Dan And Nick: Good evening. Hi everybody. And we're back. We are part deaux We are doing Bomberger's and Ben Holiday, soft red wheat. So this your first Bomberger's, right? Yeah, I have tried this. This is the 2025 declaration. I did try it actually in Omaha where I Sometimes I end up out there for work and that's where I ended up with that Ben Holiday and they've got a bar in the store. So I did try it maybe last fall and it showed up here because we get late, know, â a year late. So it showed up here what a few weeks ago and probably, you know, it got the rest in the â OHLQ. Yeah. Exactly. So â yeah, I have it, but it's a, it's a fresh bottle. We'll get it cracked open today and then. Yeah, that's the Ben Holiday, the soft red wheat. That's, think they're, yeah, six year. Yeah, excited you to try â it. something very, very different, very unique. but they do stuff out of Missouri. I always get these confused. Missouri, Missouri. Yeah. Missouri, Mississippi. Same thing. Yeah. But yeah, they good stuff. I've picked up, I think they're batching nine now. I haven't seen them out yet. have an eight year as well, but this one is yeah, the soft red wheat. So I'll give that one a try too. And I saw a video on the Ben Holiday and I guess they use the limestone water. Yes. The filler water like a lot of the good distilleries. Yeah. I'm excited to try that. Well, let's start. Yeah. I think we'll start here. We said that Ben Holiday has got a little bit more proof. So we'll warm up with the Bomberger's. Thanks So I got the Shenk's That's what I was just, think you wanted the, one. Yeah. We about it because yeah, what, a few weeks before the, Bomberger's, the Shenk's had it. Right. And you picked it up there. And then the day the Bomberger's came in, had three bottles. Yeah. I, I didn't attend that but I might've had one of our mutual friends that tends to be towards the front of the line. that didn't want anything that day, grab one. So unfortunately, I didn't know that you were the next one up in line, but at least we're here sharing. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. So you get to try it. It's got a great nose on it. does. Almost, Oh, what is that there? that cherry? It almost reminded me when we just had the, that Russell's, that 16 year. I got a lot of that fruit forwardness, that red fruit kind of forward on the nose and it's almost similar to that. All right, cheers. Cheers. So I get going. Yeah, I get the red fruit in the palette. Really. Lasting finish and you get. The rye going back and get that yeah, that ready rye, but it's â pleasant. There is a breadiness there, but there's no bitterness. No, no, and I agree there's. There's that red fruit kind of sweetness on the front end. wasn't picking up on the breadiness. I was trying to figure it out until you said that. don't know, see if I... Yeah, I was struggling to describe it, but it almost is. It's that fruitiness up front. breadiness was what I couldn't figure out. Couldn't figure out kind of that mid palette and then a little bit of that spice on the back end, not â much. Just â but it's nice, sweet, sweet spice. It's like a. â that's pleasant. That's really Yeah, it's not a cinnamon red hot. It's just â a very pleasant, subtle little spice kind of on that back palate. Hmm. And I would not have guessed that this was 108 proof either. I think it drinks under that proof. think it's a little â bit under that. if you told me, I'd guess somewhere a little bit below that. Maybe 100, 101. that 107, 108 range tends to be popular for a reason. So it just seems to find that sweet spot. Just get a hair of corn. Just a hair of... didn't really initially, almost... Ran out a little early, but yeah, there's... Maybe little bit of that corn. Yeah. The red fruit on that front end. Yeah, it really reminded me of that. I'm going to save a little bit of that for Steph. Well, no, just grab a... Grab yourself a little... We'll get you a little sample after. Yeah, keep one with you here. Yeah. Yeah. Especially if you get the... Your Shenk's You know, get it side by side with that. Yeah, come on. But I do find, know, the Shenk's versus declaration then moving up to the PFG. â yeah. There is a... seems to be substantial jump. â I much prefer the declarations over the but the PFG is special. Hey, Shoulder like that. Hi. Okay, what am I trying? leave you a little. What am I trying? This is the Bombergers. Higher proof than I'm usually okay with. What do you think? Are you gonna like it? I think you'll