those out.
Good evening. Welcome to Bourbon, and Beyond. Tonight we got a special guest. It's Family's up from Virginia. So this is Jared. Howdy. And tonight. We're drinking. We're drinking. Ass Pocket Whiskey, lot number five just came out. I was on one of the pre-orders. There you go. So. The last one was crazy good.
The last one was very good. Very good. Yeah. Jared, you took a... Really enjoyed it. Took a bottle back. So this one is a 20 year. geez. It is a Tennessee whiskey. Okay. And the mash bill on it is, closely resembles George Dickle. Okay. They won't say where this came from, but it's Dickle. It's Dickle.
Well, for 20 years they're not. They got to find it somewhere. Good point.
Dan And Bob (01:13.164)
I can smell it from over here.
So this is by the guitarist Derek Trucks, Tedeschi Trucks. He's a blues guitarist, phenomenal. He started with lot number one. They were just trying to find somewhere. What's the other one you have? I thought it was early. I have the lot number four. Okay. The one just previous to this. that was a 10 year old, 107 proof.
I won't say where that's from, but at least everybody has a 107 proof at this point though, so. Yeah. That smells great. And it's just super Yeah, it's crazy. It smells fruity. Yeah. It's like a apple strudel or. Yeah. Love the color too. Nice and dark. Yeah, 20 year. Yeah.
So we just did that Woodford Reserve double, double oaks. yeah. Last week in that. They had three sitting on the shelf still. need to listen. It's 200 bucks. yeah. The reason why Weller doesn't sit on the shelf is because it's exceptionally well priced. Agree. I think that because of that, it becomes a weird commodity and because it's as rare as it is people.
willing to pay more than that. But when it's a $200 bottle of whiskey sitting on the shelf, somehow you don't get the excitement around it that everything else does.
Dan And Bob (02:52.366)
But then you try it and you're like, oh, I see why. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Like we talked about this the other night. I need to go get it. I probably was there the other night. I should have grabbed it. But my wife was there and I'm not buying it while she's there. I don't know what you're talking about, None of us do.
Dan And Bob (03:18.862)
That is fantastic. Super sweet. Wow. The lasting, just lasting. Yeah, it holds. I think that's the part that surprised me. It's a lot sweeter than I expected. Yeah. It's really good.
Dan And Bob (03:55.086)
84 % corn, 8 % rye, 8 % malted barley. I mean, I catch the rye on it is the part that stands out to me. I mean, for such a small amount, guess it's pretty darn prevalent. But you don't get that pepper. Yeah. So it's very, it's got the rye bite, but yeah, it's sweet. Yeah. Like you get the, it does smell phenomenal. It smells. That's probably my favorite part.
I mean, honest smells great. Yeah.
so that's what they, so that's pocket whiskey. They only bottle the 200 milliliter bottles. Yeah. Cause they don't want you to save this stuff. know, they want you to take it. it.
And it's like there's nothing left of the Lot Number 4 there's nothing left of the previous lots. It's gone. It's a limited 20 barrels. is that it? That's I hadn't heard of this one.
But apparently George Dickel did a large production in 2003 to 2005. So this is all, there's not many barrels left from that one. It's got a little bit of weak funk on it too.
Dan And Bob (05:19.763)
Great legs. Yeah, I mean it holds the the after just I I can still taste it.
like this with like a nice big cube ice. Let it set.
This is great. Yeah, I think it's.
Short run, small batch. I mean, guess I would call it 20 small batch. I mean, I think some of the other small batches are much less small, I mean, it is really nice. I like the premise of this. You know, it's designed to be drank. Yeah. I know so many times we were talking about that last time I was here, we've got some of this stuff that you're like, I don't even want to open that because it's expensive and rare, but like this is meant to be enjoyed.
Well, only have one bottle that I haven't opened. Well. And that's my retirement. Yeah, you're right, of course. Right. Everything else, it has been opened or will be in it. Yeah. Yeah. That fat, great old granddad. Yeah, that one's funny. Yeah.
