bottles in, you want one? And I was like, I want like four and he's like, You can only have two and I was like, Alright, I'll take two but I drank the other one clearly.

 

Dan: Mm-hmm.

 

Alex: But this thing this thing hits, man, this thing is I'm about to say some of those for you the next time I see you. This is great.

 

Dan: This is awesome. Yeah.

 

Alex: man, you know?

 

Dan: So the the twelve year is ninety It's ninety five proof.

 

Alex: Is it? I don't have a twelve year in I should probably acquire one of those.

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: I just to be honest, I haven't even looked for one.

 

Dan: Well, if you come up, you can just try this.

 

Alex: Yeah, but I want my own.

 

Dan: True.

 

Alex: We can go we can like make a pearl circle. I g I even got that I showed you that picture of that one point seven five Eagle Rare. That thing

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: is huge. It's so big. I bought it. It's not a store pig, it's just a regular Eagle Rare. But it's just so ridiculously large I had to buy it. I was like, this is stupid. This is so dumb.

 

Dan: Yeah, but you think about it. You know, when we were at the Van Winkles, those one gallon bottles that they had, you know, that's

 

Alex: Yeah. I know.

 

Dan: that's the equivalent.

 

Alex: Yeah. One point yeah. And it's huge. It's like I d the size the picture does not do it justice. Man, I get that's what she said, but like it's it's big. It j and it's in a cognac style bottle, so it just looks ridiculous. Like it's not like it's not like a different shape bottle to make it more it's just a bigger version.

 

Dan: You need to get a you need to get a a rotate thing for it.

 

Alex: I just need to drink it. How about that? Yeah, I mean

 

Dan: That too. I have I have a half gallon of old granddad.

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: That that I haven't cracked. It's from nineteen seventy six.

 

Alex: Okay. You've got some dusty

 

Dan: And

 

Alex: dusties.

 

Dan: I do. I do. I I've got a a a few. I've got that. I've got a seventy-five old granddad. I've got an eighty one old granddad one fourteen. I've got a fifty eight James Beam. Nineteen forty four old crow. I have a little left of the nineteen sixty eight Old Fitzgerald. You got to have the last little bit of my nineteen seventy very old Fitzgerald.

 

Alex: Dude, that might have been the best shit I've ever tasted. I don't know what I owe you for that, but I mean send me a Venmo request.

 

Dan: man, isn't I just No. That that well the the whole point is I I'm glad that you got to experience it. Cause it's never gonna exist again. You know, it's like unless you go

 

Alex: That is that's so sad to me because it's like a baby. You carry this thing around and all of a sudden it dies. And it's like, what do I do with this now?

 

Dan: Well, I've got it upstairs on the empty bottle shelf.

 

Alex: What what blends do you have? Speaking of I mean that's that's mashable too, but like what blends do you have up there? You've got

 

Dan: I have a couple of the derby bottles. I've got a regular Blantons and then I have a straight from the barrel.

 

Alex: Derby bottle blend with the

 

Dan: Yeah, the there were the three seventy fives that were the barrel select. They were the Sazerac barrel select. And I

 

Alex: Okay, okay, okay.

 

Dan: and I did open one and I mean it it's it's pretty good. I I really liked it.

 

Alex: Is it barrel proof or what is it?

 

Dan: No, standby

 

Alex: That's a that's what we gotta do. We gotta do a blends. We gotta go around I gotta get you some from Japan. Next time I'm there I need to send you a text. What is that guy? Keeping up a little guy.

 

Dan: So it's ninety three proof.

 

Alex: is this standard? So they're standard juice. Okay.

 

Dan: But it is p part of the Sazerac barrel select.

 

Alex: They did they wanted them in three seven fives. How is it? Damn is that shit good.

 

Dan: It's it's really good.

 

Alex: So That's kinda my pride and joy is my bland set is all the green, black, red, Japanese red, straight from the barrel, gold, L V W, straight, whatever the crap is over here. Yeah.

 

Dan: See, I think those are the best. I I I I I think that the regular Blantons has gotten younger and younger.

 

Alex: Mm-hmm.

 

Dan: And now to get the the the quality that you you want when you get a Blanton's that you have to go to either the straight from the barrel or some of those international ones.

