Bourbon & Beyond Bottle Share at Monk's Road Boiler House w/JD Fritzges; Ep. 92

Dan and JD: J D Dan? Nice to finally get to do this in person. Absolutely. tell me what we got here. We have Old Louisville eleven year MGP single barrel pick that we had done earlier this year, 60, 36, and four. So it's the high rye, higher rye, highest rye MGP mash bill. And we had done a nine year prior to this. And then when we went to pick up that nine year from Amin, I know if he had the pleasure of meeting Amin over at Old Louisville. I had I hadn't met him. I was actually over in his building doing an Oak and Age pick. Okay. And you've got to go through and actually go through and see their stuff as well and that's yeah what a nice little place over there now absolutely yeah he just bought the old seagrim's plant the building so when you go to the roof he'll take you up on the roof and you can actually see the Michter's where they're doing their own distillation yeah and you can also see Brown-Forman and Brown-Forman's the only one with smoke can come out the top right now But the nine year was a hundred and thirty-three proof and it competes every bit with GTS. Nice So then when we were there picking it up, he pulled from this barrel and we were all like, Yeah, we'll take that one too. And so within about a month and a half later we picked up that one. But every bit of your stone fruit got your brown sugar on it. Touch of smoke or toasted marshmallow, which I get on a lot of D Pow. What I love about that one is it's it's not the the stone fruit like hits you and then the sweetness just moves back. It just settles really nice. Usually when we're doing a pick, we're looking for something that's gonna be creamy, right? We want it to stick to your cheeks and your tongue and your gums like honey, right? You want it to stick because then you're gonna pull the entire profile of what's in that bottle. And it's gonna move like a roller coaster from start to finish all the way into the back. Now I have a theory that the layering, like with each step the it seems like Almost like it's pushing the flavors down of your tongue. Yes. The thicker the better. And then they just kinda hold on to that. Mm-hmm. When you get something that's w what Tyler likes to call wet, he'll say, it's kind of wet. But I it's all wet, it's a liquid, you know? But he just means it's got a very watery mouthfeel to it, mouth experience. where it runs off of the tongue and you don't really get a lot of that. You don't pull a lot of it. You want something chewy. Yes. Right. that's good. Next next time I see I'm gonna have that nine year so you can try that one. Okay. I pulled this one for the proof point. I didn't know who all was gonna be here. I know one thirty three is a lot for a lot of people. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not necessarily looking for a proof. I'm looking for flavor. I will drink a ninety proof fifty year old bourbon all day long and get that flavor out of it. but that's really nice. You don't get a lot of that ethanol. You don't get a lot of that. No It it doesn't it's doesn't hit you at the tip really. And I think a lot of people are burnt out on MGP, but the the true fans know what MGP really is. And now they're coming out with their own brand, MGP. Well in the I mean they're the old school low barrel entry proof that I don't have to You know, with that higher water content they could just get so much more flavor out of the wood, right? Yep. Whether I mean there have been some things MGP I'm maybe not necessarily my palate, but there are so many things that the flavor that comes out of it. Yes. And that comes down to the N D P that's playing around with it. You know, some people know what they're doing and some people are experimenting with what they're doing. And when the people that really know how to treat that MGP like a mean at old Louisville, you've got Ch Chase over at Nulu who's really finding in His stride with what he's putting out with the maple brulees and the double oats, and he's really learned how to treat that MGP. That's good. So we're here, Bourbon and Beyond. Yeah. Concerts yesterday. Yesterday was day one. Who stuck out to you as like exceptional? Who did you really love? So and and I'm gonna say this, this is a little weird because it was an early band. Stanley Simmons. Okay. It they're the it's the kids of Gene Simmons from KISS. No kidding. I didn't put the two and two together. It's it's their kids. And I'll tell you what, of all the bands, I mean put together great sound, great harmonies, great just talented. Yeah. I like scene. You know, it's just like a new bourbon that just comes out that is just really good, and you're just like okay, okay. That's good stuff. We liked it. Yeah, especially when a company comes out with a four-year-old and you're you can recognize the the great qualities of that, and just know that number another