like it. Mm. It's It's a little peppery on the tongue, but it's not burning. You can actually taste something. I don't know what. I never know what I'm tasting, but the smell is a little odd or different. Just It's got a little bit of a corn smell, but it's also got a little bit of a red fruit. Of red fruit. Just the red ones. Just the red ones. Just the red ones. No blackberries. Just the red ones only. What you guys think? You like? Yeah, we it. You're happy. Yeah. Yeah. So what I heard was you got one of the allocated bottles, right? I mean, I'm all secondhand information because then a couple weeks ago, I guess there was three bottles. I â working, know, paying the bills and. But somebody there picked one up for me, so. And then I was â the person in line. You missed out. So he made me feel guilty and I had to bring it to him. Worked out for you anyway. right. Yeah, we'll get to try it. Yeah, that's really good. it is good. Okay, like it. I like it for the complexity. Yeah, â it You know, you hear, front palate, mid palate, back palate. Like, I don't know, this one just tastes good. â Yeah, this one have, it does change a little bit. A little bit sweeter on the front, a little bit peppery almost like you said, kind of on the back. Yeah, because normally I like something a little lower proof or something really smooth. Yeah. But I do like the complexity of this. She would like that Kentucky spirit. did. We'll leave a sample of that one too. Nice. happy with it. Did leave these here for everyone to see? â yeah. Your buttons. â yeah, I did. I noticed that. My mom has been cleaning house lately and so she's sending me every picture â taken of myself that she has collected over the years and my grandma too because my grandma passed away. So we've got my tennis button which I know you can't see but it doesn't matter. It's hilarious. And also have a basketball one. down to Cincinnati soon as well I hear. â Yeah. Yeah. excited that too. because I guess we're going finals weekend. It just kind of worked out like that. So we bought the tickets. But I was kind of, you know, thinking anytime we went during the two weeks would be cool. Cause if we go towards the beginning, then everybody's there. You can go to like practice sessions and all that kind of thing. But yeah, so we got a tennis pin and a basketball pin. And that is just one of maybe 15 to 20 that I received from my mom. So yeah, that's a buddy. I think Buddy Pin, is that what they were called? So you're a Poland girl? No, East Palestine. East Palestine, oh okay. I was gonna say those aren't Poland colors. They're somehow blue bulldogs. I was gonna say, yeah, those aren't Poland colors. You know, proper dog colors. Brown. Yeah, brown. Brown and white. They're Cleveland Browns. I grew up in Canfield, so we don't like Poland, so East Palestine's better. East Palestine's okay, yeah. I agree. You know, it was a great place to grow up when we did grow up there. So I was wearing the tennis pin because I was there when the box came out and I'm like, so we were dating when that picture was taken. that was. So he was wearing a round for a little bit, but so the story is it wasn't it wouldn't stay clasped. wasn't staying clasped. You still get out and hit at all? I mean, I might have played a little bit of tennis back in my day, but did you? You know, everybody just wants to play pickleball now, but I'm like, yeah, I've never played pickleball. All right. We might have to go out and hit a little bit. Okay. I might need some practice. After college, I sort of like. gave it up a bit because I think I had done it so much. You know, when you just do something so much. Yeah. And then you're just done with it. Yeah. I've been there. Yeah. Well, it's probably 15, 20 years for me as well. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Fair. But I feel like I almost need tennis lessons again because I'm so out of it. I got the yips now. Can't serve. Got the yips. I can't. You've heard of like the yips before. â played golf as well and then about the yips on the short putts and so mine is when I'm throwing the ball up to serve I cannot throw the ball properly. You do that on your hand serve. I'm gonna have to go for it. I'm gonna have to. Hey, what's the one of the pros the is it Nick Kyrgos or whatever is that he used to throw that in every to toss one of those in. it's good enough for them. I might as well. Yeah, why not? not? Didn't center do one tournament two ago? I'm not sure, but I mean, they those