Dan And Bob (06:31.916)
Yeah, I like this. as I'm not a huge dry drinker, but it's not overwhelming. It's not an 8 % ride. That's kind of the same as, you know, a Buffalo Trace.
Mash Bill number one, speaking of. So I'm picking up that whole seven bottle vertical of the benchmark. Tomorrow you get it? Tomorrow. That's nice. And that's Buffalo Trace, but know, Mash Bill one. It's very cool. Yeah, I think that's the, that was a screaming good deal. Yeah. For one, Gage Taylor small batch. yeah, make that trade.
And then can do a whole, we're gonna have to do that for three days. was seven bottles. We'd here, you'd part me back across the street. Lisa, come to the bar. It'd be all bad. It's like a nice little peanut buttery smell too. maybe that's the funk that I can't about. Yeah, it's like, I got like a little.
I wanted to say like a macadamia nut on the finish. Okay. I can see that too. Just a hair. Not bitter, but just... It has a really nice nose on it. I think that's the... Agreed. Yeah.
Dan And Bob (08:08.93)
Yeah, I like that. do too. So they introduced this. Derek Trucks was one of the bidders for Jerry Garcia's guitar. yeah. Christie's auction. when you see the videos, everybody's got these. A little fun. That's great. Yeah, that's good. Very cool. And I think there are still a few bottles left. Okay.
of the run, they sell out pretty quick. And there was what, two in there? Two in there, $129 for two bottles. $65. And if you look at the price comparison for the 20 year old. Dickle or whatever it is, it's actually a really big ice cream. 20 year old, yeah. You know, because you're looking normally $600 to $800.
Dan And Bob (09:05.582)
Very interesting. Listen, I think that everybody's gotta have an angle. think that this is the, I mean, at the end of the day, the whiskey is the thing that matters. Yeah. Very cool. Yeah, great. I mean, we should probably. Splash me. Yeah, we'll get cleaned up. I'm gonna save this glass, because I wanna come back and smell it again. I got it. Oh, you got it? Yeah, I got it.
Dan And Bob (09:39.406)
This is the last run. Yeah, this is lot four.
Dan And Bob (09:47.064)
Don't waste it.
Dan And Bob (09:58.222)
What was the proof on this one? 107. No, that's right. And this one was 117. That was 117. Yeah. That Lot 5. This one smells a little, it's more ethanol-y. Yeah, it's not nearly as aromatic. Yeah. Yeah, it's definitely more, which makes sense. This is higher proof, right? No, this is lower. Oh, this is the lower. Yeah. Oh, jeez. Yeah. It's more ethanol-y. It really is. Yeah. That's been open much longer too.
Yeah, but there's not an age statement on that. right. It's probably... Even if you just do it this way. Yeah.
Dan And Bob (10:42.702)
It's, yeah. I remember it tasting really, really good, Yeah, that's good. I it's great. Yeah, it's funny, this one is a little smoother. I think I like the flavor of the newer batch better. It's a little deeper. This is like a lighter. This is definitely lighter. It's lighter on the palate. Certainly, the nose is like, to your point, I don't.
There's not a ton. No, I I catch the strong ethanol note. Yeah, I think I'm learning that I you know some people's there. They're proof wars. Yeah, I think I'm more of an age or I think even like age in the barrel. Yeah, I just think it makes we did not creek the other day that 21 was crazy good. Yeah, so yeah, yeah, it was not creek.
That's good. Do you try to be, I'll go grab the 21. can try that Yeah, I'd love to. I'd love to. Yeah, that was good. Yeah, it's good. But yeah, like you opened that and I could smell it from here. This one, I don't think you could. Yeah. Right.
And this is like a softer. That's good though. It is. It's really good. Little more orange. Yeah. Versus the dark fruits. Definitely more citrus.
Dan And Bob (12:03.502)
Like I said, I don't get any of that nutty aroma that I have in the new one either. It is good. It's either the advantage or the disadvantage of sourced bottles though, right? You're not gonna find 20 year old whiskey sitting around all that often. So when you get it, you get it and you're special run it or whatever that thing is. And it's like sitting on a bottle like that. You just got to experience it.
