Van Winkle Rye, Oak & Age, Commander's Club, Birthday Bourbon, & Caleb's Crossing; Ep. 74

Dan, Nick, and Chase: Good evening. Welcome back to Bourbon Brass and Beyond. it's gonna be a fun night. Welcome back, Nick. And Chase is joining us for Chase's birthday. First time are we doing? Yeah. Long overdue. So we're gonna go, we're gonna go gentle, I think. he was wanting to try the Caleb's crossing. Yep. So we're gonna go ahead and I'll give you a first pour out of this. You guys have already Warmed up a little. A little bit. A little bit, yeah. I have not. This is the first pour today. Thank you, sir. Thank you. Yes, sir. So Caleb's Crossing. This is David Jennings brand. He Rarebird one one. It is a 12-year 95-5 rye from Nickters as the base with a Green River seven-year bourbon on top as the blend. So most blends have the bourbon as the base. Sure. But this is the opposite. And you get that that rye as the predominant for sure. We've both had this This is one and I you were looking forward to and yeah. You get a lot of that watching watching Dan's videos, I see all these balls, I was like, they keep talking about the kills crossing and I love rye. So you've made quite the dent in this bottle already, too. And we we have Well, we got two more on the way. Yeah, so we like I said right before we started, Chase mentioned, I really wanna try that one. And I'm like, man, Dan and I did it the one day. It's so good. If you want a bottle, let's let's get one. I'll get one too, because I that's one I need to have as well. So and it's such a great it's such a great whiskey. I mean it really is. So this is BBR2, it's bottle 392 of 658, One fifteen point two approved. And it's such a I love the nose on this. The nose is awesome. The nose I think that's favorite part. The nose is so good. You can really tell it's heavily into that twelve year rye. Great legs. The the finish is just it just kinda goes too. Yeah. Yeah, that that tingle that just goes on. That's really good. Solid pickup there. Yeah. it's as good as I remember it from last time trying it. Glad that we both got one on the way. Yeah. We saved a little bit of shipping cost. Well no, hey. You what? If we just if I get one and you get one. After a couple pours, everything's out. Yeah. Yeah. Or actually I think it was more like he said, he's like, Well, if you get one, I'll get one. Yeah. Pretty much what it was. Yeah. Sealbox recently had. So the blend is just straight bourbon or no no different bourbons blended or the the Green River bourbon with a ninety five five twelve year rye. is what we're drinking. Yeah. Sealbox recently had like the blend and then they had the I think there's a straight rye whiskey as well. I think there's one that's just coming out. Yeah. I think that was the one maybe that Sealbox had recently. So I was like, I haven't tried that one yet, but I know I tried the the blend and it's fantastic. So I'm like, you know what? Sealbox just sold out, but I'm pretty sure Bourbon Outfitter is another one of David's distributors, I guess. For lack of a better term. And Yeah, you know, you go onto the website and it's like, hurry, only two bottles left. And I'm like, Let me see if I can add three to the cart. And it couldn't. So I think we got the I think we might have got the last two. It's It's worth it. Yeah. That's really really good. I like that a lot. The nose it's it's so good. The nose went initially I got grape Kool-Aid, but I don't get it now, but now I get all that rye spice. Yeah, you kinda get a little bit of that rye spice on the See initially I didn't, but after I I took a sip, now I do. I get a little bit of rise spice in the middle. And then there's kind of just a nice little I love that just What's the proof one? 115.2. Okay. That's a great point to be at too. That you know one one of the right right around that one ten mark is money. You know, wild turkey rare breed was always just one you have to have for me personally on the shelf, and it's always right around that one sixteen. I love that that mid teens kind of mark. Yeah, can't can't go wrong. Rare breed. So I think we have to do this next, proof-wise. Makes sense. So for Chase's birthday, we're gonna do the Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye. This this is one I've wanted to try for a long while. So I have to have enough left for a couple weeks. I'm going down. you you probably don't know that. Well, no, no, no, no, no. I thought the twenty-three I knew you just well I'm doing that, I'm taking all of them. We're we're gonna we're gonna Is this where you're interviewing Julian? Preston Van Winkle. Okay. Yep. Yep. And we're gonna do cigars and that's so cool. I mean, I don't know if I'm remembering the date right, but maybe like August wow, that's weird that I remembered that. Yeah. So I just light it, that's so long. I just made reservations for the sixteenth. I'm gonna do a Heaven Hills tour. nice. And then we're staying in Bardstown that night, and then in the morning I'll go over to see to old Rip Van Winkle Distillery's offices. And then We'll do our thing all day. That's cool. Gotta get the condition. So Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye, Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, 13 years old, ninety-five point six proof. And it has the very distinctive Van Winkle nose. But I think that I mean, I'm a weeded guy, but I love this. This is just fantastic. This is a it has a big moment for me. You can definitely