three, four years, it's gonna be tremendous. for me at the concert venue, there were three that really stuck out in my mind as being exceptional performances. The first was Linda Perry with four non-blondes Man, the pipes on her still like it's unreal. Right. And then live for as long as they've been doing it. Well in in and live was a throw-in. Yeah, they were last minute. So they replaced Joan Jett, who was who's supposed to be here, she hurt her back. And to see them perform that was really a treat. And then Queens of the Stone Age I thought just rocked the place down. I mean holy moly. The the talent on those the music musically talented and gifts that those guys have. And and we ran back and forth, I think, between stages. I I probably had fifty thousand steps yesterday. You know, the Fray was really good. That's the newer style. The Fray, plain white t shirts. Yeah, the plain white T's were good too. Lindsay Sterling, the violinist, was awesome. I don't know how she bends and moves like that. And then it says there was an object in the track and it would still be tracked. And still be able to play the violin. Yeah. It makes me wanna see her like a feature show that she does. With all the costume changes, just what she does as a the like a theater not a happy. And she's got classical stuff as well as movies. I'm not literally gonna do this. That's talent you don't see at least that's who you looking forward to seeing today. Well I'm I really like Mumford & Sons Mm-hmm. You know, so I'm I'm that's what I'm queued up about. I think today I think we looked at some of the earlier stuff and we're like, you know what? I'm gonna do the bottle share today. Yep. Come in and bring some stuff and then whatever time we make it back to the venue. I mean yesterday was long day. And didn't get back to the hotel until midnight. I said well. Yeah, we were in the same boat. We got there about one o'clock. Yeah. I mean I mean we get back stuff. Steph was great. And I and then I'm like, all right, well now I guess I get to do my editing and put out the podcast from from from Derek yesterday. Did that interview with Derek Trucks. Yep. Been waiting for a long time for that one. There's plenty of food in there. And and they're great people. They they they kept saying, All right, no, we'll do it, we'll do it and then we said we're going to Bourbon & Beyond Meet you in media tent from this time to this time. And then they ended up stairs and said I'm out here being a little bit late, but it worked out. We got our ten minutes in and what a nice guy. I love that you had that experience. You know, just the music background, the bourbon background. And I think they do go hand in hand, but I even say that about flying. No, it's there's science but it's really an artist. And to have that touch, that feel, that taste. You a hunter certainly. So old Louisville, final thoughts. So using your scale out of five. Out of five. So it's a good present of someone as like three nine, four. Somewhere in there. I'm I really like it. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, we were really high on this one as well. And it it it when we received this one we were doing going back and forth between the nine year and the eleven year. That every once in a while the nine year would win and then the eleven year would win. And then we blended them. So dude took two of the bottles and did a half fifty fifty blend with both of them. Yeah. And he's like that might be better than both of them individually. So it's it's crazy just experimentation, what you can learn about What these profiles do when they marry. I think maybe I'll go four. I'm not I'm not gonna be wishy washy on it, but yeah. Yeah, I do like it. A lot. Yeah, that's right where we were. We were in that four to four point two realm on it. And then we were about four three, four four on the nine year. What I like the rye taste on it. That's what you're seeing in your It's really pleasant. You get a little bit of that orange marmalade. Like I I always say when I when I'm drinking, I get that orange marmalade. Yeah. That's nice. I think we should follow this up though. He said, let's do it. I think we need to try that Ass Pocket Whiskey Rye I think we should. Yeah, I'll give it software format spelling. So Derek gave me this yesterday. eleven year old. It's hundred proof. I do believe this is MGP as well. nice. Ninety five five. Probably close. Yeah. So this just came out this year. Okay. And then they also came out with a new search. Okay. Which was with him with Danny Wimmer. Yeah. No, I don't have a bottle of that. I did try that with him. He opened a bottle, handed it to me, just I took a sweep and then he took a s he pulled it out of his pocket, his ass pocket. well he had his people go grab it. That would have been funny if he reached back behind and pulled it out of his back pocket though. That is what this is called, right? Yeah. And it does it so it's I have a number of I'm I I have been a fan of it. Lot five was a twenty year old Tennessee whiskey. And I bel bring it? I b I d I brought it. Okay. dang it it's one of my favorites. I think you know I'm a rag guy. Yeah. Well and that's why I brought a few things to It's got that marmalade. Yeah. I was getting like a like a maple syrup. Yeah, I can see that too. It's like a well gotta tell you a pancake maple syrup. Yeah. Cheers. That is nice. Wow. No, that's a chef. And there's no dill on that whatsoever. No. None. Dude, this I might I may have found your rye. Yeah. 