And if you're paying 65 bucks a pop, just enjoy it. Yeah. Yeah. I agree.
Dan And Bob (12:42.892)
If you told me I had to force a bottle, I don't know that I could. I like you have to have one or the other. Yeah. They're pretty different. Yeah. think when you mentioned this seems newer, like I think that's exactly what I noticed is that it's not as matured as this is. But I don't know, the proof difference doesn't stand out either. It doesn't. No. points, but still, this drinks really, really well. It does.
And I think each lot he's tried to go for something different. Yeah. Yeah. I appreciate that. and I don't know that. I think in my younger days, you know, Jack Daniels was my go-to. It's everybody's. But I think I definitely steered away from it. but, know, other than that, that toasted heritage, but yeah, which I've got, okay. I mean, that was really good. And then.
That that lock five is fantastic. Yeah, I cracked it when we got it when I came in just yeah, and see what it was. wow. Yeah, this is gonna be good. I don't know. Have you tried that double double? I have tried to double double out. OK, that's good. Yes, it is very good. It has been many years, but it is really good. Yeah, that was.
So my mom and dad got me that for my birthday. And we had a little bit of it then, but when we did it for the podcast, it's because the OHLQ came out with another release. Special release, And, Yeah, it's good. It is really good.
man.
Dan And Bob (14:29.23)
That's only a 90, I don't think I realized that was only 90 proof. Yeah, and it doesn't even do that. Yeah, I agree. It's so smooth that. Yeah. Interesting. And I don't think, they don't talk about how long those things sit in either of those barrels or anything else, so.
Dan And Bob (14:47.63)
Yeah, so this is a it's an absolute win. Yeah agreed. Yeah delicious. I I'll be curious to see what they come out with next. You know, because if he keeps doing the picks. I was reading about it. I guess there's a like a distribution network that does like the barrel. Alright, here's the extra barrels. Yeah, you can come in and pick. And how do get on that list? Well, there's a.
There's a Kentucky Borough Distributor Network. There's a George Dickel Distributor Network. MGP probably got a long list of everything. and I, you know what, I feel like everybody's doing that 95-5 ride, that MG stuff. mean it.
It's decent. There's people who really like it, but I'm glad trying the other stuff. So Jared, anything else you want to try? Honestly, I'll have some of the double oat because it's been years.
Dan And Bob (16:05.806)
I'll release my glass.
We have more glasses if we need it. I think last time I was here. That's mine. Go ahead. Good. I'm not going to say no to this guy. No.
Dan And Bob (16:25.358)
It's so sweet and butterscotch-y. See butterscotch is a great way to describe bourbon. It's so, and this one. gosh. It just overwhelms Dude, butterscotch is perfect. Yeah, it overwhelms you on this one. Smells like, yeah, no this is, it's crazy. This makes me think of my grandfather loved butterscotch ice cream and that's exactly where this took me.
I think I'm gonna have find a bottle to OADE Armagnac Wasn't that 20 year old? That was a 38 year old. You're never fed in there. Well he comes out, he's constantly looking for, I think, because that was so good. It was really, really good. It's so different from any of this normal stuff. Yeah. But it was crazy good. This is fantastic. Yeah, this is fantastic. This is the kind of thing that makes me want to go sit in a cigar lounge and just tell them to leave me the bottle. Yeah.
Yes. I have feeling this bottle will go. Yeah. And this was not this year's though, right? No, this was last year's. Because that becomes the question is, is this year's this good? This? god. Yeah, it's tough.
Dan And Bob (17:33.454)
And it's got the classic Woodford profile. It definitely does. But man, is. It's just buttery. It's so good. Yeah. That might be one of the better bourbons I've had this year. I know it's only March, but I'm just saying. That's great. Yeah. Really enjoy that. Yeah, it's Smells fantastic. You get that char, that.