tell it's a rye off the nose. Yeah. But it's a very subtle. Kind of have to play with it a little bit. That's a good idea. Yeah. Really? You just kinda have to Dan told me the first time I did one of these. I get these don't worry, we can edit this out in post production. So yeah. Yeah. It's like what do I what do I do with my hands? Whatever you want. That's that's nice. I I get the Buffalo I don't if on these 'cause I've had the fifteen year a couple of times. I roller in my is a nice collection. I don't know if you're supposed to get the Buffalo Trace kind of I get the on the rye. Yeah. I get the I still get the blue grape Yeah, it's just lingered. I actually get more of a grapeiness on this than I I don't really I don't get it as much smell on this now. Yeah, I didn't really get a lot of that grape like you were getting on the Caleb's crossing, but I get it a lot on this. I get a little bit, yeah, kinda more of that grapey nose on the the Van Winkle rye. It's got a really nice palette. That's so subtle. Yeah. And it's got a great mouthfeel. It does. And it that lasting finish that it goes to the it goes from the rye to the sweetness. Yes. And not the opposite. Yes. And I just to me I like the I don't like the pepper. Yeah. So to to me, that is just like that's one of the best parts. Right. Yeah, we've talked about this before of where a lot of the ryes that people think they don't like kind of End with that big peppery bite and it just it's not pushes people away from the rye but Yeah. I get something at the the end of that. I get a little bit of that grape. Like that grape soda or that grape Kool Aid. I get it on the nose. I don't get it as much on the palate. Something. You know, a lot of times I get orange. yeah. Like an orange marmalade. I but I think that it goes to a sweeter Almost like an orange candy. Like the the ones with the sugars on Yeah. Yeah. That candied orange. Thank you. You bet. That's a good one. That is sweet. There's a lot of sweetness for a rye on that. Yeah. Especially on that nose to me. In a in the best way possible. I feel like my nose is better than my palate. Like I could smell things that just don't transfer. But I think that's true for a lot of the bourbons. Yeah. Where I'll get something on the nose and not getting on the get it on the palate. Well yeah, and a lot of differences, right? So we were just drinking we had bunch of turkey. The the Russell's thirteen, the forty fifth, the Eddie Russell, forty fifth. And then we followed that with the J D fourteen batch two. Yeah. And as soon as I smelled the J D fourteen batch two I'm like, dude, what do you Yeah, I'm like, this smells and so it's funny how you can get a lot of the same Or similarities in nosing but then completely different palettes. Yeah. And yeah. 'cause they were like going back and forth. Yeah, so the the palette to the nose is doesn't always match. Right. So I think this one's gonna throw throw you guys for a loop. It really did for me. I'm not a Jim Beam fan, normally. But This one is from we went to last week went down to Louisville. the first day we went to Oaken Age and saw William there. We probably tasted nine different barrels, ten different barrels. I mean it was it was a good time. Steph drove. So naturally. But this one I just kept coming back to. I'm like, and they didn't end up picking. 'Cause they didn't want to pick something 'cause from a a bean product. Mm-hmm. And the the group that I was with. And I I'm like, I have to have a bottle of that. So they went ahead and bottled this bottle for me. Very cool. You got your name on and everything. Handpicked by Dan. That's pretty sweet. It is a hazmat, a hundred and forty three proof. but it does not drink like that. I was a little surprised when you said that because I was like, No, you're not a beam guy. Yeah. And and I'm not a I'm not a proof war either. You know, I'm not looking for that hazmat. Yeah. But this So maybe I I look how dark that. interested to see what you say about the nose. 'Cause you've obviously had this I have a good amount of oak on the nose. Yes. I'm trying to still decide whether I don't know if I got stuff lingering, but I get I get some rye spicing. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, there's there's like a little and that's what I was trying to distinguish. I'm like, is this a little bit of proof? An ethanol that's kind of burning in the nose or maybe a little bit am I getting a little bit of that same kind of rye little bite that you see the the ethanol that does ninety five five it it's like doesn't get me if I take you know take a No, that's and that's what I thought. It it doesn't really seem like a ethanol proofy nose, but in some way it reminds you of kind of like that ninety five five high rye nose, right? Which is But there's There's a little bit of there's a little bit of oaky So this was one of the first bourbons that I got some of the mint or tea notes. I'll get like a green tea. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. And so I might need to I'm gonna steal your sample. just gave you. We'll get it. For this for research purposes. We'll we'll we'll circle back. Do I have one of you 'cause I haven't had it. I'll give you another one. We'll circle back. But on that note Do I have it? No, but I have another one and I'd be interested to see what Dan says that kinda reminds me of those. Yeah. There is a little mintiness there. Yeah. It's like on the you say like the back end of the nose is the mintiness for me. If I get. It's not. So we just had this discussion maybe a little bit with our warm up pores before we we started. Beam, I generally get a lot of that nuttiness in the beam. Yeah. Yeah. I don't get a whole lot of that. No. How do how do you feel about I I On the nose If I think about it, maybe a touch, but if I was going into this blind. Right. Yeah, you didn't know it was being exactly right. if you didn't know it was beam. That was like a brilliant sweet smell in that. This is my favorite part about this whole thing. It's just Yeah. I know I said in our chat, like a lot of people like their art on the wall, but I like mine and a Glen. Yeah. It's like it's Yeah, if you didn't say that was beam You wouldn't And you don't like Beam I know that. I know you're not a big beam guy. And you would never think that's beam. No. 'Cause I gave you the that duck club, the the high brass duck club, which I'm pretty convinced is beam. I wouldn't I wouldn't guess beam on that. No. But that duck club, I would say beam. Yeah, yeah. It it it really has that profile, that what I think, at least what you think, a lot of that nuttiness to it. I don't know if that's why you you particularly don't tend to gravitate towards beam. I think a lot of the people have to realize that a lot of the bourbons in the Bardstown area are all high rye mash bills. Mm-hmm. Not just a little bit, but they're generally higher rye, 'cause that's what Basil Haydn brought from Maryland. He was a high rye mash bill guy. old granddad, the guy on the picture of old granddad is basilhaydon. So that's they were all they they all come from the same cloth so to speak. Sure. and I'm not a rye guy. Now I like JW Dant, I like the old school JW Dant, but I think that it had a heavier char. And that with the the toasted barrel or the log still type I think that char really mellows out the rye for me. Beam generally doesn't have a real high char, so I get more of the rye than I like. Yeah. But I think this one being aged what it is, and the flavor how I mean you just kinda hide that. Yeah, and just how dark it is. I didn't even know that this was beam to begin with. That's really good. And does not drink hazmat. No. I mean even I mean we haven't even talked about that the proof on it. I didn't even think about that. Exactly. The the proof on it is You wouldn't know. You never would would yeah, exactly. I like circle back when I think about the hazmat now because that Penelope we got that one. Yeah. Comparing that what I remember that drinking at. Compared to this. Not even close. Yeah, that that Penelope. I feel like the Pinella P brush cracked, it drank its proof pretty close. A little bit hot. Yeah. Yeah. But this It's even what was it for one point? Yeah, three and I almost proofs. Kind of forgot we're talking about this beam, this nuttiness, this rod. Right. I didn't think about the proof. And then I'm like, wait a minute. You said this was over 140 proof. It doesn't it's nowhere close to palette. Yeah. Yeah. Higher one teens? Right. I I I guessed initially it was like one nine to one fifteen, one eighteen, somewhere in there. That's where that's where it Yeah. That's really good. If you told me low one twenties, I'd believe you'd You're going back down, you said? For in that that barrel again. Yeah, I don't that's really good. Yeah. I mean they still have it available. So now this was a gift shop only type thing, so you really yeah. So it was not it was not selected in the pick, but you were able to get a bottle. Yeah, I said I because you specifically like. Yeah. This bourbon. So that's something they do in particular. Like yeah, I really I have to have that and they'll ball it for you. It's kinda like the That's really cool. The Dark Arts thing. Yeah. Right? Where you know I went I did the Thief from the Barrel That Dark Arts rye, that thirteen and a half year. yeah. Yeah. It's probably one of the best boars I've ever had. Yeah. So I d I did the the Thief from the Barrel at Dark Arts and that's the cool thing is you can Go try and thief from several different barrels and whichever one you like. Was that a thief barrel or was that something that they offered? No, I I picked I went down We're kind of getting away from this, but we do we always do right like we had before. You know how this goes. We we start with one thing and then we end up on twenty different topics and bottles. But that's what makes it interesting. no, I next thing I next thing we know are better halves or Yeah. Putting us to bed or taking us home, one of the two. Yeah, I was like, what the fuck? We've done that before. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. no, I did the thief from the barrel, and the the two that I ended up going home with was that 13 and a half year 955. They won't say it's MGP, but it's probably MGP 955, which was incredible. And incredible poor. The one that I didn't think that I did try was the the one finished in the Armagnac. Which I don't know if you tried that. I think I gave you some of that because we've had some of your owed some of your ode Armagnacs. I'm gonna sound dumb. I don't even know what Armagnac is. Why Armagnac is like a cognac? Like a cognac. Okay. Same different regions of France. Right. So an Armagnac is from the Gascony region of France. Yeah. South southwestern region of France. now, whereas cognac is very commercialized. Right. Armagnacs are all one offs. Okay. They're all