'Cause he hates the dill note. Right. And I'll be honest, I was never a Rye guy. And I I s I've been listening What was your gateway? Did you have like a breakthrough moment with Rye that a specific one where you're like, you know what, I like that. I've had Yes. So I I think my first one was the Bourbon Pursuit Triple Mash Rye. Great choice. Yes. And then I'm like, okay, I think I I think I can try this. I think I can do this. And then from there, camera. So I did an oak and age pick. But I fell in love with that. Now I and I've always been like an old JWD fan. Like that old school Bardstown high rye bourbon. Because that's that's what my grandfather drank. And so I but I I think like in the the older bourbons, you don't get a lot of that that rye aftertaste, that rye spice. Yeah. It's a little more mellow, more tranquil. But I definitely get that hundred percent. Yeah, that's that's a good one. My my breakthrough rye was Michter's that lower rye content. I think it's like fifty-two percent. It's got a higher corn content in it. Yeah. Michter's was my door to what I know rye whiskey now. And the best rye whiskey I've ever had was Nashville Barrel Company single barrel. It was an 11-year-old and it was called the James the Godfather, which James is their blender down at Nashville Barrel Company. And this thing was a hundred and twenty nine proof at eleven years old and it was a beautifully just mingled single barrel that he discovered and was like, I gotta put that out. what was that So a lot of this stuff now Derek is actually they're putting it in the barrel. You know, so he goes in, they they taste the mash, they taste the distillate, they put it in the barrel, and then they're waiting. So they've got stuff that they've been waiting on that they go to check it every year. Yeah. Does he disclose what barrels they're using? No. Not to me yet. Yeah. 'Cause like Peerless they exclusively use Kelvin. Okay. And Kelvin is known for their craft in their wood, you know, and independent stage company, they're known for mass production of, you know, putting out barrels to ninety percent of the trail. That's like Buzzard's Roost Yep. Yes. so talk with Jason. He was telling me he's got seventeen proprietary chars and toasts that he uses for all his stuff. Yeah. I mean it's amazing, huh? How many different variations before they figure out what they want. Because you don't you're not gonna put out twenty two different products, right? Okay. That nose is so nice. Yeah. This will be expensive. I love it when the nose gets better. Have you ever woken up the next morning and nose your glass, empty glass with that brown spot in the bottom of it? So I we went to north of Bourbon for dinner Wednesday night. And I broke down and did a King Kentucky 17 year old the waitress kept coming over and went, Can take your glass? I'm like, No. No, no, it's dry. I ended up buying the glass. She gave it to me. help and it's still sitting in my hotel room. I can't wait to it you really pull the wood oakiness out of it once it sits. And it's amazing. And you get the grain. If you really get that pungency with the corn and the rye once it's been able to sit and just dry out. Yeah. So we started with the old grandad, the nineteen seventy six old granddad, which a treat. it's very sad and very sessed to be showing I don't I don't think you can beat I mean man. I love the old dusties, but I I think that's a pamper that it's got a little bit of that nuttiness, it's got a little bit of that it's just a great fruit. For me on that dusty, I was getting a strong marashino cherry. I think you brought brought up Dr. Pepper after that, where it was almost like a flat Dr. Pepper with the cherry note. how did they get all twenty seven flavors into that can? I I I don't know. I don't know. But he's a doctor, so he he must know how to do it. I ripped that one off a dude from last episode. So I thought I'd bring something else. I asked a lot of questions. I know what that is. This is a nineteen Eighty three. Austin Nichols Wild Turkey. You know when I was born? Nineteen eighty three? Eighty four. Eighty four. This is before I was still going to parties with my dad at that point. I c I can't do that. That's not that kind of podcast. Well, I brought Bourbon Hunters to the boot. you lost your lost your safety cover. I