guys do throw one in every now and again just to be, you know, funny or throw the other person off. So to see where we're topical. didn't talk about work. You know, we tennis. Yeah. So we have tennis, tennis. But yeah. So I gave him the beginning of the week and I get the end of the week. So Bourbon Trail tennis. It out like that. Well, that's way Wimbledon was. Yeah, I didn't know that though. didn't know we were going to go bourbon hunting in London, but we did. We always try to sneak it in somewhere. He did for sure. â worked out really well. It worked out really well. And then you're taking, you're bringing bottles home in your suitcases. I so worried that they were going to break. We're professional â at this â Yeah. â There's an art form to it. So where's your favorite place you've ever traveled? work â just in general? f- I don't know. I'm pretty, I'm pretty boring at heart, to be honest with you. Yeah. I'm easy to please. Favorite place? â I know. I'm a golfer. I've been to Pebble Beach a few times. So obviously I used to, â I used to overnight Monterey a lot and lot of good golf courses there. So I've been to Pebble Beach a few times and that's â one of golf's meccas out I went for the first time in 2019 and then I took my dad for his birthday a few years ago as well. So I'm pretty simple. Give me a good golf course and some good food. I don't need the exotic beaches, but yeah, so it was a lot of fun. Yeah, I like Northern California. I don't like a lot of California, Northern California I like. Yeah. I think that's good. I think that's what we've found more in our traveling. Like in our later years, it's not just about like checking off boxes. Yeah. It's like, go do something that's actually meaningful for you. You don't have to see things that other people are seeing. Yeah. I think we were just looking for like chocolate shops and... Yeah. We went to Spain, we were just looking for chocolate and tapas and that's what we were doing. The longer, you know, you've been in the industry for... two and a half times as I have, the longer period of time that I've done it, that was the way of saying that. the longer I've done it, the more I actually like to be home. â Traveling is great and seeing new places is great. So I'll try to get a few places every now and again, but your comforts of home are nice when you live on the road a lot. I'm still in the line flying You know, Dino Dan, what's he goes on on Saturdays or? Yeah, not every Saturday. So I'm out there grinding four days. So â days. Yeah, know. They still do those. I'm still stuck. Yeah. â I'm stuck. my gosh. Well, yeah. Again, he's too old for that. He's gone on three day trip and then he needs recovery. Three days is for sure. â Yeah. That's the limit. Three days. Yeah, it's So it's tough. It's a tough job. mean, I think I never gave it enough credit. Obviously, I you guys are out there like doing something dangerous and important. But then when I see him actually doing it, it's early mornings, it's late nights, plus the stress of just flying three or four flights a day and making sure everyone's safe. They talk about all that circadian rhythm stuff and then the schedules never seem to work that way. It's a lot of inconsistent sleep. I every window of circadian flow. Yeah, I haven't hit the rhythm part yet. Right, right. I've hit all the windows in different order. Yeah. Well, that's why you can hit the bourbon drops at any time. You know, he's out at 2 a.m. waiting in line and I'm like, I need to sleep. That's true. I had the â insomnia bug last night and so I went and picked myself up ticket this morning. Yeah. Got a little bit more sleep and came back at nine. So yeah. That's the way to do it too. Yeah. At least that's nice. You can pop in and get a little more sleep. Yeah. Yeah. We do that sometimes after taking the kids to school in the morning. Yeah. So I'm gonna wake it up at 530, 545 and then we leave here by 645 to take them to school and come back. I don't think there's ever been a day that I've been up before you. Maybe, maybe a handful of If I had somewhere I had to be in the morning and you didn't, but it's, always up. Can't help it. But you do nap and I, I don't know. Can't really nap. So, nothing like in the back of an airplane. â Yeah. I snow a hot cup of coffee inside of an airplane looking out the window. That's about it. Right. little. back of the plane nap or looking at some snow with some hot coffee. And you can just tell too, as soon as that APU starts kicking on