 

Alex: Yep. I haven't I mean I've opened a bunch of my golds. I've probably got four or five of I I I l I need to. Next time I'm over there, I'll send you a text. I'll just bring between you and me and the fence post I'll bring some some back. I only bring two. I can only bring two back, so I I will only bring two back.

 

Dan: Okay.

 

Alex: Agreed.

Alex: Like why? Like why d why? It's such a silly thing. Like, you know, the the crazy thing is, man, like You leave this country, you go overseas, and like the taboo on alcohol is like nothing. It's No one gets carded. But and yeah. And they're very still productive members of society, but you know. I get it. I get the drawback, trust me, but funny. We c we could also do a really good tailor episode. I mean I've got some tailors too. And you've got some and you got that old that old one.

 

Dan: You have to try that old. That is worth it. That is that is worth the drive up here just to try that one.

Dan: I I do have some Elijah Craigs, and I just picked up a barrel proof. From being down there. I did the bottle your own, where it's just a extremely small batch of ten barrels. Every time you do the bottle your own, the private tasting in the bottle your own bottle, it's from only ten barrels that they've selected and batched

Alex: I've never done that to her.

 

Dan: So I picked that one 'cause I thought that's the one where you could buy an allocated bottle at the end. It's not. It was the wrong one.

Dan: You have to do the w you have to do the whiskey connoisseur tour in order to buy an allocated bottle at the end. So I wanted

 

Alex: Mm.

 

Dan: to get an Elijah Craig twenty one.

 

Alex: Mm. That's the one I'm missing.

 

Dan: 'Cause I have the fifteen, I have the yeah, I have the fifteen, I have the eighteen, and then they just came out with a twenty one. So that's the one I wanted. So I I went on Reddit, I was trying to look it up, and they said if you do this tour, then you can buy an allocated bottle. Well, I picked the wrong.

 

Alex: Chucky Darren. Sounds like he'll have to come back.

 

Dan: I think so. So I'm thinking for bourbon bourbon and beyond. I'll be down there for that. I'm thinking about doing a bottle share. Yeah, I'm thinking about doing

Alex: What is what are those I've been wanting to know this on the other day, like on your bottom shelf down there by the step stool, what are those yellow labels? I've never seen that.

 

Dan: Fry Ranch.

 

Alex: Huh. What's that from? Is that is that bourbon or is it Kentucky bourbon or huh? Is it good?

 

Dan: That's that that's out of Nevada. Well, it it's it's out of Nevada. And it's grained glass, so it's all from their farm. And the one's a four the one is a four grain, the other one is a five grain. And you know what? They were good. Yeah. Oat

 

Alex: I've grain. The hell the the hell they put for the fifth grain.

 

Dan: oat is oat.

 

Alex: Oat. Have you had it? Have you tried it?

 

Dan: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's d it's decent. Yeah, I i it

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: is. It's it's it's it's good. Would it be something that

 

Alex: Underaged or properly?

 

Dan: No, I'd say they're properly aged. It's it's not an old let's see. I don't know that it has an age statement. It is non chill filtered, straight bourbon whiskey. Distilled from f five slow grain slow grown grains.

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: this is a single barrel. It's

 

Alex: Single barrel.

 

Dan: one hundred and twenty five point seven proof. This bottle here was an Ohio exclusive barrel pick. And Bottle number ninety-seven out of barrel number twenty-zero five one nine. So from twenty twenty. So this was six years old. Yeah. It's worth trying.

 

Alex: And how is it? Did you have it out there or do you have it when you got back? I mean everything's worth trying.

 

Dan: No, I had it here.

 

Alex: the at the table.

 

Dan: No, I I I tried it here when I got home. Yeah. We did we did a podcast on it.

Dan: That was the gate w the one that they just so they just started revamping the terminal a couple of years ago and they tore

Dan: all the gate signs down and then somebody listed them on Facebook Marketplace. So I got Bravo I got Bravo thirty two because I used to be in and out of that gate like every day. And I got Alpha eleven.

 

Alex: Alpha eleven. Where's the Alpha eleven?

 

Dan: It's in my office.