from family farms and makes it a little bit more unique. Some are forty, fifty, sixty years old, you know, just 'cause I've seen like the cognacs where you know, you get into you the one you were telling me about with the yeah, I had the Sophia's brother. The Louis the Fourteenth Tesserone lot twenty nine, which is like a Seventy or something like crazy, crazy, crazy age. Two hundred or poor. It was very, very expensive, but I'm like, maybe I do like Konya. Right. Right. Right. but but yeah, no, this would that would be a great time to remind the group and the viewers that You know, maybe Macaulay needs to have us back. So I have we could you know I have an update on this. okay. All right, I'm excited. So Kim Rogers, who is the brand ambassador for Dark Arts, who does she does a lot of the the the tastings and whatnot for Macaulay. she is actually one of our flight attendants. my gosh. And she just won the Ascot Award. Right. you're you're on the other team. The Canadian. The Canadian whiskey team. Right. She is based out of Louisville, and she just got the Ascot Award from Fred Minnick. as the best brand ambassador. my gosh. Really? Yeah. So I I messaged her. I'm like, hey, congrats, Kimmy. You know, but she just messaged me back. We've been going back and forth, so she's gonna Just saying sometimes I do Lexington O. I don't know if I'm I'd be allowed to do anything but I would love to be yeah involved. Well if we have to go down and do it then Somebody has to work. Well, not us. I work for the government. That's right. I'll cancel. Yeah. It's all the same. You'll just have to adjust your time off. Yeah, I got lots of time. Just bill it. Okay, wait. Before we close this out. That's I've honestly never really heard of them. I have a little bit, but that's really good. Yeah, I've seen well when you showed us I think last week when you got back and you sent us a picture in our group that we have and I'm like, I know, I've kinda seen that, but I saw your your name on the bottle and I'm like tell us more, you know. And you know, you see, Name on the bottle. And I like I said, I've I've seen some stuff. I don't really know that much. Those are pretty good back to backs. I do have well let me see wha what are you what are you looking for right now, Dan? What am I looking for? and you mean the for us to try right now? Well yeah, because I know how this goes. You're you're you're taking a peek over your shoulder. What's that old swagger or old swagger? Is that the thirteen year bottom bottom? The rye of that. The twelve year rye. I told you about this months ago and you said don't buy it. So I didn't say don't buy it. You can buy it. I drink yours. but I think No no no the the old swagger twelve year rye has been getting really, really, really good reviews this year. But what I think Chay should try because it caught both of us really off guard is that Commander's Club. yeah. Yeah. This is one that's this is a sleeper. The Grand Cuvet Reserve. Which is a hundred and ten point four two proof. It's bottled by Rare Character Whiskey Company. Yeah. Batch I've never had anything from Rare Character. Batch you you've not had rare okay. So I I've had a lot of stuff, rare characters, not one. that I can remember at least. Well that's a thing, right? I always Sometimes I I know a lot of stuff w you've had that? So I got I kinda pushed Chase into this sickness of whiskey and then he went off the deep end. I kinda took a break and then I'd go over his house, we'd try some things and then now that I'm like back fully fledged into it, I'm like, Hey, do you r do you have now that you're off the wagon? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he's like No, yeah, he's very much on the way. He's Yeah, you had that at my house. And I'm like, I don't I'm like, I just remember giving you Old Forester nineteen twenty and you saying, This is disgusting. Yeah. That that was And I'm like, no, this is this is this is good. I I I promise you, you know, for something you can get off the For the record, Old Forester nineteen twenty is one of my favorite ports at the time now. Probably my brother-in-law getting me into it. Probably not the the best initiation. But anyway. It it's it's Something that you have to kinda gradually get into. I think the nineteen twenty is their double oaked, so I can't I can never remember if nineteen twenty double oaked is the nineteen ten is the nineteen ten, the double yeah, I always get the the ten and the twenty. Nineteen ten, nineteen twenty can't go wrong with the commander's cr club here. So I bought this unknown. Yeah. It was one of the morning drops. We we talked about this the last time. wait, you got this at Chalet. Chalet Chalet. Yeah. Yeah. And it was that big morning drop where every And I didn't get the Heaven Hill twenty two. It was left. Yeah. Yes. We talked about this. I didn't realize. Yes. That's yes. So that happened. Well l let him try it. You probably already watched the the episode where we tried this because you're a loyal I actually do watch all your I know, I know, you're a you're a loyal fan. Which by the way was it I just wanna say though, you gave a shout out to your dad. He didn't give a shout out to me. It's okay. We're gonna give a shout out to Dave right now. Your boys are together. 