and I'm in the back. Yeah. Enjoying your Starbucks. Well, I was thinking that too. I was, you know, out with the dogs last night and taking them out and it's beautiful, clear night. I'm looking up at the stars and I'm just thinking, â Dan probably just sees this all the time. Like he's seen this a million times. Well, if you're up high enough, if you... You know, occasionally if we're light enough, we get up to 41,000 and it just feels like you're in them. Yeah. Well, that's pretty cool. That's some good, uh, good Northern lights too. Oh yeah. A couple months ago, was leaving Minneapolis and forget where we were going, but, uh, yeah, there was, there's been some good ones. Yeah. This winter. So I haven't, I feel like I'm not really experienced them because the times they say, Oh, you can see them in Ohio. No, we can't. too cloudy. Yeah. It's too cloudy. You gotta get up above the clouds. I know there was a day when a lot of people posted pictures of them, but I think we were away when it it seemed to be the really extreme one. So we missed out on that. But well, I'd rather go to, you know, Iceland or something. Yeah. So what's your favorite place then? What you've ever been? Yeah, I should have thought this through before I asked you that question. Probably some of the most beautiful places, honestly, are probably Norway. Probably just the most beautiful place, most beautiful scenery. Alaska really is too. It's got that same kind of â vibe to it. while I'm always cold, And I like southern places. I feel more drawn to northern places because of their more. I feel like more aesthetically pleasing to me. Makes sense. I don't know if that's my favorite place I've ever been. Spain a couple times. it's you drinking other one. Ben Holiday Out. Is that grape This one's very going to be very... Grape Kool-Aid? If you've never tried it. Very different than anything you've ever tried. It does smell very sugary. So we watched a video about a guy talking about this saying he liked it better than Weller 107. Okay. Oh, that's a high proof. It's a lot almost 123 obviously versus a 107. I wouldn't expect that smell for that proof. No, you won't. Take a closer. Well, it is hot. see. I didn't her. There's a difference on the front and the back. Okay, I was getting ready to take a sip, I got a little whiff of the corn, but. that's nice. It's a sweet. It's like a very confectionary sugar sweet. Yeah. I gave it away a little bit. I shouldn't have â because forgot you didn't try it. But that's basically exactly what I described. It drinks a little bit hot right up front, but then the finish really just is very mellow. Kind of sweetens out. That soft red wheat has a very unique, it does a very unique nose to it. And you're right. It's nice and dark. It noses a lot less than almost 123. Yeah. But that spice right up front. But then it just finishes very, very smooth and sweet. Hmm. that's nice. â Yeah, I don't know if I would. Yes, it's a wheater Right. I don't think you can make a comparison with Antique 107. It's two totally different, totally different profiles. Hmm. I don't I don't think, I could go through the pain of drinking it just to get to that finish. Time enough. It is a little hot up front. It's a little hot up front, but it's a very. that's my problem. lot of don't care about that at all. The finish I've even I've tried, you know, adding a couple of drops of water. â know, when I first got it and I first opened it up, I thought, man, it's really a little bit hot up front. Tried experimenting a couple of drops of water. The couple of drops of water cuts that heat a little bit on the front, but it totally dilutes the finish. And so it's, know, you just if ready, you want something with a little bit of a little bit of bite. Maybe not your first drink of the night, but. You get that spice up front, but that finish is really sweet and you said it. It's a lighter sugar. Mm-hmm. Still get a little bit of grape. Yeah, the nose is an oddly. I never thought of it like Kool-Aid, but yeah, there's almost. The smell and the finish are almost contrasting what you get when you eat for first Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I agree. You brought out the nice ones, huh? Well, yeah, we're running out of glasses. We're on what episode 2 here, Oh, you're going very old. Yep. So. This distilled in 1962, bottled in 1970, old Fitzgerald 100 proof, bottled in Bond. So was made by Pappy. Yeah. With a bonus, you get the cork floating around in that. Yeah, well. There's