Dan: So so this So Steph texted me, like, hey, there's this an auction in in Pennsylvania. I'm like, okay. And she goes, and there's a lot of airplane stuff. And here, the guy's name was James Kirk, who retired as a captain from Delta.

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: He was a former he was he was original Northwest twenty year whale guy. And he had a lot of aviation stuff that he was auctioning off. including I'm gonna try to do this, including This six and a half foot wide

 

Alex: Seven three.

 

Dan: US Airways seven thirty seven. That was the s it was the

 

Alex: The most ridiculous thing I've seen in a while. That's so big. People don't understand how big that is. That takes up so much room.

 

Dan: Yeah, it w it was the centerpiece of the US Airways ticket counter at the Pittsburgh International Airport until nineteen ninety four.

 

Alex: Where did you f you got that from the Delta guy?

 

Dan: Yeah. Cause somehow

 

Alex: I love

 

Dan: he got it off of a gate agent. In down there. I don't know.

 

Alex: Too much too eagle rare dam.

 

Dan: Yeah, that's the back bar, that's the downstairs bar.

 

Alex: Yeah, I like it. I like your setup. You just got a great setup, man. Kudos to you. Proud of you. So I'll think this started off a long time

 

Dan: So the reason I have this

 

Alex: ago with Blanton seventeen ninety or with Seventeen ninety two pauper.

Dan: So the reason for the wall behind me is because when we moved into this house, we had to repair a lot of stuff. And it was actually this whole area was sagging about two inches.

Dan: underneath. Yeah, we had we we had jack up the the foundation off of the foundation under this and then put two more posts in. And the guy that we had do it. his name's Lenny Glavin and he's just a phenomenal contractor. He's like, I can match all that woodwork to your bar. Like, okay. So he puts the posts in. I'm like, well, if we're gonna have posts there anyway, we might as well have shelving for some bottles.

Dan: He's like, yeah, I can do that. So he put all these in. And it's just yeah. This has been the

Preston, you didn't hear this, but I like this better than the the Pappy lineup. But it's a different mash bill and a different pr proof point. But I'd put this right up there with the fifteen year. And my this thing is freaking

Dan: My favorite thing about this bottle is that you don't get a lot of ryes to me start to turn to bitter on the aftertaste, on that back end, on the back of the palate. And

Alex: I I you also get that over peppered flavor.

Alex: A lot of r a lot of rye are like I feel like I'm just taking a thing of black pepper and just eating it. I'm like, I get it as spicy, it's fun. Like I like spicy food too, but I need a more balanced bourbon, in my opinion.

 

Dan: Yeah. So to me the twelve year is just a little bit sweeter and you have a little bit more of a mouthfeel. So it's got a little bit more viscous. And that could be just the proof, but so my the twelve has been my favorite so far of the Eagle Rares.

 

Alex: Yeah, just

 

Dan: Course yours being eleven, it might be, you know, closer to yours than it is than to the ten.

 

Alex: I can't imagine that Buffalo Trace changed a whole lot of I mean it's the same still, right? Same everything in the last ten years, so well I guess this would have been twenty years ago. Twenty one years ago. So yeah, it's still the same still, but I can't imagine a whole lot's changed since then. But

 

Dan: Well, they've expanded like four times since then.

 

Alex: Yeah, but the still and all the stuff is the same. Yeah, I just I just love seeing the thirty six ninety nine sticker and then because that doesn't exist in today's society.

 

Dan: One of the dusty bottles that I got from the early eighties had a seven dollar price tag on

 

Alex: man. There was a speaking of like going back in time, there was this TikTok I was watching about right before you texted me. This girlfriend, she was like rage baiting her boyfriend about the cowboys being so bad. She's like, I wish gas would go down to a dollar. He'd be like, What? It's never gonna do that. Dan: So I have not I mean I've had Rock Hill and I think we did we actually did an episode where Bob brought over a Rock Hill, but that was probably six months ago. And now I have.

 

Alex: And that is. So I've got a bunch of I've still got a case left. But that's my that's my guy. That's my jam. That's my favorite. I used to be my daily drinker. It's a Rock Hill Farm. And going for three hundred dollars on the secondary market now for a bottle. I mean I used to buy that stuff for back in the day for fifty-five dollars a bottle.

Alex: You can't find it now. I used to about by the caseload.