'Cause he watches. I'm just saying it's your birthday I brought you here. I know. I'm just kidding. No, this was a This is one that you said a lot of people slept on 'cause they didn't realize what it was. Yeah. Yes. Yeah, it was one of those bonus drops and it was CYPB and Heaven Hill twenty two and single barrels and all this other stuff and then there's this thing sitting around. and I knew nothing about it. No. And for something you know nothing about, it's a little bit of a pricey. Yeah, it's a risk. What's what was the MSRP? What was it? One for one forty nine? I I don't re Somewhere around there. Give or take. I don't remember. But wow that note is I would like to say I'll, you know, find the answer and put it on the notes or something, but I'm not I'm not gonna do But I won't do that. But I won't. You should have staff Nobody's got time for that. Staff do the editing and you know, post production and shit. Right can you take care of that for a while? Chat GPT it into the notes, but no, this was I I do remember really liking this when we had it. Yeah. You know, the rare characters are something that I've really shied away from because they've just there got to be so nice many. Right. Exactly. Well, like I I have a rare character that's the the hazmat that I can't even I can't even drink. It just it was so hot. There just got to be so many rare characters usually pretty pricey, right? In mid hundreds. They seem one fifty ish. I feel like I've seen a lot of they do a lot of picks. Like you know, we talk about high proof, right? High proof just had a new one that they did and it's hundred bucks, right? There's a lot of stuff. It seems like a hundred bucks is where it starts. Okay. And then it goes up from there. And there's obviously been a lot of maybe lore around certain picks and so you know, that go for more, but 'cause the line I see that's that's five over there. Yeah. There's so many I forget who from the group had a couple from the other Maybe seven or eight. Calvin maybe had it. Yeah. Calvin had a bunch. Yeah. That's good. Now I see it's batch one, so is it something that they're gonna I do consider? I still don't know. I just remember when we had it the last time I was on a video, we're like, What the heck is grand couve? Yeah, you know, we're like I I don't know if there's batch one, batch two. It's a it's a good Good port. Pablo who from her character they they pick some good barrels and yeah Yeah, I really liked it when we had it the last time I was on episode and I was like, my god, I gotta hurry up and see if there's any more available at OHLQ and they were all gone. But that is that's Grand Cuvet. Couvet. I don't know what Grand Cuvet is but it is. Very it's very cuvet. It's very cuvet. There I would go with. There's a mid palette and a finish. I was gonna say the mid palette, it's like it comes and it's like Yeah, there's something that kicks in like right in the middle and then finish. And I'm trying to figure out and it's for me at the the tail end, talking about nuttiness and like beam, it like wants to say like high, but it it just doesn't. Yeah, you don't you you don't get that bitter finish of the of the nut. Yes. That's really good. And the funny thing is it because everyone with that drop went for the names, obviously. No one knew what that was. And for You mean us? yes. Yes. Hey, I wanted the Jack fourteen and Mike helped me out with that. You did good on that one. Yes. Well 'cause Mike Mike helped me out with getting that and we did a little swapsies, but Yeah, for whatever a hundred and I think it was fifty bucks. And then you can get a I don't know, CYPB or whatever it was if you wanted a name like Weller for sixty bucks. But this I've had CYPB Not on the same level. No, you're right. I mean I I I got the CYPV that day because I got to hang out with your dad. Well yeah, I I my dad got the CYPV for me. You guys all hung out with them. I have to work a lot more than Dan does. But yeah, you know, I needed to do my whole rainbow thing. But yeah, had I known Yeah, that's a That's a really brilliant poor. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Do we have the No age or anything? Do we have an idea? I think I wouldn't You know, I'll let I'll let the younger kids, you know, look it up. Yeah. Yeah. Ask Chad J. Not it's it's diff different pores. But I mean The other three were small. This is all like a high end lineup. Yeah. This is And you're right. But to look at it through a different lens. If you took the Van Winkle rye at MSRP, which is what? Two fifty? I don't know, but way less I can Google that while he chat G V. Certainly certainly less story. Certainly less than what it sells for in the secondary market. Yeah, exactly, right? For me, the Van Winkle rye was actually my favorite pour out of any of these. Because if I eliminate what I perceive it to be worth from knowing the secondary market. Okay. I think that was my favorite pour out of this bunch. Now, on the secondary market is Van Winkle rye worth it i don't know that that's subjective right so that would be everybody has a different w to and you know i don't know but i i and i think that listen if somebody's favorite thing is i is a certain bourbon and they want to spend the money on it so be it right you know i i i have no problem with somebody and i'll never say i can't believe you paid secondary for that's why you want to that's what it's the the Elmar Chile thing People used to pay crazy money for Elmer T. Lee. Yep. And it's like, well, you know Elmer T. Lee was it, seven up or Sprite or what like that's how he drank his his bourbon. So it doesn't matter. Drink what you like, like what you drink, drink it how you like it. Yeah. You wanna put Happy Twenty-three on the rocks, more power to you. If you you know, whatever. It doesn't matter. But So the the MSRP on the Van Winkle Rise two twenty nine. If if I had the opportunity to do that at two twenty nine, absolutely. Absolutely. And you know honestly, I'd probably do it for a little bit more than that. Yeah. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. I was trying to get down to baseline because the Van Winkle Rye is one of the few up here that goes for a good chunk more than what MSRP is, right? And so if you go back down to baseline MSRP, the Van Winkle Rye at a thirteen year product. 220, whatever you said, is that a little bit high even on MSRP? Yeah, maybe so. But it's damn good. Yeah. Yeah. Right? for sure. The Commanders Club, which apparently we're all idiots and we knew nothing about. The first time we had it a while back. Well there's not there's one less idiot. Yeah that that's that's yeah exactly. You are now no longer an idiot. You are now no longer an idiot. You are no longer an idiot. Yeah, that that blew us away too. And even really good. It probably sat for a minute because it was a hundred and fifty bucks or whatever through Ohio, but man, that's a that's a great pour too. So So it should be a one ten point four two it says there. A blend of ten to fifteen year old. Okay. So when you start doing the message. The two was pretty drunk yeah. I haven't had the one to compare it to, but the two was very good. So this is the nineteen eighty three Wild Turkey one one eight year old. Austin Nichols. Austin Nichols. So I got to try the new cheesy gold foil at Wild Turkey. I saw it. that's right, that's right, that's right. And I know you didn't text me back. It's okay. I was that was that was a busy day. That was a busy day. I saw the video. It's like I get a minority. The nose is very similar. Like a dickle. Dickle. Like a nickel, kinda more of like a Tennessee. Almost like a a Flintstone vitamin just on the nose though. Yeah. Yeah. I've But the no that's I like that I feel like. No yeah, it's not a I haven't had a ton of Dickle though, so I don't know. Yeah. Dickle, Dickle. Always talks about that. Yeah, he yeah. That's one he always likes to to go back to. That knows though a lot. That finish. That it's on normal turkey nose to me though. No, no, no. It well you're maybe it's because it's a what eighty eighty three eighty three? In a very different So I think that's the the interesting thing is the pre the low barrel entry proof, you know, everything pre two thousand four was low barrel entry proof. Yeah. It changes, I think. Now, I think they did a really nice job with the new cheesy gold foil. They're trying to mimic the old flavors through blending. But I just think that this is such a unique, different flavor. It really is. And this that's not it. When I think about turkey to me, with what I know now. Yeah. About the modern turkeys that I've gotten accustomed to, that's not it. No. And it's funny because on both of these notes, right? We just brought up a a reference to bruisel. I think there was a bruisel video that they did about a year ago at Wild Turkey. And Bruce Russell is talking about wait until you see what's coming soon. My dad, my granddad all make fun of me. Because they go back to this whole Tater thing. I think and now you realize he's referencing this new throwback to the Austin Nichols archive, the cheesy gold foil collection. So I have not gotten to try that yet, but I love what they did or what Bruce did, trying to say, you know what? I have my granddad, Jimmy Russell, who loves these spicy, big, bold bourbons. My dad Eddie, who's like, yeah, I'll take a little bit more of that age statement, a little bit more rounded, you know. His grandpa's a one one guy. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Jimmy is the one on one guy, kind of sp bold, spicy, Eddie's kind of Which I kinda liked like the grandpa had the 70th, it was a 101. Ye exactly. And then they got the forty fifth with the Russell's thirteenth. Which we just tried, and that's Eddie's, right? And you can tell here that's a little bit more of a comp. Complex older age. so I love the fact that Bruce tried to, you know, let me see what I can do to pay homage to all of this, right? And and I haven't gotten to try it yet, but so I I'll say to me that the the new cheesy gold foil has a punch to it, meaning it it is bold. Which would be Jimmy. Yeah. Yep. Mm-hmm. And it's 120 proof. And I would say that it it drinks about 110. You know, so I I I I think that it it it it's up there. And you get you get the rye spice, you get the the definite notes. I would I would say that the palette, the taste is very similar to this, but it is a lot I would say it's a little more sweet and richer than just the straight eight year one on one. Of course that's a sixteen year Yeah and it's a blend. Right. So it the youngest thing is sixteen years. Right. So there's things older than that in that in that blend. Right. Yeah. You can't age state it any more than the youngest part of that yeah, distillate. So I think what Bruce Russell has done with that that new NA, the the new Austin Nichols archives, is just phenomenal. I walked in the Borman John Eagle and he signed I guess he does this. He he'll go in the warehouse and just sign bottles apparently. I didn't know this. When they ship out to like Warman John Eagle. I