some floaters. â It's to get around that. Yeah. Yeah. This one is so skinny you couldn't. Yeah. This is Now, Bob likes the six-year-old, the glass Monticello, The Count of Monte Cristo. Well, we're about to get literature. cigars and yeah. Yeah, this one. Good point though. There has to be a time when we pull out the cigars with the bourbon. Well, we briefly, I watched the, which I saw your Nashville I told you I was watching it this morning and we're in Columbiana. You said they were... So over there by where the Pizza Hut is. Okay. Right there, first shop in the corner. So they've, been in the cigar business for a time, but... I have quite a few of those floating around as well. And yeah, that'd be really fun if we could get a little overlapping event and. then you got to find out which ones pair with a pipe pipe tobacco, because that's cooler. If you're smoking out of a pipe, that's cooler, I think than a cigar. It's old school. Well, guess you guys will teach me. We haven't it yet. We got some pipes in an estate sale. â really? Yeah, I don't know where they are. Well, I've smelled them, but... â OK. Just, just... Yeah. So what did you pair with it? What did do? What were you drinking with it? â OK. You were just smoking it. Yeah. Make sure they work. Yeah. That nose. Smells so good. You need to do a very old Fitts candle. You just get a little bit of the initial proof and then it just... Yeah, I'm going to have to come back. Yeah, that's delicious. The mid, like you said, there's a little little proof on the front. got to go back, figure out what's â the middle there. Good one. smooth. Silence and joy. I know. don't want to speak out I'm still just trying to figure it out. Or I describe what I'm figuring out. you're right. There's a little bit of that proof on the front and then it... It's hard to describe. If I could mix caramel... And orange oranges. Yeah. And a little bit of alcohol. I mean, that's like what I. Yeah, I get a lot of the. It's it's thick, it's nice. Yeah, right through the middle, there's a lot of that, that viscosity, that thickness, and it does kind of mellows into a little citrus. Hmm. Start to finish. Beautiful. Oh, yeah. It's hard. Yeah. I still struggle to describe it a little bit, but that's, you know, sometimes you can't describe it, but it's just good. Just good. You can't pick out exactly. Can't describe it in words, but. Yeah. And I do. see your little floater down there. Yeah. cork soldier. I not going to waste one drop of this juice. No. Trying to get that thing out. Yeah. What size is that even? That's a half pint. You gotta manifest like finding a case of that in somebody's basement at some point. Yeah, think I'm doing it wrong. I think I need to be hitting these estate sales. Well, that one's not from an estate sale. That one was from... You got that on an auction, right? I got from Hedonism Wines. you â okay. Okay. This is the one from the estate. Okay. The Monte Cristo. And this one is... So it's distilled the same year, 62, but it was bottled in 68. It's gonna be a sad day when that one's gone. I was say that bottle had a lot of tilt to it. see it's a... I know. Now this one is Bob's favorite. Thanks. this one definitely smells. â the dusty smell. Yeah. And just so sweet. Yeah, almost. â You have way more of the dusty experience than I do, but almost like a perfume, like on the nose. There's... Yeah. So it tastes a little younger, just a hair. a hair. But still it's that nice sweet caramel. Sweet caramel. That's what I, yeah. I've struggled to figure that to put it to words. But yeah, I would agree. Sweet caramel. I think that one has a little more citrus than this does. Yeah, there's a sweetness. â That little tart sweetness almost on there. you get â orange and it doesn't that little tanginess to it. Almost the difference there of... â Mmm. Yeah, that's phenomenal. And I think, you know, I really love the story and I love the character and the history behind the Bourbons. But I almost feel like you have to go back and try the Bourbons as they were to understand where they've come from, how they've evolved. And I know that there's a lot of talk on the entry barrel proof and as we've seen, there are some phenomenal Bourbons that are even at the higher. um, entry barrel proof, you go back and you try these and these are just so nice and docile. So smooth. This was a 62 you said? Yeah, still in 62, bottled in 1970. Pappy retired in 64 and passed away in 65. Yeah, we're definitely in a time where there's