 

Dan: So so what's the difference we what's the difference between the Hancock's Reserve and the Rock Hill Farms? 'Cause the Hancock's Reserve, President's Choice, or whatever it's called, is the same mash bill. It's mash bill number two. their mash bill number two, they have a higher rye content than mash bill number one.

Alex: I d I don't to be honest, I don't know. 'Cause it sure is the same thing as Blend and MRT Lee as well, if I remember right. I'm gonna look this

Dan: Elmer T. Lee is 90 proof. Rock Hill Farms is 100 proof. And Hancock Reserve single barrel is 88.9 proof. But that this one is a Sazerac barrel select. Rock Hill Farms is a single barrel. Counterproof.

 

Alex: They're they're I mean they're all they're both Mashville one and Mashbell two are both ryes. One obviously two has a higher, slightly higher rye content. I I to be honest, I don't know. I mean from the coloring I would say Rock Hill Foams probably aged slightly longer, but it just could be the decanter and the way the lights shining through it. But I mean they The Pappy and Weller put is a wheated mash bill, right? So that's mash bill three that no one talks about, but

 

Dan: I think they just call it the ma the the wheated mash bill.

Dan: 'Cause then there's the stri 'cause then there's the straight Rye Mash bill as well.

 

Alex: Correct. But Mashville One and Mashville Two, those are their two main jams, right? Like so Stag is Mashville One and all that. And then it's a little bit less complex in its notes, but I haven't had a Hancock's in a while, to be honest. It's great juice, but I just to be honest, man, I just I love the Rock Hill. I love the decanter. it It freaking it hits every time and The decanter's

And like the sad part is like this is a one of one. I ain't there they ain't gonna make another one of these. This is done after this. That's why I was trying to like buy a backup. Like, damn, I hardly like that. Like I want I want that again. See how warm this thing is. It's not bad too. It's been so freaking hot here. Maybe doing recess inside of my kids' school.

There's no No particulate in the in the bottle. had some bottles, man, they like all sorts of just some are not really filtered at all. You get a bunch of char, which is I kinda like it's kinda fun.

Alex: my goodness. it's got just enough spice with the rye, it's got the balance, it's got the proper aging, the proper proof. That's what a single barrel whiskey should be. Right there. That is every that's the standard in my opinion. There is no other

Alex: standard. I know that Bland's is his own thing. That wins every time. Blanton's gold sometimes can hit it like that, but Blanton's is sometimes inconsistent 'cause of the volume they pump out, but Th this is better in every way. I mean you can tell from the oil from the barrel when you like you tilt the thing around you can see the striations in the top of the glass. Yeah. This this is it. This this is my guy. This is my rider die. And back in the day, man, it was fifty fifty it's the same price as bland fifty bucks. And I was like, Yeah, I turned everybody on to it and I really wish I would have not opened my mouth. Like what's your favorite bourbon? I was like, Rockville Farms. They're like, Why? I was like, This is better. It's it's unapproved. To age product, probably a seven, eight year age, if I were to guess. For a single barrel, that seems about right. The coloring on it, not to pour something better for it to get bad better coloring, but the coloring Suggest that, but

Alex: Yeah, that's probably a seven year bourbon if I were to guess. I bet weather antique looks exactly like the

 

Dan: Doctor Google says that it is estimated to be aged between eight and ten years.

 

Alex: Yeah, I've I've been educated today. I mean that that tracks. I'm attracted by the flavor profile is what it is, right? Because the rye is not overpowering. younger bourbons, I feel like the rye just dominates the nose, dominates the palate. And I get that, right? You're trying to pump product out, use a heavy rye build, you can get more juice out faster. You can hide that methanol and ethanol and then that rye. I get all that, right? It's spicy, it's hot. Like you're more of a man, but I'm like, man, I want I want the I want all the flavor profile. I want the full spectrum a balanced quality bourbon and that's my opinion, th this is their best product, in my opinion. I'd rather have this over I d the only thing I all the in the Pappy lineup, I'd rather actually have a fifteen over this just 'cause I don't have one. 'Cause I've drank it, but I'd I'd rather I'd take this over a watt B or a twenty and everyone's like, You're crazy. I'm like I look at value and affordability and I could buy two or three bottles of this, if not more, for a twenty. I'm like, this is great juice. I don't know, I always try to find value and especially as like a collector who like actually drinks his product.