walked in there and his bottle was signed. Nice. So it's signed by I'm so excited to see, you know, I'm a huge turkey fan. And I mean one one eight year when they came out with that. I love one it's so good. So I said, like Old Forester 1920 and maybe Wild Turkey Rare Breed were like two of my original first loves and staples, right? And so to see Bruce kind of take this boldness from Jimmy and this age statement, you know, kind of refined. More complex complexity, yeah, from his dad, Eddie. As a Turkey fan, I'm I'm so excited to see where where things are going. And you know, we just tried the Eddie's new the Russell's thirteen, the forty fifth, which was and compared to the previous year. Yeah, which we both have. That we were like, it's the highest proof they ever done, we gotta get that. Which was r was good. It w yeah, it's very, very good, but I think the new forty six in the forty six very, very, very good. Which was really you know, yeah, when you hear them talk about it, that's Eddie. A lot more complexity than it it does have older Yeah barrels in it. Yeah. I I'm I'm as a Turkey fanboy, I'm so excited to see where where it's going with Sure. You know, Eddie just hit forty five, we saw that and now with Bruce kinda this was his first big you know, the Austin Nichols archive, so I think that's cool how they did did that. Yeah, and and grandpa likes the one one, gets a seventieth bottle. So Dad likes the higher proof, gets the thirteenth, forty fifth anniversary and then what he's gonna do, I think it's Yeah, I don't know. And you know, I'm not afraid to grovel and I've called out out before here. So yeah, you know, just give give Bruce a little tag in our you know video. Let know we we love what we're saying. Yeah. Yeah. So Yeah. I I I think that while we're drinking eighty three yeah, which Yeah, we're almost done with this bottle. We might have a a go for by the end of this. It doesn't it has more more of the spice to it of like a of what you think of a one on one is without that age, right? Well yeah. money aside and on a dessert. It's one of the the best things out there. So Yeah, and I I I've been watching Unicorn, you know, and they've been like every other auction there's one on there. Yeah. So have you and I I don't really know. And I know this is getting really long at this point, but because you have the 2003, and for those watching, we're talking about the sixteen year, the Russell's, the barrel proof, which is only eighty nine point five proof. Which is incredible. Is incredible. Have you had the two thousand two? So no. Because I haven't. That's where I always go because I've tried the two thousand three, singular, or I can't have like all of them. And I you know, I I think I I think Dan was generous enough to give you a little pour of the the the two thousand three as well. and I've always just seen the two thousand two and I'm like I And interestingly, the two thousand two is a hundred and sixteen proof. Yeah. The two thousand three is eighty nine point five. So they they must have had the two thousand two at a higher, you know, Rickhouse floor. Whereas that two thousand three just sat. It's so it's so good. And I don't know how many years how many years old the two thousand two is. not really sure. And then so I'm down there, I'm going to breakfast. Steph was still asleep. I'm like, I'm gonna go get grab food and come back up. But I go to sit down, he's like, looking at me funny, I'm like What the hell is this guy looking at? But but he's got his family with him. He's you know, they're they're down in the in the free breakfast, you know, pick up hotel with free breakfast. Typical airline pilot. I was gonna say that too. And I paid for the hotel with points. Yeah. and so he comes over and he's like, Are you Dan? I'm like, Yeah. He's like, I thought that was you and he's like, I'm I'm Andy And so I'm like holy shit. But they were going on vacation, so they they stopped there so that right you know, the guys can go run to Buffalo Trace and Yeah. Groupies now, huh? Seven million big time. Seven thousand followers and groupies. Birthday bourbon. So when I first got this like it's got a phenomenal nose. It does. I love the nose. I was gonna say the nose. This is the I might be sensitive to like a grape smell. 2025? Yes. Okay. This is the one I got. I went down to Lexington to the liquor barn. You know, where they do that that raffle in the morning. Sure, yeah. Yeah. So I didn't win any of the raffles that day, but when you when you go in, they're like, hey, there's stuff hidden throughout the store. Did I pay close to secondary? Yes. But it came with like this this bottle of champagne, which I knew nothing about. Knew nothing about it. Cristal? Yeah. What's Cristal? It's well that's what I thought. I'm like, I don't really care. Corbel, Corbel, yeah, the the the giant eagle. Is that like Osty Ostie, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Ostie Martini. But apparently it's a high end. Champagne. Yes. So I bought the basket just based on So you Aussie in the Licker Barnaby. Yeah. Licker Barn does their baskets, yeah. Yeah. So I got that in a basket. It was hidden, you know, behind some other stuff. Because I know this one's twelve, I believe. On your twenty two, yeah, was a level. Yeah, okay. So 'cause I I don't know. A lot of the birthday bur so they they vary in age statements depending on which year. Or are they generally around eleven to twelve ish? They they stick