a lot of chasing the proof, right? And we're maybe the last three, four five years, seems everything is barrel strength, barrel strength, strength, which there's certain things I like that, yeah, it might be 125, 130, it doesn't drink that way. And you have a have a glass and, you oh yeah, that is 135. But. Like we were talking earlier, maybe on the previous video, you you look at a, a Mikter's 10 right around that 94 or even the wild turkey we tried that's right at that 90. Doesn't have to be always barrel proof to give you that full, a full body. That Jefferson's presidential 16 year or the Woodford reserve double, double oaked. Yeah. You guys really like, I tried, I was at Woodford reserve. I think I had the 2023 was the last time I was at the distillery and I did really like it. And I know I watched your video and I Bob really liked that one as well. Yeah, you guys both really seemed to like that. Yeah. I think that's one of my favorite as far as a drinker. Yeah. And that's the 2025. Yes. Yeah. My parents got me that for my birthday. Yeah. Yeah. It's a gift. It is. But you had to come back to it to realize that you really liked it. So my nephew and I, we opened it that night. â was a little, it was a little strong, ethanol-y, you know, and then, I know, it just being opened up for a couple of months. Yeah. Just turned out to be phenomenal. Well, the only knock really ever on that is the price tag, right? â Is not that it's, it's not good. Right. But 200 bucks. But at the same time, you can find it. Sure. So if you want to spend the money for a good bourbon, I mean, that's it. That's a great. Yeah. Nobody's ever said it's not good. They just gripe about the price. Right. So it's all but it's the same thing. Right. what's the point of having a 70 dollar bottle that you can never find? Sure. Yeah. know, with the mickters. â Again, not to keep coming back to that, nobody ever likes their price tags, but nobody ever says that it's not good. So no, that was excellent. Yeah. All right. So we're going to finish up. poor. OK, guess if we have to, gosh, big are out tonight. You want some fresh ones for that? Yeah, let's. Well, I don't normally get somebody that also works in aluminum tubing. True. Well, that's what I say. Yeah. We all use the same line. When I don't want to talk about what I do, I'm in the aluminum tubing business. not a lie. you're saying the same memes. I far predate memes. Yeah, you make own. Cheers. Thanks for coming. Yes. Thank you for having me. Yeah. Enjoyed it. maybe next time we'll... I feel bad. I'm standing in Bob's place. So we'll have Bob over next time. So Bob had to... His had to go do something. So we had to get Lily to orchestra and practice and he wasn't going be here tonight. But we're drinking. This is for Bob. Thank you, Bob. Hopefully we'll together on the next one. That's right. â Cheers. Mmm, that good? Yeah, that good stuff, yeah. can smell it. I this is my favorite. I've it multiple times. â Well, did pull the 15, right? Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So what is about this one is it's got the bite, but it's like the best bite. It's like a delicious bite. Yeah. And then it just continues. And it's that nice, â rounded sweetness. not â too tart. â to light, it's just really nice, deep. Yeah, I'd have to agree. That one is definitely, it gives you the complexity, but it's still smooth. Yeah, it's great. Yeah, it's very long finish. And you get some of the same notes this. I didn't want to say it, but you do. Yeah, there's â there's like an orange zest to it that matches this. â so can see where maybe the zest is the best word, right? Because you say orange and â you you know, but yeah, think they're making old fashioned. You a little bit of that orange twist, right? A little bit of that orange zest, a little bit of the oils. So what's interesting, we're so snobby. What's interesting is, is Pappy himself, when he drank the Weller 12 or the old Fitzgerald, he actually did it with a lemon peel. He rim the glass and do a little lemon squeeze and that's how he drank his bourbon. So I think. That's where that was the taste they were going for. What we doing? We joke. we're trying to figure it all out and we're enjoying it. But there's a level of just, it's good. Right? You don't have to dissect every, â everybody has to dissect every single element of it. And even to your point of, know, what is it? â I think Elmer T. Lee was the one that, you know, people go crazy trying to find these Elmer T.