 

Dan: You have to. You you have to look at value. I mean there of course there are times when you're like, all right, this is something I definitely want. But for the most part, I I like the value part of it as well. I mean, like when we started hanging out, what was I drinking?

 

Alex: JW Dant. You and I've never touched it. And to be honest,

Alex: just not I'm not gonna allow that. you know, so I'm like, hey, if you wanna play that game, like I've got some other shit you can mix up, you know. Even though Derby is all

Alex: inclusive, I used to back in the day, man, I used to sneak in bourbon because Derby back in the day when I started going like twenty years ago was not all inclusive. It was, you know, mm by the drink, by the meal, whatever. Like a a traditional sporting event. So I used to take in I actually still got one of them up there. I still did it just for old time purposes. I don't know why, just to keep the tradition going. get like a little plastic, you know, three seven five of Old Forester or whatever and just tuck it in your waistband, continue on without your day and That's kinda how I how I view you know, what what are you doing with stuff? You're gonna mix it, man, I don't you don't once you once you start adding

Alex: sugar sugar and flavor and you can't you can't taste the vanilla and caramel and the the appreciation to the effort that the distiller put into that product.

I'm like Pappy Van Winkle could sell their bottles for five thousand dollars a frickin' bottle all day long and twice on Sunday and not have a problem. But they don't. They're doing that because they want the average consumer to enjoy a great product. And they've got a great product. This this ain't selling for three hundred dollars because Buffalo Trace could sell it for four hundred dollars a bottle and people would buy it. I'm I'm one of them.

Alex: dude it's Yeah. So my my great grandmother is one of my favorite things she ever had. She always told me, she says The two most beautiful things in the world you'll appreciate everyone will appreciate this one is a woman's body, naked, and a horse.

Dan: Absolutely. One hundred percent class act, down to earth, just knowledgeable and understanding. I yeah. And I d I know you haven't met Wally yet. Maybe we'll do that next time we're down there, but Wally Dant from Log Still Distillery is the same way. You know, JW Wally Dant of the JW

 

Alex: Most of those guys are.

 

Dan: Dant family.

 

Alex: Like I knew Jim Rutledge pretty well, I knew Brent Elliott pretty well. I knew a bunch of the Master Distillers and like Most of those dudes like they cut their teeth on some stuff and they their heart and passion is just in creating product that's really good and that's phenomenal. And while I understand that Preston's not a distiller, quote unquote, but he's still in charge of tasting barrels, like right? Like we just I don't know if the last podcast meant to cut, but I they just talked about That was the first one of the first years they've never rejected a barrel from Buffalo Trace. And that's astounding. I mean, you're talking for the old Rip Van Winkles, I I guarantee you that's several hundred barrels. And then you're talking the lot B probably the same thing. Probably for the fifteen, it's probably still up there. And then as you get more into the age product, there's probably only there's less than less, right? but they never rejected a single freaking barrel. And they do two tastings a year. So that's pretty wild. That's a lot of fucking product. And that place pumps out more bourbon than I could you and me can imagine. People don't realize like their rig houses are full, they're aging stuff and frickin' semi trailers and whatever else they can put it in.

 

Dan: We were down in in July, we did a Weller foolproof barrel pick.

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: And Yeah, it's crazy. And the amount of rick houses they've added and their storage capacity.

 

Alex: They're doing what are they doing? Like a billion dollar expansion or something like that?

 

Dan: For a second time.

 

Alex: Yeah. I mean they they can't make enough. I mean they're they're pumping it out. Jim Beam is shutting down. I mean that should tell you everything in and out.

 

Dan: Yeah. And you know what? There's still lines for their products. Even in Ohio where Buffalo Trace has been like dumping stuff, I mean they've been loading Ohio up with everything. it's still gone. It's still off the shelves within a couple days.

 

Alex: ten year one point two billion dollar expansion. That's a lot of money. That's a More fermenters, additional cookers, Fony new aging warehouses.

 

Dan: Well and then they just bought that other distillery that was in bankruptcy down in Tennessee.

 

Alex: Another they could probably age a lot of food down there.