Yeah, well, it's like we've said this before. When you go in there, you see them charring those barrels. It's not oak fire. It's not like firewood. It's marshmallowy, caramely that you get out of those when they're charring those barrels. It's crazy to me how they've got that stuff down to a science. That's the part I'm always impressed by this is that you can say that this is a natural distillation and it's a natural wood product, but there's so much science that.
They've been able to figure out to make this stuff different and better and age and it's crazy to me when you see it.
Dan And Bob (18:39.746)
Yeah, nose is crazy. It's so good. It's so good.
Dan And Bob (18:48.942)
Timmy, candles, this would be a great set for a house. You can buy whiskey flavored everything, but somehow it's never quite right. So we're friends with 1820 house. Yeah. Palestine. Sure. I'm messaging Missy all the time. I'm like, listen, how do we do this? need come out with a bourbon brass and beyond candle. You do. You do. And you can change them up by the season depending on what's, that's crazy. A 10 year, a 15 year, 20 year. Yeah, it's crazy.
Dan And Bob (19:21.846)
even the way it just holds glass. it. Yeah. 1820 house. Hope you're Hope you're listening. We'll do a double double oak candle. Man, it's good.
Dan And Bob (19:43.822)
And again, this is just like, this is what? Seven points lower. Yeah. I'm sorry. 17 points. This is 90, right?
Dan And Bob (19:52.655)
It's just like a vanilla. It's great. Yeah, even those $200 bottle. We said this when we did this the other day. You taste this, you're like, this is why this is a $200 bottle. It's worth it. Yeah, it is. It's a ton of depth. I would rather see a bottle be priced at what it's worth, and then people be able to buy it. it. It's Sit on the shelf. It's an allocated product. Sit on the shelf. It's not...
Secondary market expensive. It's available and it's expensive, but it's available. Like I would buy this 10 times over a birthday bourbon. Yeah, and it's I mean secondary price on birthday bourbon is two of those three of those. Yeah, I agree. Yeah, I had said like even the last birthday bourbon in 2025 phenomenal nose on it. Yeah, but
Yeah. To drink it, it's like, Yep. It's all right. But this is just... It's so good. It's good. It's really good. Anything else you want to try? I mean, I'm never going to say no, So what do you... What do we try? What do you have since we last went? For real. That's probably the better question. I got the Pappy 15. I got the Pappy Family Reserve Rye.
I got a 1948 JW Dant. I got the Americas 47 from Monks Road in a single barrel. we went down to Logs Still to store it. Cool. Dust the shirt. And actually that's a great. I've never had it. It is good. it. That is a great drinking burger. I actually just bought another one the other day. Yeah. It's, it's. So this is two ryes and a wheat.
Yeah. Oh, okay. It's a blend. Interesting. This is on the list of ryes that don't drink like a rye too. Like I think this is. Which is, Interesting, because I don't. We'll do this in a vlog.
Dan And Bob (22:02.894)
And it's younger, you don't think about it, but it is really, really good. It's great color on that too. I'm good. I've had it. Like I said, I just got another one. It smells so light. I palette on this is, like I said, it doesn't drink like a rye. I mean, it is, but. So Log Still is Distilled Spirits Producer number 47. This was the original family.
DSP number. Wow. It's like, really? It's weeded. It's crazy. So they wanted to do a 47 bottle for the inauguration, no matter who elected. that's their DSP number. And so they ended up doing a bottling of this for the inauguration with a presidential seal. Now they can't sell those. Sure. But so what they did is they redid the juice.
It's the same juice and then we read you the bottle for common America's 47. And this is a fantastic drinker. Yeah. It really is. It's not at all what I expected. It's cause it's so, the nose is so light. And it's 94 proof. I wouldn't have guessed that actually. I think that's the other thing. I'm realizing that some of the...
lower proof stuff just drinks so nice. It really does. so much of the flavor. It does. Yeah. I think those guys who love proof are just for proof. don't know. Agreed. Some of that higher proof stuff is terrible. It is. Yeah.