brought the Bourbon Hunters. to the bourbon brass and beyond. That's what she said. So I am because I could probably catch breaking the seal. Hopefully I don't break cork on this one. so gentle. what's that game? So I I wanted to do this with you. I appreciate it. This is my favorite distillery, it's no secret. You know, and I'll be honest, I I have really come to love the So I think that's the journey of the bourbon enthusiast. I think we all grow through those premature, I love everything Buffalo Trace, and it can't get much better than Buffalo Trace. Yeah. Blanton's Colonel Taylor Tube. It's just they do such a marvelous job with their packaging. And then once we dive into profiles and we start sipping a lot of things, when you get to wild turkey, there's something different about it. Absolutely. And I think that the fact that it claws they they've changed very little. Yes. Even their barrel entry proof has not moved a lot. Yeah. And So I didn't want to make the trip with it. I do have that Russell Reserve two thousand three. I've only had it once. It's that I referenced on an episode not long ago about that one three. And and I I turn and I look, I'm like, all right, do I take it? Do I take it? When I come to you. Absolutely. D so butterscotch Those older wild turkeys. Have this butterscotch. And it's like you're walking around with your grandpa, you're young again, he pulls that candy out of his pocket, you know, still a little bit warm. You unpackage it and it melts on your tongue. Yes. Yeah. It's got this confectioner's sugar, butterscotch. You still get that funk, that wild turkey funk that all of us have grown to love. Maybe a hint of cinnamon sugar, but it's not strong. Right. It's like the cinnamon sugar with butter. Yeah. I've had that for breakfast as a kid all the time. Yeah. Someone buys us some cohorts. It just they want to go. And I did this, we did Wild Turkey Generations. I've heard great things about it. So I had not had it before. Generations are fantastic. I but I mean to me the gold foil top down. But these two with the gold foil it it's a jack version. Does it elevate the gold foil to a next level? And it makes you appreciate the craft that Bruce was able to put into blending that. Yes. Okay. But if you like flavor, like a wide palette of flavors. I d I didn't think the Rustless fifteen was as wide no as the gold foil. It punches you the fifteen punches you with all that sweet goodness. Yeah which it's phenomenal. Yeah. But to to get like a it's like the difference between hearing one trumpet worse versus an entire brass. You know you just did so many different Flavors you gotta sit there and go, all right, wow. I love that description. I really do. I that's not a description I can pull because I really don't know what that sounds like, you know. Well it's it's but I can envision what where you're going with it. I've been to a 21-gun salute, and having four guns is better than having you know one do it. Yeah, yeah. And I I actually I yeah, I still play taps for military funerals which I've done four this year. So that my son's in boot camp right now. Cheers to Conrad, Fort Bay. Yep. So if you wanted to acquire one of these bottles, would revival be your best bet to go? I think so or I still say looking at estate sales 'cause that's that's that's what we did. and in the completely by accident. I talked about the last podcast there was an auction that I was actually looking for a piano with a player on it. Yeah. And there was this auction. So we went and we looked at it and he had some bourbon barrel furniture and I asked the gentleman's son Who had passed, I'm like, Well I said bourbon barrel furniture and did he have bourbon? And he goes, yeah. He goes and he opens up his cupboard. He's like, Well you can I was like I need to see it. So I came home with two cases of bourbon. But then he goes, and there's two cases of there's cases of sealed stuff down in the basement. So I go down in the basement, there's six of these and six Canadian clubs. And and he wanted some some money for it, so I came home with two. I actually he knew what he had. Yeah. And and I came home with a nineteen seventy-five four fish court. And Steph's actually like the one that said, you know, you're you're gonna take this off. Okay. And it's been it's it's been fantastic. Yeah. I've had other estate auctions where I came on with a nineteen sixty eight old Fitzgerald and a nineteen forty four old crow and that entire box of bottles cost eleven dollars. Wow. I mean it it it You just gotta be there. Right place, right time. Yeah. Relationships. Well in you know in these bottles, he actually asked a lot less. And I'm like, No I I can't do that. I'd feel wrong. Yeah, I can't do that in good faith. Here's what I'll offer you. Yep. And he did. And and he took care of us. I love that. Yeah, that's where Jason got his four fortieth anniversary for Roses, the Jim Rutledge