 

Dan: Yeah, that that was just closed last month. I mean I I saw news about it a couple months ago. I knew they put an offer in, but it was closed. They they got that distillery. So they're they're getting they're getting s rick house space and distilleries on top of this expansion.

 

Alex: They just need to space the age of their product. I mean they they've got a they've got a storage issue on hand. And good. I want I want more of this. And I definitely want older versions of this. They're gonna pump out twelve years, they they've got something else on the market. Did we ever figure out all right, so I don't know what made the podcast, what didn't. So at the Buffalo Trace, they have like a walk in type cooler, right? They've got two bottles

 

Dan: Right.

 

Alex: or two barrels of Pappy in there.

 

Dan: Pappy Van Winkle twenty-three, yes, they're consolidated. So what they did

 

Alex: Yeah.

 

Dan: is they took so they took like five or six barrels and consolidated it into two barrels because at twenty-three

 

Alex: Mm-hmm.

 

Dan: years there's only like twenty-three percent of the juices left.

 

Alex: That makes sense.

 

Dan: So they they consolidated it into two barrels so that they were almost full, and then they put into the cold storage. So they're still aging just at a very, very slow process. So they don't get over oak. That's where that Eagle Rare twenty five and the Eagle Rare thirty came from, that cold storage.

 

Alex: Yeah, I mean the oils just don't come out of the wood as long, in my opinion. Like how cold is that storage? Do you think it's like fifties, you think it's thirties? What you what do you think it is?

 

Dan: I would say I believe he it was like forty-eight to fifty. Because the the the pores close up, he said it's something like forty-two degrees. So it's kept at forty-eight degrees.

 

Alex: Yeah. Interesting. Well I don't have twenty five thousand dollars to spend on a bottle, so that one's probably gonna get punted.

 

Dan: So the OHLQ did a did a a drop and you had to show up and then you know basically an in person lottery in three locations in the state. And there they did have an Eagle Rare thirty and several Eagle Rare twenty fives and a bunch of

 

Alex: Mm.

 

Dan: Eagle Rare twenties.

 

Alex: Wow. Did you

 

Dan: And

 

Alex: get your hand that long?

 

Dan: No. I I mean I I filled out the tag and tried to get one, but the problem being it like There were a couple Eagle Rare twenty fives that lasted until the end

 

Alex: Mm.

 

Dan: because people didn't wanna just 'cause you had to pay MSRP, which for that I believe it was The Eagle Rare twenties was like twenty five hundred or five thousand and then the Eagle Rare twenty five was I believe it was ten thousand.

 

Alex: Damn. That we don't have that kind of coin.

 

Dan: Right. So then at the end there were three Eagle Rare 20s left. so then they were like, all right, high rollers. Anybody that didn't get called that wants to put their name in the hat for an Eagle Rare 20, come back up, and we had to fill out new tickets. And there was like, I I want to say there was 15 to 20 people that did and for three bottles and I did

 

Alex: Mm. Still don't get it.

 

Dan: not get picked.

 

Alex: Fucking sucks.

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: I'm sorry, man.

 

Dan: That's all right. Some day, you know.

 

Alex: So done. Mm. I'm getting kinda tired.

 

Dan: Yeah. Wesley had an appointment for his diabetes, my middle son, at 825 this morning. And then the two the oldest and the youngest boy were supposed to have a a fair performance for the marching band. And then Wesley had football practice, and then I had to bring him home and cook dinner and so and now

 

Alex: Yep.

 

Dan: The US opens on for tennis. So Steph is up watching tennis and I'm gonna go up and see who won for the day and then

 

Alex: didn't win.

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: Yeah, but option six, feel that. Every day. School. Kinda love it.

 

Dan: you got you guys started school already. So we don't we don't start school until after Labor Day 'cause we're where the kids go, it's a rural area.

 

Alex: They're normal.

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: Yeah, no,

Alex: we're in school. We've been in school for friggin' weeks, man. It's like they've already been in school for a month, it feels like. Yeah. This was good.

Alex: It's Rock Hill Farms. Eleven year age, eagle rare. It's on the label for everyone who wants

 

Dan: Yeah.

 

Alex: to hate. It's eleven years. I don't know. There's not a laser code on