Or it gets really ethanol-y. And you're is not what I'm looking for. What I'm looking for with this flavor. Yeah. I think some of the bourbons that have been, when their entry proof was high, and they're not getting those oils and fats, and it's just really strong and ethanol-y, it's just not the same. Whereas,
Dan And Bob (24:06.476)
you know, 40 years ago when they put a lower entry proof into the barrel. And then if they kept it there, it just, took so much time to mature. When we drink some of these older bottles, they're insane about how different and flavorful they are. They didn't sit long, like some of these are four, six years. None of them are crazy long. But I think the entry proof makes a gigantic difference. And again, maybe they were doing different chars on the barrels.
They couldn't have been doing that much different than what they do. They try everything. Yeah, okay. So yeah, I'm always impressed at some of these older things. again, maybe it's because they've sat, maybe it's because, but they're crazy good. Yeah. That's good. Yeah, we're real happy with that. Yeah. It's like you have this kind of sweet that leads right into a bit of a bitter at the very end, which I really enjoy. It's good.
Dan And Bob (25:06.574)
You get both the wheat and the rye out. do? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think it was. It's good. And of course, if you get to go down and see Wally, even better. It's even better. It's even better. Yeah.
Dan And Bob (25:22.862)
So that was a favorite. What else was there?
We tried a lot. As soon as he was feel like... I think we've got to finish with an old Dusty. Yeah. Sure. think it's...
Dan And Bob (25:41.515)
So this was like a heirloom type thing. I found this bottle, but we went down and visited Lockstilte Acillary, which is on the grounds of the original JW Dant, where this was distilled. Cool. Yeah. Yeah. Very cool. And JW Wally Dant gave us a tour of the facility. That's crazy. That's cool. So.
No, I'll just well, yeah, use this. Yeah, use that one soon. I'll put this. Splash me. Good. Splash. So this was distilled 1948. Sir. Bottled 1952. Wait, distilled what? 48. it's crazy. Yeah, it's older than my dad. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So the story on this is
The family sold the distillery to Armand Hammer in 1943, but the family still ran it. So Wally's grandfather was still the president of the distillery, lived on the grounds, 30 feet from the Rick houses. Wow. That's amazing. Overlooking the distillery. And that's where we stayed overnight. no kidding. Cool. Very cool.
And then he ran the distillery until 1962 when it was in 52 it was sold to Schenley who also owned old stag Bernheim And then in 1962 they consolidated distilling to Bernheim and old stag shut down the The dance that had been there for over a hundred years. Wow But this
bottle was distilled and bottled there. That's impressive. Yeah. there's a nice black licorice smell on this. Yes. It's like really intense. a little bit of that little stuffy thong, but there's also that.
Dan And Bob (27:59.772)
So JW Dan was original story behind JW Dan was that their original still was a log still. So it was a charred heavily charged log still. It's always not ethanol. Yeah. It's like it's you might get a coke. You might drink in a yeah, there's no bite to it. There's no what is the proof of this? You would not know that. No, you actually would not.
Dan And Bob (28:29.838)
Yeah, I guess that it's like man What a unique flavor this has yeah Gosh also excellent The the wild turkey the old dust. Yeah. Yeah The old granddad It's great so we even did the In 1969 so in 62 when shenley shut down the facility they took a lot of the barrels
shipped them to Canada and then did a Canadian, cause the Canadian whiskey was becoming popular. So they did a Canadian whiskey blend. they used 16 year, J.W. Dan and blended it with 16 year Canadian whiskey. And that's what this is from. I don't know. Kidding. funny. So, I mean, if you're a Canadian whiskey fan,
in a whiskey fan. I'm a whiskey I don't know that I love lot of and as a Canadian, I struggle, but I grew up on Canadian whiskies. I'm definitely leaning more towards the Tennessee. I'm a corn mash guy. It's just, I don't know. They're not bad. They're just probably not my preferred flavor profile. So, Shedley had owned...
but had bought in 52 JWDant. It bought OFC. It's great. And old stack. So they also did it with a 1952 OFC. That's crazy. And this was phenomenal. Where did you get this? It's like a- Oh, there's a There's a series of samples here that we've gotten. No kidding. So-
We did a podcast on, we did the 1944 old crow. And a, which was amazing. And a friend of ours named Morgan Proctor from Winthrop Lickers in Florida. It like, oh man, that war time. He's a war efficient. We were talking about that. And I said, well, you send me some sample bottles up. Cause I didn't have any at that time. I said, I'll send you back some sample. Right. So he sent up like seven different samples. Cool.