in like the the I haven't seen any at ten, but eleven to fourteen ish. I'm not gonna sound like an idiot if I'm wrong. I think that one was thirteen. But it might be twelve. We're speculating. We're speculating. I mean in post editing maybe I will put a Yeah, you might wanna he's a fucking post edit that staff staff will post edit. But the twenty twenty one, 'cause my my niece was born twenty twenty one, my brother in law got the twenty twenty one. And I that was I love that one. He gave it to me in a blind with now this is when I first got into bourbon, like the twenty twenty, twenty twenty one time. He gave it with That, Blanton's, Weller Twelve, I can't remember the the fourth one. It's a very different right. Yeah. But the way I was talking about him, he was like, hmm. Kinda maybe doesn't sound like a total idi idiot, you know? And that was my favorite, that was the twenty twenty one birthday. Now I think I d I don't know if I've tried any birthday bourbon. Before today? Right now. Yeah. I love Old Forester. I love their core products. I love that nineteen twenty four, their tenure has become a little bit more yeah. I mean, you go down to Kentucky, it's everywhere. It's a shelfer. It needs to be eighty bucks off. Yeah. You at a hundred at a hundred bucks you're eighty, ninety bucks. I'm not mad. Maybe hundred. But what is it like one twenty? think you can find I don't think I paid that I think I paid less than a hundred bucks. I think you would find them around a hundred bucks. Yeah. I really do. Yeah. you're gonna have to edit that. Sec no no no well because secondary you know the previous wave of nineteen twenty four I got I got the first batch. Yeah, we're not they were not nearly as abundant and secondary price really pushed up a little bit on those. that was really good though. But I w I wanna say last time I was in Kentucky, every single stop I made had nineteen twenty four and maybe worst case scenario one fifteen, one twenty, but there was a lot around a hundred bucks. and for a ten year product, I know when they when they dropped around here, you're like, Go get me. I know, I know, I know. you went down yeah, that's right. You did you went down yeah. Well, because we hadn't seen Right. I mean they were We didn't we didn't know. That was a while back and it was before, you know, it kinda got flooded. And I guess that's a a sign of the times, right? Now everybody's sitting on so many barrels. Yeah. They can sit there and say, you know what, this ten year product, we can put a bunch of barrels out and Which is nice for us. Yeah. but no, as somebody who You know, I introduce you to nineteen twenty when you first started getting into it and it was you with the nineteen twenty and my brother in law with the the Mickters, just the small batch. Yeah. Nineteen twenty, maybe not a a great introductory no bottle. But I hated it. I know. I was like, What is this? And then I developed my palette and now it's one of my favorite pores of all time. You had a lot of the molasses Sugars, I think Old Forrester has to open up. I think it needs time to open up once you crack it. Like I got that President's Choice. Uh-huh. That's I I I wasn't a fan. No, just the just the bourbon. The first time I got the President's Choice, the first time I opened it, I wasn't real impressed. Yeah. I went back to it about a month and a half later. And That was one of the most complex, flavorful drinks I had had. I mean and every sip, it was just like new flavors came out. I went, holy shit, this is phenomenal. Yeah. But it needed that time once it was cracked. Sure. And certain things are like that. Yeah, when and you and I have said that many times. Yeah. I mean, I'm a turkey and a Mick Durse. those are my Those are my two. And Ten Rye. A lot but a lot of stuff that I've had and bottles that I own and have opened up from Nickters that are barrel strength because, you know, they're known for their low you know, we talked about this earlier, low barrel entry proof and yeah, you know, for the ten years, phenomenal products. But a lot of their and they'll come in around ninety-four proof, but their barrel strength products, I've opened up several bottles from them that I own. And you have that first little bit and you're like, God, I hate this. Yeah. But I'm like Well that mectures ten, that's how you felt with that the one that you opened. no no. So that was the the the barrel strength bourbon that I did my bottle but the bottle the bottle my own, right? And I'm like, I went down there. Then we tried it. I like, this is Yeah. And and so some of them, to your point, certain things and now I know, but it only seems to be on barrel strength stuff from Mictors. I open it and I'm like, I don't even care what the first sip tastes like because I know tomorrow it's gonna be amazing. Yeah. Yeah, I almost think I almost wonder when you get a bottle home, you just crack it. Don't even drink it. Just wait. Yeah. Just wait. Because it I think that whether it's just been stored that long or or or sealed up, I'm I'm not sure, but I know they say neck pour. Yeah. It's like I first first pour. Exactly. Yeah. I I don't know that I believe in the neck pour. I think it's about just getting a little bit of fresh air in the bottle, right? You know. And so if that's Neck pour if that's what people if you want to call it that, that's fine. So the the bourbon hunters out of Columbus, Ohio, do that. I watch them. Yeah. I love their podcast. Yes.