was an estate sale. Yeah. That's that's twice now recently where people have talked about finding them at garage sales or estate sales. Yeah, this is this is great. What a treat, thank you. So the next one we have to say is unnamed. Okay. I can't feel it here or anything. Say a name on this while we're here. Understood. But I can say that it's distilled nineteen seventy seven. Bottled in nineteen eighty two. You're very well too much. It is the mash bill of what is my favorite stuff growing up. So my grandfather was a huge fan. Okay. And He said that so when he was a kid, when he was like four or five years old, his uncle would send him out to the still to bring back a quart every morning that he stayed down in North Carolina with him. his his uncle was also fiddle maker And when he started drinking bourbon, he said this reminded him of that the most. I wanted to do the research, figure out what I can. And I reached out to Wally Dant of Monks Road and Log Still Distillery And I told him the story. He invited us down. He took us on a three-hour tour of his distillery, which is on the original family distillery grounds. He got the original DSP 47 back. And we did a hour long podcast and then we sat around and drank with him for two hours afterwards. Absolute for me wonderful experience. Thank you very much for the You bet. Thank you. Great stickers by the way. Appreciate it. You probably did a lot less talking and that was two hours and more listening. So much before we even did the podcast, I was trying like the the distillate, and then we were thieving barrels in the in the Rick House. We ended up we ended up going to dinner afterwards. And I slept the whole way. I was passed out. I didn't mean a lot of drinking stuff. And then we went to Dark Arts. And it was Macaulay. Yeah. But that was a good day. So This was distilled around when I was born in seventy seven. Spring of seventy seven. Immediately my eyes went big. Like I nosed it, I took one nose and then my whole body just like rebooted. And this is beautiful. Yeah, this is why I fell in love with bourbon. This right here. This is what I grew up with. You know, my grandpa had seven daughters, I was the first grandkid. He was my buddy. It should be a glade plug-in. And a candle. I don't get any certain It doesn't get much better than that. Yeah, it's full. It's like great viscosity. Delicate but yet pungent, right? It's and then the aftertaste that back of the pallate I feel like I want to do the Fred Minnick where he just counts the finish off, you know? It's not very good content, but but the problem is you're just gonna sit here because this just lasts the conversation. That's remarkable. Remarkable whiskey. So when we went and did the podcast with Wally, yeah we he's got Airbnbs on the property. We stayed in his grandfather's house, which used to be thirty-five feet from the Rick House. And this is where Wally would go visit when he was a kid. He said there was always this smell in the basement. And that's what he remembers as when he would go carry his grandparents' house. So his grandfather was the last president of the JW Dant Distillery. when it was located in Gethsemane Okay. Schenley bought it, so it sold the Armand Hammer, Schenley bought it, and then Schenley moved operations in the in the 70s to Louisville. But they brought with it the mash bill. It wasn't until the eighties that they changed. So Heaven Hills, which is the owner of JW Dant brand now. Yes. Because Log Still Distillery has no association with it. Gotcha. But they have an association with Monks Road now, don't they? Yes. Yeah, Monks Road Bourbon is Log Still Distillery is Okay. And and they came out with that. How about National Bourbon Heritage Month bottle which Lolly should be here in a little bit? We're gonna do that with the property in the last year or two. That's what a whiskey should be like. Yeah. Amen. Makes your leg leg a little bit. I am actually gonna save a little bit for my wife to try it. Grab another glass. She needs to try that. Well that's a recent find, which we're pretty happy about that. Absolutely. there's gonna be enough left. Make sure that everybody gets on. He gave us their new cast strength earlier this year. But to the to this day, I think what High West does with their prisoner share, their mid winter nights dram, and how they're curating those is outstanding. I've never met you until now. So they're not there's no sulfur in the transition of moving barrels. So this is gonna be straight prisoner wine. I wanna say it's more of a dry finish than a wet finish. but they accumulate these barrels from their own company after they dump them and they save them for this project. that's got a grape note. Yes. It's like a white grape, it's like a You know when you get the grapes home from the the grocery store and they're still wet, you get the wet grapes out of the bag? Yep, yep. That's that's good. Ever since