Dan And Bob (30:56.206)
of all stuff that he's... cool. It was all just sitting around. Oh, that's amazing. Yeah. store-picked Oh, super cool. Or stuff that he had curated. Like, he sent us up a 30-year Macallan. That's so cool. Yeah. I love how much is left in there. We're not getting rid of any of it. Yeah. Well, I'm not allowed to get rid of this because Steph really likes this. It's the Jefferson's Presidential. Huh.
21 year Kentucky right no kidding that was phenomenal. Yeah, the old Commonwealth Kentucky Nectar Corona cigar barrel pick There's a whole bunch of those over just yeah, it's a double oak turkey. Yeah, where you this stuff where yeah, yeah ASW fiddler, that's great barrel pick. It's a seven year nine month weeded bourbon finished in cognac one year two months, I mean
This is good too. That's really, really cool. We did finish it, but he sent us up a sample of Ode, Arminac. It's a 38-year Arminac. Incredible. That was fantastic. Can you still smell it in there? Oh yeah. It was so dark. I mean, that's why I even want to rinse out the thing. It's so different. Oh, that's fantastic. That's so good.
Well, because when we drank that old crow, I mean, that was the coolest thing, think, for me, despite the fact that it was a great bourbon. Yeah. Yeah. Just thinking about what was happening when it was being bottled. I mean, it's wild. Yeah. Just incredible distilled in 39 for the atomic bomb. That's what I mean. It wild. Yeah. So cool. Very cool. Oh, yeah. I think we should do this. So we're going to do the 1952 OFC by Shenley.
A lot of glasses. It's a blend. It's a 1952 OC with a Canadian six-year blend. Okay. I think this is better than a 16-year dant 16-year Canadian blend. I think this one is.
Dan And Bob (33:00.118)
Yeah, that's fine. Yeah, just. Okay, there's more over there. yeah, there's more over there. Do a log still graph.
Dan And Bob (33:11.096)
We gotta finish these samples off anyway. Best way to finish the sample. Well, let's try a little bit more.
This is what happened when I came over last time. Well, let's open this and let's try this. This is my favorite part. Yeah, this is the- I mean, it is best part.
Dan And Bob (33:37.134)
It's Man, it's funny how so different some these It's just wild how different they are. Thanks Morgan. Yeah, same with that.
This is one of those ones that we talk about how age things look. Yeah, it does not at all. It's super light. Especially when you're like, yeah, yeah. When you go apple juice. yeah. But it's crazy. It smells really good. And you think about it like 1952 old fashioned copper. Also very well, that's not at all what I expected.
Oh, it is, gosh. Lemony, I don't. Yeah, and there's some like, you said apples earlier too, like straight up, like there's some apple juice finished on that. This is delicious. Yeah. Yeah, this is surprising. I would not have expected this flavor profile from this.
Yeah, it's so smooth. This is a guy so easy to drink. is a great experience. This was a great sample. Yeah, like this is fantastic. I think that's one my favorite podcasts. Yeah, I doing what you have in the thought podcast with Ali. And then doing that with Morgan. Yep. This is ridiculously easy to drink. Yeah, yeah.
Dan And Bob (35:07.342)
The whole timer got stuffed You know what mean? They did. 100%. Yeah. Absolutely. This is before the science kicked in. This is when, like, just by look, feel, This is when Pappy had a sign that said chemists prohibited beyond this point, you know, or whatever it was. That is impressive. That is really, really good. Oh gosh, I can't believe how easy that is to drink.
Dan And Bob (35:34.877)
1952. Wow. 75 years ago. Like you said, it's just good. It is. It's just good.