I had the Barstown prisoner batch one, I have fallen in love with this prisoner finish. And I've had to have everything since. I just feel like it's so much more unique than your Cabernet Savillon. I know I'm saying that wrong. your Zinfandels, your any t other type of wine finish. This this is I like this one as opposed to the rest. wow. So I normally on a wine finish get like a bitter like turnip at the end, mid-pallate or mid-mid-case to the end. You don't get this. It turns like a nice subtle sweetness. It melds with that bourbon primary note. Yeah. And it enhances and amplifies. wow. That's but you're still getting that grapeiness, but not overwhelmingly grape. Right. Okay. I mean Dude even likes this finish and he's not a big Finnish fan. that's nice. How good are those? That's fantastic. High West is doing some remarkable stuff right now. That's great stuff. man. See Fritter pours. And Giggle pours. I need to get a t-shirt. I need a t-shirt. And Cleveland Barrel Hunter has been great. I love the stuff. Everybody who loved this, I'm like, I have to have a bomb. So they didn't end up picking it, but I'm like, I'm taking home. Where are they located? So this is at Old Louis the same building Old Louis wanted. okay. So Oak and age. They're up on a floor. They're on the third or fourth floor. Yeah. Oak I know I okay. I mean Amin showed me their their lot. Yes. So I want you to try this and then I'll tell you about it. It's got a beautiful color. That's like darker than amber. Wow. It looks like you're gonna get a lot of tannin out of nose. And you don't. You don't. It looks like you're gonna get a lot of tan. This this to me, I could not reasonably leave there without having a bottle. So we thieved this just for me. And it says, hand picked by Dan. Love it. So you tell you tell me what proof it is. It's gonna be on a podcast. They can say to their gr their kids or my grandkids and say, Hey, this is why we do this. There's a lot to be said for oral history. Yes. It's not on an app, it's not a it's not exactly there's no So then you're listening to him. Yeah and then did you reach out to him saying, Hey, I I did. What what was the implication for you to start the podcast in the beginning? So dude Poole started our podcast. Dude he started it in two thousand nineteen. And I joined them around the beginning of twenty twenty three. Okay. I moved to Ohio in twenty twenty during COVID from Alabama, where I've Sifton Detlinger if you've had any Detling products, it's an Alabama distillery. They've got some really cool stuff coming out, but there's a lot of other states developing. Did anybody have Kentucky roots? no, dude has Ohio State roots, okay, and Tyler has Michigan roots. I have Michigan roots. Okay. And then Brett has he so Brett went to Moorhead State. Okay. Yeah. Giant great. Yeah, yeah. Just really cool stuff. So I gotta listen to some of yours and watch some of yours. I'm gonna continue to watch yours. We're a little different. We're we're we're very laid back, we joke, a lot of movie references, and then we bring it back around the bourbon. Yeah. And then do you have like a is there like a featured bourbon on each podcast? Yeah, we ha we theme it. We theme it up. Yeah. Okay, gotcha. It'll be like we'll do ninety to hundred proof, hundred hundred and ten proof, hundred and ten, hundred and twenty proof, talk about the different proof point levels. Were you guys at the Burring Festival? K KBF? Yes. I was not. I was not able to. Okay. You think you'll come in the future? Yes. I would love to. The reason I ask you is is is my third year to work. I volunteer. When I volunteer I get a pass for three days so I can drink for free for three days. nice. Plus I get to meet everybody at the Welcome Center and I network. there were sixty-eight different distilleries there this year. Sixty-eight. One of the ones that was not there, horse soldier. And you know the dynamic around horse soldier. Yeah, the horsemen that went into my design on July fourth. Yeah. Yeah. But these were the guys that went in on horseback to Afghanistan after nine eleven. Two story, twelve strong, they made a motion picture out of it. Mm-hmm. Well they're down in Somerset, they were so focused on opening they couldn't they couldn't get you know get to the the festival. So next year they think they're gonna be there. So but it's an incredible event. Well what are they how we got a couple of both Scotty Bourbon boys? Yeah, I I know Jeffrey and I know C T. educated a whole damn family. Well they're they're all there's a maze. Chris Thompson is one of my really good buddies. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah exactly. Yeah Jeff was really bumbled I couldn't go on their bus tour. But I had a I had a some work projects I had to finish up. It's like an Orchata like a Mexican vanilla Yes, light cinnamon to it. I would love to know where in Kentucky these barrels came from.
